  • I love this movie. We watch it every New Years Eve. This scene is one of my favorite. Ethan Hawke did a great job in it.

  • @thelethalchicken727 I'm glad you have expressed your opinion about me but I don't think everyone else cares about it, end of discussion and leave me alone and let me and everybody else enjoy the darn video... please.

  • What is the purpose of shoving snow in todd's mouth?

  • @speedstacker51 I still ask that question now ...

  • saw this video today was very sad

  • @LukeGriffths121 You know what I'm 13 and you have no right to talk to someone that you have no clue is an idiot or not. If you really wanna know, I have been through hell my 13 years and you know how many times i wanted to suicide. This should be no reason to suicide, just one thing that could be easily changed instead of putting a bullet through your head. Now if you want to continue calling me an idiot I will report you to Youtube and get you kicked off, be my guest. Just enjoy video and stop

  • @Szlosekisdaboss13 youre a douchebag

  • Don't tell me it wasn't his father ok? I know what he is going trough. I can relate to his situation. My father also keeps me away from my dreams. I really want to be a dancer and damn, everybody tells me I'm so good. It sounded unrealistic at first but when a got accepted to one of the most popular crews in town, I thought I might have a chance. Then my father made me quit, because he wants me to be a dentist. School is important, but dancing is first place for me .. Fathers can kill dreams !

  • Ethan Hawke is definitely one of my favorite actors! His performance in this movie is stunning! Woot woot!

  • dramatic

  • @SwingDanceBand... There is NEVER a reason to commit suicide, he could've continued his life and when he's 18 he could've done acting because he's old enough to do whatever he wants

  • @Szlosekisdaboss13 You're an idiot. Sometimes people see no way out. They spiral down into a state of depression that is so bad that they can't see any way out. It's not really about reasons. Don't chat shit about something you don't understand.

  • Good lord this movie makes me cry... :'(

  • Lol just watch some House and hes alive again. Kind of reminds you its just a movie, albiet a philosophical one

  • i can see both sides of the story, neil did disrespect his faher, but neil would have to grow up some time and make hius own decisions

  • I know a father like this. he had his son's life all planned out for him, and whoa to those who got in the way of his plans. he's blind to the fact his son has any other wants and desires other than what his dad wants. i'm waiting to here of something like this to happen to his son.

  • @godzilloid arn't you gonna atleast try and stop this

  • @xavierbot Tried. He threatened me with leagal action and had a restraining order taken out against me.

  • i love this movie and its so imotional at the end

  • Brilliant film. This one scene sets the standard for what a highly involving film should be. Interesting in the cast interviews on the DVD, what Kurtwood Smith says about his character of Neil's father and his relationship with his son "He didn't do this out of maliciousness, he loved this boy....he just went about it all wrong". Basically he thought he knew best for Neil, but Neil chose his own path and ended it, as he couldn't see anyway out? Ethan Hawke was terrific. They all were.

  • This is why teens need to be encouraged and not crushed. As a teen, with all the craziness and hormones and not all decision-making parts of your brain finished forming until you're 25... it's so easy for some people to make their last decision ever. People need to realize that emotion is not permanent. Depression, anger, sadness... none of them are permanent. Death is. So sad... and it's not just teens either. Sadder still. Life can always and will always change, if you let it.

  • i love this movie, and i cried so hard. hes father was stupid. end of story.

  • who the fuck cares?? its a shit movie

  • @TheDyldo101 gtfo

  • That really got to me

  • @playherone first off, that is a horrible thing to say, i hope you may never kill yourself or experience a suicide personally. second, there is NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING GAY, not now, not ever, being gay is just like having blue eyes or having a different skin color. third, what you meant to say was "and tried to push him towards a 'manly' profession" NOT "and tried to push him more towards a 'mans role' ". fourth, his father wasn't a mere shadow, his father controlled his life.

  • @playherone Wow. Did you even understand the movie? Really? If you didn't (and I doubt you did), Watch "V for Vendetta". Maybe that'll teach you a thing or two about life. Damn homophobe.

