  • i have a carbon copy of the ''local people speak out Stop max's hippy music festival no 150,000 hippies here'' sign

  • hey! this isn't my usual pablum^^

  • Timeless

  • This song defined my youth. The Hippy movement was first and foremost a peace movement. Joni Mitchell has chronicled my generation with truth and generosity.

  • My high school English teacher used to make us "study" Joni Mitchell but I didn't realize the depth of this song. We were given light, air, the earth and all of its plants and animals but the season of our discontent was that we realized we had no shirt, no shoes, no house, no bank account, no king.... Our diets now are hardly recognizable as food they are so full of additives, preservatives and artificials. Our water is full of contaminants. We need to get back to the garden, each 1 of us.

  • I am 17 years of age and I simply believe I was born in the wrong era. Music from this era was so meaningful and soulful. This is my most favorite song on earth! I hope they have another Woodstock! It would be amazing. ~ <3&Peace

  • @Kalah1313 Today, unlike in the sixties and seventies, kids in their pre-teens and up make up a huge chunk of the music buying market. Everything that is sold now is dumbed down to the lowest common denominator. If ten year olds had better taste in music things might be different. Besides, I don't think America these days wants to hear "left wing radical hippie marxist..".well, you know!

  • @Kalah1313 Kalah, check out Joanna Newsom. If you go to the Austin City Limits website and search there is a recent set. Very good and reminds me of Joni Mitchell, especially the beauty of her voice

  • And to think Simon Cowell and the other philistines who mind the gates these days would throw her out of the audition before she'd performed a single note... would she have got any sort of break at any other time than the late sixties?

  • She is luminous in this video.

  • This song is so transporting,;a work by a great musician and poet.

  • Many creative people have demons they need to deal with, so what. Joni's music implies to me she was, at her bottom line, a good and gentle soul. Her music was incredibly good and infuenced so many others. I would agree that someone attacking her personally most likely has some interesting psychological reasons for doing so. What an incredibly great song.

  • Hauntingly Beautiful.

  • she had no time for a husband or kids...they would have just weighed her down

it was said..."that the person who travels the lightest, travels the farthest"...

that philosophy served selfish joni well...

but who wants to wake up pushing 70 with no real family...sorry but those pals and the pets dont compare to a loving spouse and children you nurtured and raised properly...

joni re-united with her long lost daughter who she gave up for adoption as a baby...

    but...they are estranged again.

  • @ChiroQuacker she got into a fistfight with the dear one and the cops had to be called

  • They called her phoney Joni for a while cause she didnt go to Woodstock....I think she could have had the greatest time imaginable ..she was a superb soul ...she had a fuckstick for a boy friend at the time ,and he went, so thats why she didnt. Too bad she didnt hook up with Neil Y. instead ..but such is life..thanks for being anywhere Joni... I love ya

  • @The123ewq456 Joni didn’t go to Woodstock because she was already booked on the Dick Cavett show. CS&N told her all about the concert when they returned and she turned their stories into this great song…

  • We are stardust, we are golden

    and we got to REALIZE

    THIS IS the Garden

  • Comment removed

  • We are Stardust. It's not loopy drugged up hippie talk about unicorns farting rainbows - it's a scientific fact. We are billion year-old carbon.

  • The only way 'back to the garden' is through Yeshua Ha Meshiach aka Jesus The Christ!

  • @adysaxman77 You are correct! Baruch HaShem!!!

  • @ppbird0 Shalom & Baruch Ha Shem Adonai!

  • @adysaxman77 oh for gods sake just fuck off with preaching this religious shit

  • Comment removed

  • @adysaxman77

stalking me now are you lol i noticed you blocked me you pitiful little worm, what does that say about you and the kind of person you really are

i was going to poke fun at you but one look at your profile tells me you've clearly got some kind of deluded mental illness so think i'll just rise above it and turn the other cheek or something as your holy father or whoever would advise

  • @robsayers2000 Robby, I blocked you because of your foul comments, nothing more, nothing less. It's actually you who's stalking myself, if you go to all the trouble (after I have indeed blocked you) of looking at my channel, and then commenting to myself using another channel. This shows the type of vindictive character that you really have yourself. I'll be praying for you, that you, yourself, also can be deluded and mental for The Son of God too! Blessings and love in Messiah Robby

  • Pretty hypocritical for a so-called follower of Jesus taking pleasure in anothers damnation. Biblically a SIN. Stupid redneck fuckstick. READ your fucking Bible of its the damn law.

