@desoclair It has to be the paper the special Amaretti biscuits are wrapped in. It's the only paper which burns this way that I know of. Cheers, Lesley
Sorry for the late reply I've been away from YouTube for a while. It doesn't work with any paper it has to have the right strength and lightness for it to stay together and float up like that. Cheers, Lesley
We had been doing this every New Year for maybe 5 years (my sister told me how), but this year, none of the papers flew. Still 'tissue' paper but has quality changed??
Cool, I love hearing that other people do this. Nigella mentionned it on one of her Christmas cooking programs too. We haven't done ours yet so I'll have to let you know if they don't fly and we can complain LOL. Happy New Year. Cheers, Lesley
Well done for getting your rockets to reach the ceiling. Mine only went up about 2 feet. Very disappointing!!
By the way, it's not dangerous at all. There's only one tiny flame and every person in the room is watching it. You would have to be doused in petrol to be in any form of peril!
We don't worry about it being dangerous but in these days of health and safety you pretty much feel you have to state the obvious or half the comments will be about what could go wrong! We couldn't get the counting right but yes at least our sail up to the ceiling. Cheers, Lesley
LOL we didn't get the counting right did we! You can buy them online but they're expensive but many of our big supermarkets do them. We often get ours in Sainsbury's around Christmas time, I've seen them in TKMaxx too! Best to buy a pack that have a window so you can see if they have the paper wrappers or not. Cheers, Lesley
They're not so difficult to get in this country though not all Amaretti have the paper wrappers, some are in plastic. But it's a lot of fun if you find them and the biscuits taste great too. Cheers, Lesley
It was passed on to us via my husband's family. They were taught how to do it at an Italian restaurant in London, where it was done for the amusement of the children. I think low ceilings would end up with a black smutty mark yikes! Cheers, Lesley
Sorry Christopher my hubby says we can't, two are enough. But having fun with food is something you can enjoy with your family and friends. Cheers, Lesley
lol!!! hee hee! yoo iz teachin yur kids to be arsonists i luvs yoo. i like dem bicuits they iz yummy i will try burnin the wrappers next time i haz dem.
The magic of fire! Hopefully we're indulging them enough that they won't long to set fire to other things. A little of what you fancy does you good. You have great taste mushy peas and Amaretti (not together - ugh). Cheers, Lesley
This trick came from my husband's family and they were taught to do it at an Italian restaurant a long time ago. It's a lot of fun but always makes you wonder if it will work or not each time - sometimes they unroll and just burn away. Cheers, Lesley
Hey thanks for commenting Alex it's amazing that so far it's only 3 British people who know this trick. As for the house we haven't decorated that room yet so it's down to the previous owner! Cheers, Lesley
Karla you're right, I hadn't put it into words but they are beautiful. It's really magical after a romantic meal to light the wrappers in the darkness and watch them float up.....ah happy days and nights ;-) Cheers, Lesley
Just went over and checked out your page. Hoorah, there is someone else who knows about this fun trick. It's maybe an Italian/UK trick. Maybe us Brits will try burning anything and discovered the perfect thing with the Amaretti wrappers. Cheers, Lesley
Oh it's right up your street Dave isn't it! So far I haven't found anyone who has seen it done before though it's been passed to me for nearly 10 years and has been in my husband's family repertoire for a long time before that. Cheers, Lesley
Wow, this was really quite something. Thanks for telling me about it Lesley. I actually wasn't expecting the paper to take off like that. Those wrappers certainly have undergone some sort of special process I'd guess. I was marveling at the controlled even burn even before the launch. And nope I've never seen anything remotely similiar. Now I'm going to be eyeing every wrapper I see thinking whether it'll do the same thing, but of course that would be a very rare wrapper which would do that.
They are are thin unwaxed paper but stiff enough to stand as a tube. The scientist in me loves this as you wonder if the tube is right to give enough heat lift at the moment the paper has burned down enough to be light. Sometimes the tube unrolls at the last minute and they don't fly. Glad you liked it. Still haven't found anyone who has seen it done before. Cheers, Lesley
Oh how cute you celebrated 777 at home! You have such a cute family. How are you doing that with the candle thing??? What is it you are burning? that's so cool! Love you guys!!!