  • @playherone can you kill yourself anyway? We need less people like you on the planet.

  • @playherone skip the if

  • @playherone Ugh. I really do hate homophobes. Are you repressing your own feelings? Or are you really just that close-minded?

  • what does Todd scream at 1:50?

if anyone knows i would appreciate it

  • @coolnerdie perhaps it was a barbaric YAWP?

  • @jlkjoyful

i didn't even think of that! thank you :) . although he sorta shouted "his barbaric YAWP over the rooftops" at the end of the movie on his desk in my opinion.

  • @coolnerdie I think its DAMN

  • @coolnerdie im pretty sure he says "it was his FATHER." referring to the fact that because his father pressured him, Neil felt the only way to escape it was to kill himself. hope this helps.

  • Comment removed

  • @coolnerdie as far as i can tell he was just shouting Neil!

  • :C this is my favorite movie..

  • His father wasn't blind... man. It was poor Neil's weakness. Of course, his father could have been a bit more understanding, especially since Neil was doing great academically.

You have to think from his father's perspective as well. His father loved him and Neil's suicide crushed him as portrayed when he finds Neil's body.

  • @amdset

    Neil's dreams were a "weakness?"

  • @loner1878 I don't think he meant it like that. But people who consider suicide is a weakness generally have never had a valid reason to want to commit suicide. So, it's hard for them to understand it. Maybe I sound like a freak, but with so many emotions jumping through your body at 17/18, it's not hard to think there's no way out, like someone else also said already. 0

  • @amdset may you live long and have many daughters. his father only ever cared about what neil did if it applied to him. why do you think the flying desk set (and what some people consider young love) happened? neil may have been todd's muse, but that's NO reason for villifying your own son, as the end "o captain, my captain" scene proves.

  • @amdset no, red would still have stuck a foot up his ass if he thought it would make a man outta him.

  • @amdset though I agree that it is necessary to look at the father's side as well, and that it is made obvious that he loved Neil very much when he finds his body...i have to also agree that his father was blind, Neil knew that if he asked his father to be in the play he would say no...no matter how much he tried to convince him...so he had to do it himself, it was not an attempt to "make a liar out of him" as his dad assumes earlier in the movie, he just needed to prove it to his dad.

  • @amdset IT is not a weakness to be a teenager. But after years of taking emotional abuse from a ruthless, unforgiving parent, a teenager can commit suicide. Suicide rates are highest among teenagers and seniors. The weak one is the adult who could not see what his lack of compassion was doing to one so impressionable.

  • @SwingDanceBand "Abuse" is a strong word. Neil's father was just strict and overbearing.

  • @amdset as much as neil's father loved him, i know what he went through. it's hard to keep going on when the ones whom you want to impress most tear down your dreams. if i had the guts to actually kill myself i would have done so; the only thing that has kept me going is knowing that one day i can do what i want and have the chance to be happy. neil's dad wasn't blind, but he was ignorant. any parent would be able to see when their child is happiest, and neil's dad chose to ignore it.

  • @amdset i don't think he understood how much acting meant to neil, and that's the result of miscommunication; years and years of obedience that is difficult to break. at 17, teens need to be able to think independently. if we fail, we fail; the true test comes from how we jump back from those failures and continue to move on.

  • @amdset Have you ever felt truly suicidal? It's not weakness, the unraveling of all the lies we tell ourselves and the pain after all the means of coping have disappeared. You are faced with cold hard reality, my dreams will not come true, I might be miserable for the rest my life. To feel suicidal is not a emotion or impulse as is seemly implied, it is a calculated decision that death is a preferable alternative a life of despair. Would you rather die by fire or a bullet?

  • Why was his father so blind.... X(

  • This scene made me cry.

  • a tear to my eye...everytime

  • Oh God i cried SO hard when i saw these scenes ...

    thanks for uploading it !

This movie kinda rocked my world if i can say... Ethan Hawke really is a great actor, and i can relate so much to Todd... Plus, he's just adorable, so cute -3 !
