This was the only game I could consistently win. (Yes, it had an ending!) The key was basically just firing all the weapons all the time, and being on the far edge of the screen in certain places.
this game was nerve wrecking. i was king of the neighborhood, downtown et al.the average top score was about 120,000 if rarely seen. i would come in the stores and 3x the score. my top score was over 500,000. back in the early 80's this was the only game i was good at.
Very rarely I used Energy in this game. In the Rainbow Zone, all you had to do is to just stay in one place in the middle, and just keep firing until you were out.
The "Stick Zone" was a Pure Bitch for me especially when you had the object firing at you going up and down whereas you had to stay in the Black area. UNFAIR!
The "Stripe Zone" was a feast for me! The only thing I worried about was the Monster extending His Arms at both levels. Other than that, I cleaned up!
I was OBSESSED with this game after I discovered it in a Florida arcade when I was 11 or 12 years old back in the early 80s. I was fascinated with the music, and I loved to bump the ships after entering the energy area. To this day, I still think the energy music combined with the sound of bumping those ships is so cool!
I was also obsessed with this game. I first played it at a grocery store, but the volume was turned down. When I seen this at a tavern up north from me. I liked the speach, sound effects, and the music.
Once upon a time, I Mastered this game, and to the tune of 570,000 Points, at the time, must have been definately A Record. I have yet to see anyone come close to my 570,000 Score on this game. This game was awesome!
Vanguard was one of my all-time favorite arcade games growing up. As simple as it looks today, it was one of the hardest freaking games ever back in the early 80s. Nice to see that at least one is still running!

Everytime I see this game, an old 80's psa comes to mind. Not sure if it was about smoking, alcohol, or the illegal stuff.

I know what you mean. I also collect old arcade PCB's, but in the last years, my passion somehow faded for them.

It shows that the MAME sound emulation is FAR from perfect.
porcorosso81 2 years ago
At 1st the MAME sound was completely wrong. But now everything is correct except for the shot sounds.

Umm..no.
- The shoot sounds are not correct
- The explosions lack the PUNCH, which can be heard very clearly here
- No emulation of the synthetic voice chip
Again: the MAME sound emulation is FAR from perfect.

It wasn't hard. The game is very predictable, very easy to memorize. Scramble or Stargate were much harder.