  • @simonparnell1 Simon you're a beautiful person on the inside really aren't you? All the hatred in your words, I let them fall to the ground (where they belong) and return blessings to you, in the Mighty Name of Yeshua The Messiah!

  • Joni Mitchell is the best! Check Lindsey Smith of The Regulars Band doing a cover of River. It's really nice :)

  • This is Joni's alone.... it is made for her voice... no one can sing this song and have it give the same feeling.... absolutely beautiful....

  • Artist

  • love the lyrics

  • That was amazing......my hairs are standing on end.....Joni your are a poet extrordinaire!

  • Wow, I'm moist after this one... very soulful... beautiful!

  • THIS IS THE BIG SUR FESTIVAL NOT WOODSTOCK!

  • @randall642 lol the song is called woodstock

  • @randall642 The name of the song is Woodstock, DUMBASS!

  • Comment removed

  • @randall642 this song is ABOUT Woodstock! She wasn't able to go to it but heard it was awesome so made this awesome song!

  • @randall642: The all-caps text gave it away before I confirmed it by reading your post: You are a dumbass.

  • perfection, absolute. And, something like a Picasso that can never be replicated in any way. There will never be another original like Joni, and back then at that.

  • I can see I am in the extreme minority here. In general I love Joni's work and love the lyrics and meaning of this song but I find this painful to listen to as the melody, range and notes she chooses seem disjointed and random.

  • @SaraTGinMD - you definitely are not "there," but that's okay. We don't expect you to be.

  • for the longest time i thought this was a csny original. i imagine if heard the mitchell version first, i'd hate their version. it seems like a pop rock feel good destruction of her haunting performance here. this is great.

  • She has the voice of an angel and the cheekbones of a goddess.

  • Absolutely beautiful! It just sounds so pure..

  • I usually can come up with something to say in the comments section. This time all I can come up with is... wow!

  • Happy Birthday!

  • 11/7/11 HAPPY 68th BIRTHDAY JONI.. PEACE

  • Amazing lyrics, voice, and time in history. We will never see talent and insight like this again, ever. Sad.

  • My Generation :)

  • Zeppelins' reference to Joni makes sense. The individualism that Joni exhibited in her music/poetry was still timed to a generation that loved her kind of talent. Today, Joni would be told by Simon,"do you realize you are in a singing contest?". Not long ago the music industry recognized and embraced unique and awesome talent and promoted it because of its inspiration. Great music was prolific. Nevertheless, great music exists still- we just have to dig harder

  • @THEJET52 possibly one of the best comment iv seen on youtube. i dont often post comments or reply to comments, but ur spot on

  • @THEJET52 I'm not too sure Simon would dare make that comment with Joni ! LOL But The music industry also embraced a few other people that I KNOW Simon would have . Janis Joplin comes to mind . I myself can't stand her voice . It is Horrible -Yet I respect what she did and How she sang from the heart . Another is Springsteen Great songwriter mediocre at best voice . Yet he seems to be the industries darling ...

  • @kbdevo1962 mediocre voice is just a matter of opinion , i personally think the boss has one the best male voices the industry has ever seen

  • @biggpiston Well that is your prerogative : ) If I must pick a list of favs I would choose Seal , Mark Hollis from Talk Talk,Mark Farner from Grand Funk Railroad, Richard Ashcroft from The Verve and his solo efforts ,Elton John,John Denver ,etc etc, Not in any particular order ,The Boss is a very good songwriter, But I prefer the covers of his work . Such as "Spirits In The Night" By Manfred Mann .

