It could have been a number of greats in that spot, but Tunney's incredible speed & athleticism at Light-Heavy notched it out over guys like Ezzard Charles, Marvin Hagler, Carlos Monzon, Tommy Hearns, Larry Holmes, Etc. (Can't believe I played my dude, Holmes, but speaking objectively... Tunney made more sense when talking P4P)

If you want me to say it so badly, fine: Tyson's intelligence was his weakness, a weakness which eventually led to physical weakness in strategy. Tyson was by no means anything less than an incredible fighter at his peak, but to say that anyone is perfect, no matter what their training regime, is ignorant. Overwhelmingly ignorant. When Mike Tyson was in the care of Cus D'amato he couldn't be beaten. Look kid Lennox Lewis wasn't lying when he said Mike was just too much for him in the ring. This was when Cus was around. Things changed rapidly after Cus passed away, all of the sudden Don King shows up and all of these other leeches Robin Washington etc. You have to realize something kid, Cus was more than a trainer to Mike, he was his savior. Never really exploited for what it really was, but according to Cus, Mike had it far worse than Patterson had it both growing up in similar backgrounds. What made Cus the guy, everyone who knew Mike Tyson knew Cus was the guy for the job because he was the first of them all to help Mike find himself. Basically, no Cus no control no motivation. Mike was devastated when Cus passed away, show some respect kid your nothing more than fake website account name spreading lies.

You know what, one thing I can walk around and say I admire most about Mike to this day. It's the simple fact that just before Cus passed away Mike gave the promise that he would win the titles and become the youngest heavyweight champion of the world. Two weeks after Cus's death, Mike bursts into the gym and ran up to Kevin telling him these exact words, "I'm going to become the next heavyweight champion, because Cus said so". Kevin just looked at Mike and said, "Your already the champ".

It doesn't matter what the public thought. The truth is that the FIGHTERS were afraid of Tyson, which, like you said, led to their defeat. Tyson was just as great with Kevin Rooney; but Tony Tucker was the only boxer who stood up to Mike before his strategy started to fade. What did Tucker do? He put up a fight. And Tucker was not even a great great fighter. Imagine what better fighters, with trainers just as good as Cus D'amato (don't treat him like God, we both know there's others) would do.
