  • Thrundrabird!!!!!!

  • Your english is fine, actually spoken better than in most places in the USA...

I'm am a Linux Mint user, myself. good video.

  • Very good !

    The future is open !

  • What a bunch of sexy bastards.

  • I used Fedora C4,5,6,7, Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon, Ubuntu Hardy Heron. Now the latest release Ubuntu Intredpid is my next to install

  • I love it! The quirkiness makes it fun and interesting. The accents were fun to listen to. And all these people are doing a great favor for the world. That public official will be famous, as he is saving the taxpayers a lot of their hard-earned money. I wish China had even just one of this kind of official. 5*!

  • After two years of linux implmentation, ELCOT has proved to the world that a large enterprise can indeed run with 100% linux, be it in desktop, servers, state wide area network or even mainframe server powered data centre. Now ELCOT has started loading Ubuntu linux as second operating system. Ubuntu is an outstanding OS. ELCOT also has opened 30 training centres powered by 1200 linux (Suse & Ubuntu) laptops. Target: training 20000 Government officials in 2008-09.

  • A very strong and bold decision to stop using windows and find a better alternative. Kudos to out of the box thinking.

  • We find Windows a strange operating system. After using linux for two years, Ms-windows appears to be a kid stuff. It is an annoying OS (everyone will get this feeling after using linux OS for a few months)

  • the narrator has an annoying fake accent.

  • There is nothing fake about his accent. He is a professional hired for the job.

  • Can't he get a better haircut.

  • This was not our focus. Pl look at the focus of the video. Linux / OSS implementation in Government and large organisations is the focus.

  • Very Cool. :)

  • Thanks

  • Great Initiative. Good Luck!!

  • Dear Sir,

I am amazed to see this video clip, excellent initiatives @ elcot... Congratulations and wish you all the best for all of your initiatives.

    Regards,

    Kiran Kumar.

  • Thanks Mr.Kiran Kumar.

  • Mr. Umashankar,

do you also specialize in Telecoms ?

  • ELCOT specialises in e-governance and IT park promotion (ELCOT has 9 IT-Special Economic Zones in Tamil Nadu) - Rgds. Umashankar

  • Suck that Windows Server and Microsoft

  • Sir,

Is it really OSS that you are using or a Priced version of Linux. I would agree if u would have used Open Suse but you have paid money to Novell to buy Linux. Please support OSS by using Open Suse.

    Michael OSS community

  • Frankly, since Novell provides the bulk of the funding for OpenSUSE, ELCOT is doing far more to support OpenSUSE by running SLED and SLES than they would be by running OpenSUSE. Thanks, ELCOT. You're making the computing experience better not just for India, but for all of us everywhere.

  • gpullis do u work for novell ? haha

  • After stabilising Suse linux, ELCOT has started deploying Ubuntu linux side by side. Ubuntu's latest offering (July 08) is simply the best. It enables automatic download, configuration and updating of the system. No need for tech. skill. One needs internet connection to install any new software requirement. Ubuntu's servers (free service) do the entire job for the user! Great experience indeed. Umashankar

  • My sincere congratulations on the important decision of migrating to linux for your business! I am a windows user and i used linux several times for my studies! I think that for a start-up company there is no better deal than the suse enterprise for the server applications! Comparing the costs and stability of the suse distribution and the windows server system, the linux is far more attractive! Greetings

  • Amazing work.

    Congratulations!

  • Thanks. Umashankar

  • It is great to see how staff have adopted to the new system. It is a commendable job to get them trained and make them accept, given the fact that motivation to do so would have been very low.

Kudos to ELCOT and the Leadership to have taken this forward.

Hope ELCOT can arrange for a fair or seminar to promote this in other states.

  • We have started training other Government officials, on payment of cost basis. Currently ELCOT's team is training a set of teachers in Tiruvallur district. The teachers have been paying Rs.2500 for the training from their funds. That is the level of interest they have shown. Umashankar

  • Finally TN is can be a leader in India going for the alternatives.....it can further its development by going to alternative fuels and going green.....Hats off to TN.