  • @kbdevo1962 for me the boss, neil young, leonard cohen and long john baldry are pretty much my fav male voices, females would be gracie slick, patti smith and as bad as this sound kd lang has amazing bluesy voice

  • @biggpiston I have a TON favorite female vocalists . No particular order - Ali Rogers from Puracane - Toni Halliday from Curve . Billy Holliday Jazz singer - Kristy Thirsk from Rose Chronicles , Lou Rhodes from Lamb ...And a whole bunch I am forgetting at the moment : ) It's hard for me to pick my top favorite because they all sound so good . I guess Toni Halliday for her ability to sing so ether-realistically and Kristy Thirsk for her awesome vocal control .

  • @THEJET52 - hilarious on what Simon would say! How true.

  • @THEJET52 Thats the truth. And great sense of truth humour, but, if you heard Drew Ryniewicz doing Billie Jean (whom Simon thinks is great) you might amend that statement a bit.

  • @THEJET52

I don't think it could be said much better. Kudos.

  • OMG!

  • what a voice!

  • By order of the adept (aikijb)

    Dear Joni,

    Our hour is mounting.

    Hugs to you and

    kisses

    among yourselves & cheers!

  • where was this gig?

  • @SanaOvaisKhan it was filmed for the BBC, so i'm assuming London :)

  • JUST WOW!

  • "i dreamed that i saw the bombers, riding shot gun in the sky." man do i love that line.

  • @cole12890 That was when the military helicopters came in. They could have dropped a bomb, but instead they brought doctors.

  • @sumflow i didnt know that. i figured it ment that everything was chaotic and then all of a sudden it was peaceful.

  • I feel stoned.

  • It's probably the bet piano she ever played, I love the way she's reluctant to stop and adds an extra coda.

  • I swear...this song just gets better and better every time I listen to it. Joni's vocals are incredible!

  • Genius.

  • Anyone ever watch Six Feet Under? This song is featured in the series, in an amazing scene!

  • @Wendyhasachannel jeah. do you share my opinion ? I guess Mitchell and the six feet under mom have substantial similarity in the way they look, don't they ?

  • @Wendyhasachannel I rewatched the entire 6FU series not long ago and the choice of this song, performed by Joni, from that specific scene was pure genius. The morning after the celebration, sun coming up over the canyon, perfect piece of art reflecting a time and mood long since gone. An ethereal beauty. Sigh. Thanks for knowing this. The scene haunts me daily.

  • @oneusualsuspect I discovered Six Feet Under the summer of 2006 I think, I netflixed the whole series and watched it all within a summer. Shortly after I bought the series pack. It's more than just a show, Alan Ball got it right with this one. Ruth always was a touching character, and nothing was more heart breaking than to see her loneliness in the scene mentioned. Also bought me to this song, and I became a fan of Joni ever since. Nice to see fellow fan. :)

  • Start with the first and work your way along. Progress with her. They are all great...especially from this period.

  • im new to this artist what is a good album to get to get me "started" i guess

  • @1phreshprince1

I started with court and spark....that got me hooked ;-)

  • Una de las voces mas dulces en la historia del rock...one of the sweetest voices in rock history.

  • @komaxlaredo Actually Folk, not really Rock.

    Either way its beautiful.

  • tweiss1234 You are getting about half of this I think ... if you understood the devils bargain you'd be less science and more soul free I think... just a thought...I was not at woodstock but I was alive at the time. A time of possibilities ... a time when just maybe the bombers might just have morphed into butterflies.. but we are caught in the devils bargain and the bombers are still stealthily here...

  • @leigh3006 I agree, good point. I was blown away by Joni stating the fact that our bodies are physically made up of stardust (literally) - matter from exploding stars - that is the scientific truth. Thinking of life in that way I think makes nationalism, racism, sexism, homophobia, and all the other ills that plague society seem insignificant in retrospect. But, yes, even that is insignificant relative to how we treat one another. Just a different perpsecitve on things.

  • She may have written this out of guilt because she felt like a sell out . Hmm .

  • Canadian... :)

  • was there an instrument this woman didnt know?

