spreads are made by the bookmakers to compensate for other teams being better than others. for example, the odds makers believe that indy is better than jacksonville and indy is at home. so, if you want to be the other team, you get 7 points to start the game with because jacksonville is +7. So if the final score is indy 10 jax 7, you win the bet, even though jax lost. hope that clears it up.
