brilliant critic to the irrational capitalist economy and society. If i had to describe this song in a phrase would be something like "Pop can also be anticapitalist".
@Rankmoistmeat "The group's name was taken from a division of Vanguard Records demonstrating hi-fi effects" Makes perfect sense to me, based on the type of analogue electronic sound they have. I wouldnt say its boring at all, rather 1970's hip!
Que saudades da época boa da música, Stereolab me faz sentir nostalgia .... gosto mto dessa música e não me canso de ouvir. Não aguento mais a mesmice das músicas nas rádios, na tv ....
Why is there a pink needle in the beginning of this video? Should people tell them they are supportive of this? Is it a trick ,or lure to expose unwitting addicts? Something doesn't (fit) here.
By "the melody is perfectly ironic" I meant that, although the melody doesn't sound sad, depressive or in any way negative (as a matter of fact it seems to sound somewhat cheerful), ironically the lyrics talk about something quite the opposite, something sad and bad. That's the point.
@sampayu exactly, I just explained this song the exact same way when I posted it on my FB page. Dark social commentary overtop of a cheery little tune!

There's only millions that lose their jobs and homes and sometimes accents
There's only millions that die in their bloody wars, it's alright
It's only their lives and the lives of their next of kin that they are losing
Don't worry, be happy, things will ger better naturally
Don't worry, shut up sit down, go with it and be happy

It's alright 'cuz the historical pattern has shown how the economical cycle tends to revolve
In a round of decades, three stages stand out in a loop
A slump and war then peel back to square one and back for more
Bigger slump and bigger wars and a smaller recovery
Huger slump and greater wars and a shallower recovery

They just don't write them like they used to, eh?
Brilliant. Love Stereolab, esp their 91-96 output.

@backwardrawkcab It's not a needle, just something in the room and a lot of light, it kinda looks like it, but it's not.

Mary's voice always has a way of making any song sound cheerful, even when Laetitia's lyrics are about a bittersweet truth.

Of course I know the definition of "ironic"!
By "the melody is perfectly ironic" I meant that, although the melody doesn't sound sad, depressive or in any way negative (as a matter of fact it seems to sound somewhat cheerful), ironically the lyrics talk about something quite the opposite, something sad and bad. That's the point.