  • So beautiful. <3

  • did she ever lip sync? lyrics/composer/musician/voice: we are lucky to have witnessed this genius. we came upon THIS child of god.

  • @adamscott179 EXACTLY!!!!!!!!! im might've been born too late for woodstock.. but she makes me feel like i didnt through this..

  • timeless

  • Ms. Mitchell's lasting contribution to music is never more strongly evident than in this song. So beautiful, haunting and uplifting.

  • WAR OR PEACE YOU CHOOSE

IF YOU CHOOSE PEACE THEN STOP PAYING TAXES, VOTING , PRAYING

IF YOU ARE FOR WAR WELL CARRY ON PAYING YOUR TAXES,VOTING AND PRAYING TO YOUR GOD TO BRING YOU PEACE.

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD WAKEUP.

  • she is so, so cute. somebody should give this girl a record deal.

  • Just discovered her from a "Six feet under" episode. I'm speechless with such grace :o

  • Joni saved the pole dancing for the bars she hit when she was rangy and restless. Nothig wrong. Just saying get back. Lose your hang ups man !

  • Stunning

  • so aktuell, ich schaudere

  • this live version just blew my mind and put me in another dimension, a dimension much more evolved than the one i consciously perceive

  • time to roll one i think ....:)

  • @crazyfox564 - lol

  • "Going camp out on the land and get my soul free" Amen. Get your souls free brothers and sisters.

  • Name one current popular artist, male or female, who could compose and perform something of this beauty, depth, intricacy and meaning. Sorry Lady Gaga or Pink, not even you, not in the same planetary system ;>

  • @ebquinn I don't think there is anyone. I think Shawn Colvin gets close.

  • @grafenwohr73 Shawn Colvin is very good, yeah. If anyone gets close it's her

  • I was about 20 years old when I first saw Joni perform at the Fillmore East. I was moved by her then and still moved by her now. I remember having to look up the meaning of words and places she used in her lyrics. Where is the Bay of Fundy anyway, is it anywhere near Newark Bay? :>)

  • @Oprahd The Bay of Fundy is in Canada between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick - a little north of Maine.

  • Tears. The embodiment of Hope and Streams of Beauty.

  • The intricate shades and tones in this composition are what is fantastic.

  • Thank you Joni, for being such a constant inspiration throughout my life. There are profound truths in your lyrics

  • Best line is

And I dreamed I saw the bomber jet planes

    Riding shotgun in the sky,

And they were turning into butterflies

    Above our nation.

    Genius.

  • What a soothing music. It's best not to actually listen and watch the clip, but to to do something, while listening to this, it could be a wonderful calming background music

  • Once you hear this, how can you possibly not understand where we were then?? I can still picture planes turning into butterflies. I wish I could have a great big party with all the folks that remember this the first time around. Maybe we could ask our kids or our grandkids to drive us there. I'm kinda tired of mud, but I still want the music to be turned up louder and louder!!

  • It doesn't hurt Joni's music one bit that she was GORGEOUS...as is her music.

  • sounds like an angel

  • 3 DAYS of PEACE & MUSIC! Happy 42nd Birthday....

  • Happy FortyTwo. Coming around again and again . . .

  • I'm crying for the old ways

  • बहुत अच्छा !

  • her voice touched me from the first song i ever heard. so beautiful

  • ♫♪ Լღvє ♫ ♪♪

  • ughh. so you play the fuckin street corner and don't put your hat in front of you upside down to catch some change? just drop it man. money makes the world go round. deal with it or fuckin burn down the treasury

  • @DeweyDuck420 you're comparing catching change to signing with a major record label and letting your music be affected. the deciding factor in whether an artist has sold out or not is if their music is affected, basically, if they give up final creative control over their sound. which obviously, i do not, when i sign 5 hours straight and make maybe 6 bucks. money does not make the world go round. money is just a big fucking lie, things should be i grow you grow we both give.

  • 2 people are not going back to the garden :(

  • Billion year old carbon, baby! Love this original!

