Tried both and they don't have anything like that effect - it must be a specific type of blur filter like gaussian blur but haven't been able to work it out.

The eye get used to see the picture in one way. If you mirror you can detect faults easier. thats why.

Wow, that was really nice! You have an interesting workflow, too. Kinda looks like you laid down flat colors, blurred them, then reduced the opacity and just had a bunch of layer over top of one another, right?

Well however you did it, it turned out great. Very realistic and soft, the only thing I'm not too fond of is the color of the vine things on her shoulder, they seem a bit over-saturated, but that's just a personal preference.
