I think too many critics focused on the sex scene for a start. Itbecame infamous for one scene. Secondly I think many people thought A that Carax was pushing Pierre as a 'hero' of some sort, it is common for critics to assume that the director admires or a agrees with the central character's behaviour arc... but of course this need not be the case. Finally I think the not so faint whiff of incest is difficult for many...