  • One of the great lines that I never hear commented on: "We are stardust.

Billion year old carbon" has got to be the most scientifically literate line I've ever heard from a musician - not to mention mind-blowingly profound, and the literal truth. In my top 10 songs of all time. Best female song writer ever. Love you Joni!

  • @tweiss1234 couldn't have said it better myself. wish i could vote up more than once

  • @tweiss1234 to true my friend.best line of the song.if only people realised, this world could be a much better place.

  • @stevevegetable - absolutely - I wish everyone would listen to this song and understand its message - the world would definitely be a better place

  • @tweiss1234 Let me correct you on one thing: Best song writer ever. < - erased the female :D

  • @PickaxePig - Thank you - I stand corrected! Yeah, nobody will ever touch Joni.

  • @tweiss1234 :D

  • NO CUSSIN ON THE JONI CHANNEL....STOP IT

  • @sheilaboy44 In my time I have come to distrust people who don't curse. Somethin' wrong with 'em.

  • @y0nd3r WHEN U HAVE A BRAIN THERES BETTER WAYS TO EXPRESS YOURSELF BETTER THAN BEING VULGAR...THATS WHY RAP IS NOT MUSIC!!!!

  • @sheilaboy44 Ha! Another person trying to 'be the one' who defines what 'vulgar' is. Kinda like the ex-pres bushy...the decider. Are you a republican by any chance? I do notice you crassly scream at others in all caps. Toodles, sweetie, have a GREAT DAY.

  • @y0nd3r WHO SAID I WAS SCREAMING??? I ALWAYS WRITE IN CAPS...NO I HATE REPUBLICANS...NOT THAT DEMS ARE ANY BETTER. WE LIVE IN A VULGAR SOCIETY..LOOK AROUND YOU. I DONT LIVE IN A GLASS BUBBLE PRETENDING I DONT SEE THE DECAY.

  • Comment removed

  • @y0nd3r I have no idea what your point is???? U seem to want to have your own cake and eat it too. U come to this channel with Joni well knowing what her music is all about and bash people over the head for believing in her. I appreciate what she stands for as well as the music of the 60's. Unlike todays garbage it has left a signifucant mark...

  • @sheilaboy44 I can agree with the last part of your statement, although Joni is but one of many beautiful artists. The first part is unsupported and nonsensical. I merely responded to your comment above commanding everyone to stop cursing like you were everyones mama. STFU and enjoy the show. Thank you for not screaming.

  • @sheilaboy44 I came to Jonis channel just to escape the bs and fights everywhere else. Shes a great reminder of the stuff that at end of the day matter most, love, peace, creativity and your soul.

  • @sheilaboy44 Hey there....I've done a version of this song - I'd love to know your thoughts! check it out when you have a sec x

  • in retrospect my comment should have been directed at mrmikesim not the other guy so m a big sorry to him ;)

  • was not my purpose to get back to the garden their tiger was a simple go fuck yourself to someone who in my opinion was trying to slander or diminish a great artist

  • @kanadadan . . . sort of defeats the purpose about GETTING BACK TO THE GARDEN when you start hurling expletives around, eh? All the best to you.

  • Comment removed

  • who needs drugs having this kind of music

  • I love Joni Mitchell's voice better, but I think I might like the CSNY version a little better.

  • James Taylor's version that he did live on Howard Stern was amazing as well. Always brings the tears to my eyes.

  • ....keep waiting for her to say.........."Thats why they call me.....Bad Company"

  • Joni's great in her genre (wonderfull voice and great lyrics), but i prefer the Croby, Stills, Nash and Young version tho.

  • "Billion year-old carbon". I love that line.

  • She is also the writer of this song. She has written most of her hits and album cuts. Beautiful inside and out, a real pioneer for women in rock who doesn't get the acclaim she should.

    She's brilliant.

  • Why is my face wet after listening and watching this, time after time?

  • I love you Mike

  • OMG!!!ive never heard her version.such an amazing voice.beautiful

  • i'm a voice teacher - but joni taught me a lot about how to sing......... I still try to sing like her
