They do in the UK, but guess what? THEY'RE WRONG! They are SIDE rods and you can even see on locomotive website what the different parts of a locomotive are called

if you google search coupling rods, you will find that siderods and coupling rods are bassically the same thing.

Engines with exterior pistons, have coupling rods, engines with interior pistons (such a thomas) has siderods