  • hi there! just wanted to know if there's an ELCOT office in Tuticorin (Thoothukudi) ?

  • Yes, ELCOT has a branch in Thoothukudi collectorate itself. Mr.Radha Ramanan is the Branch manager there.

  • i'm really glad to see linux spreading all across the globe, in the new developing world

  • Yeah, we in the non-developing world should learn from them!

  • Currently (Sep 07) all the microsoft systems are going down due to a severe virus problem. Unlike earlier time, the viruses on Ms OS affect the Indian systems with the same speed. Linux is a great relief. We are currently running over 500 linux desktops in our HO and 30 branches. No virus issue at all. No performance degradation. When people see this, they like it. It is a question of time before linux takes over the entire world, including the developed world.

  • Is Uma Shankar a directly recruited IAS officer? His English seems to be abysmal.

  • I am really sad about some comments on his accent. My four year old son speaks better accent than me since he live in US. Does it mean he is wiser?

I hope we all Indians feel India should improve and compete with every nation in the world.

We should support and preserve good people and good ideas.

Mr.Umashankar has the fire we all can take on and follow.

    -Mathivanan

    Santa Clara

  • Very rightly said mathivanan.

  • Thanks for the good comments. Our focus is CHANGE in Government. We made a huge splash so far. Only the future will tell whether the huge splash is a success as well. Umashankar

  • Keep up the good work!

  • I am a directly recruited IAS officer of 1990 batch. Apologies for my poor English accent. The video was taken without any rehearsal. To bring in a change such as linux in Indian government, English accent may be necessary but it is not the only requirement. Thanks. Umashankar

  • umashankar , thats a great initiative , but frankly the freedom aspect could have been said in a better way . This whole thing is not just about "cost savings" even some of the open source projects were possible only because "free" means "freedom" ;)

  • that was awesome! it's good to see companies making use of such great alternatives.

  • Thanks. We are trying to set an example for others to see. Seeing is believing. Whoever comes to our office goes back completely amazed. All the systems including laser printers, MFDs, digital cameras, handycams, projectors etc work only on linux. Umashankar

  • Richard M Stallman - Founder of OSS Concept. - WRONG!

  • Richard M Stallman - Found of OSS Concept. - WRONG!

  • Agreed. We are making the correction

  • I am glad to hear that!

  • Superb work by ELCOT on migration..Its time OSS communities focus towards the method of REUSING/recycling the electronic waste..

  • Very good job, Congratulation.

Now all Indian Govt. & School, collages should inspire from YOU, they should fill confidant about using Linux as a Desktop OS.

    Linux have a great Future.

  • We are taking 30000 desktops to the Schools with linux (Suse and Redhat) as the OS. By the end of July we hope to commission 25000 of them. By August another 5000.

  • Heard you are supplying computers as a dual OS, along with Windows OS too...

  • Now we are supplying systems only on suse linux. Less than 2% of the systems (out of 40000 desktops) are despatched with dual os or win OS alone. People have to justify the procurement of win OS. Umashankar

  • The important thing is that older PCs are being recycled, because generally Windows, aside from continually rising software costs, also requires increasing hardware demands =ie: alot of PCs that run XP,can't run Vista...BUT they CAN run Linux!I took Xp off of an old PC,put on Linux -the hard drive is NOT bad and now it flys!

  • Congratulations India and ELCOT for this move. And thank you for the explanatory video, nice work.

    Greetings from Argentina

  • It is our pleasure, sharing our experience

  • Nice to see so much of our software in this video - the KDE team at Novell :)

  • Thanks for the good KDE front end.

  • Amazing!! Hats off to TN Govt for their open source initiative.

  • Can you believe it their Kiosk machine only cost 1/5 on the market price? Unbelieveble don't you? Linux = Cost saving?

  • The cost savings are just mind-blowing. Hope all the Governments will follow this path.

  • It is cost saving + freedom. We have the freedom to choose and migrate to any other OSS system at will. And of course freedom to upgrade etc.

  • open source community dreamcome true thanks to elcot and Novell

  • wow!

  • Thanks for your comment. Umashankar, MD, ELCOT