It's the wrappers to the Amaretti biscuits. You roll them into a cylinder and light the top edge. As the paper burns away it all gets lighter so eventually the heat is enough to make it take off. So far no one has seen it done before. I want to spread it round the planet (without burning down people's houses I hope). Knew you'd like this. Cheers, Lesley
Ok, how much fun is that. I want to know how on earth did you get to know this happened when you burned the packages Lesely? ::grins:: Someone would have had to be playing with fire. ::giggles:: Anyhow, your family is beautiful and it looks like you give your children the freedom to play and express themselves as they should. I wish more families were like yours. What a lovely time and a wonderful Video! His autumnrain, becca @-->------
It was a trick my husband's family learned a long time ago at an Italian restaurant where they lived in London. Family fun has to be passed on within the family and shared with friends so they in turn can share it. Something special about these paper wrappers that makes it work. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers, Lesley
Wow there are two Tubies in Ipswich! KurtGnu is in Colchester...gee we had the makings of a 7.7.7! Thanks for the visit and the compliment. I'm waiting for someone to say they've seen it done before but so far no-one has! See you around in Tubeland, or maybe the Cornhill. Cheers, Lesley
I have NEVER seen this before, WOW! My jaw literally dropped open at the first round. Then I was leaned in towards my monitor, grinning ear to ear for the 2nd and 3rd.
Oh now I've come over all silly and teary eyed, a comment from you on my video, sniff. I put it up because it was our way of celebrating 777 and I think it's an unusual thing. But I'm amazed that so far no one has seen it before. Wanted to swap out the audio but YT wouldn't let me so we have demented countdowns! Cheers, Lesley (giggling now)
Aw Lisa, sorry I can't send you any we ate the lot and launched all the wrappers. I would have shared them if I'd known. It was good this time, sometimes if you don't make the tube of paper right they kind of unroll as they burn and then it's just a little fire on a plate! Cheers, Lesley
no lie, after the first 'rocket' went up, a moth flew straight at my head and i about jumped out of my skin, i was that engrossed, i thought i was watching it in 3D.
That's so funny, was it drawn to the flame or was it just a random event I wonder? I haven't tried Brad Thunder's 3D effects I don't know if I have them. It's hard enough just figuring out what I have with this MacBook. I intended to put a music track on but that feature wasn't available when I uploaded it to the Tube. Cheers, Lesley
That's a cool trick! I've never seen that before! I will try that! Though, I'm always unsupervised, I will try not to burn the place down! I love the delayed endings.. "twoooo, ooonnnnnnnnnne,... BLAST OFF" LMFAO! 5*'s!
Yes the countdown was very eratic, Max was doing well counting down he's six, Hannah kept counting back up she's only three and a half. You always have something to light them with close to hand. You do have to get these real Italian Amaretti wrapped in this paper for it to work. Have fun! Cheers, Lesley
It's one of those Darling family traditions, I learnt from my husband on honeymoon. It is a lot of fun so I thought I'd share it with everyone. Cheers, Lesley
Thanks for sharing this family gathering. Quite a nice effect with the wrappers. I'm not going to show this to my sons (8 and 9), that would be dangerous!
It's definately something for the grown ups to do and the kids to watch. Ours are at the age where they wouldn't have a go themselves and can't reach any matches if they felt the urge. Cheers, Lesley
Now that surprises me! We had our honeymoon in Venice, not sure if that's where we learnt to do it. There's always an anxious moment when you wonder if it is the right sort of paper or if you're going to burn the place down. Thanks for the compliment I'll pass it on. Cheers, Lesley
Well sometimes you just have to go ahead and have some fun don't you? It is one of those things the kids always enjoy and so do I to be perfectly honest. Cheers, Lesley
cool!!! but ... can't help thinking that when those kids reach the age of about 11/12ish, you might just regret having taught them that. :0)
