  • u should get a flat cart put a go pro on it and a little flash light on top of the go pro and send it threw the mountain.or any kind of camera

  • @mcdade101 I'm thinking getting one of those camera's I've seen at Micro Mark and doing a layout tour video. I just need to get beyond the thinking stage and actually get the camera. 8-)

  • nice layout! I cant find some ideas for mine

  • Wow awesome work, I starting a On30 layout using your technique for making mountains. Keep up the great work

  • were's the passenger trains? if you don't have passenger trains i sugest that you get some. they will light up the scenery and the whole layout.

  • were's the passenger trains?

  • is this dc or dcc?

  • thats cool as i am trying to do something like that but smaller on a 8 ft X 5ft board

  • GOOD VIDEO!!!!! xxD

  • really bad camera work

  • Awesome Tutorial! You made my layout plans easier.

  • wat do u do if there is a crash or a train derails inside the mountain?

  • @HandleyHalifax I can get to the trains from underneath.

    E

  • sooo coll i mean how do u even get the complexity of those tunnels

  • thats really nice ! thanks for posting.

  • WOW Great inspritation

  • howd u make the mountain? im a beginning model train person and id like to add a mountain to my layout? any suggestions?

  • here's your lucky man, Step #1. take a peice of flat cardboard or somethin like that would be good. Then stack up some newspaper and tape it to the board. Step #2. put a grassmatt over it and then use a hairdryer or somethin' but use a glove on your NON-DOMINATE hand; the one you're pushing down on the matt. Step #3. it will turn into a plastic mold or somethin like that, put it down on a table or your layout and glue it with modeling pray. Put on scenery to cover edges. Step #4. HAVE FUN!!!!!!!

  • some snow on top of your mountains in the corner would look neat.

  • wow thats amazing u have done a great job, i wish i had the room to do this

  • that was so damn cool. i need to copy and paste this to show this to my cousin so she can show it to one of her sons. he's really into trains and the whole bit. just seeing the whole scenic detail brought back some memories of one of my old neighbors who had built a train set that looked like a little town with the trees and everything else. you did a good job. everything looks so realistic. too bad your video wasn't longer. i was such in a daze with amazement. please make more videos.

  • Hiya Big61 Wait untill you see my layout Watcombe Sands it is based on the Riviera Line on the South Devon Banks ie between Dawlish and Teignmouth ive still got lots of work to do it will feature typical trains on that line such as HSTs Classes 47 50s 45&46s( the peak locos) DMU classes such as Class 150 156 158 Sprinters and class159 Networkers and 142 railbuses

  • mad as bro good job ;)

  • i subscribed to you like a half a year ago and it got deleted somehow so i just resubscribed to you and great layout this video inspired me to put mountains on my layout

  • cool

dso u make any trips to help on theres

  • you should get some people and put them on the hill near the little station where the tunnel is then it will look like the people are climbing the hills

  • I actually plan on doing something like that.

    E

  • hey whoa i love ure tutorials and this vid as well was wondering if u cud get a video with a small camera attached to 1 of ure locomotives it wud be pretty amazing

  • My 5 year old son loves to watch your videos. He is a big fan of trains and he was curious how do you get the trains out when they derail inside the tunnel? Thanks! and btw he says " you did a very good job with the track. He wants me to build him one just like it!"

  • Most train layouts have an uncovered side/bottom for the tunneled mountains. Note how in this one, its built into a corner of the layout, but the author is careful not to show you the back side. There probably isn't one. He can just reach in and fix the problem.

Oh god I hope he don't insist on that...

  • well, in my home layout, i have a lower manhattan/ brooklyn mta layout going, and on top, a big 2 track level that goes for ever long, but in my tunnel, i put a piece of black felt in, but it looks like a vertical drop of a mountain.

  • looks like someone ran past a red signal...

Is the mountain with all the tunnels is the center point of your layout? or just a neat way to gain elevation? either way, it's a nice accent to you model

  • The mountain scene is one of several points on the layout. I just show it because it's the most complete section.

    E

  • N scale ? dcc or just dc

  • N scale and DCC.

    E

  • what are the switching switchers called? I NEED THOSE!

  • I'm not too sure what you mean. If you're talking about what I use to move the points they are Caboose Hobbies N Scale ground throws.

    E

  • At 0:08. what you use to switch the turnout

  • Caboose Hobbies N Scale ground throw

  • What scale is it.

  • N Scale

  • ok nice

  • nice layout

  • Your tunnels are amazing.

  • he likes tunnels

  • Actually I like mountains, which in turn leads to lots of tunnels...

    E

  • thats what he said

  • do you have a loop of ho running around the bottom of the layout

  • Yes. It was for my kids when they were younger.

  • All I can say is that is a beautiful layout and keep up the awesome work.

  • Thanks! I'll be doing more work on it and posting more videos when summer's over.

  • You're welcome, I'm looking forward to seeing your upcoming videos, Ive subscribed to your videos.

  • how much pot did it take to make this thing?

  • Your track plan is so confusing but i love it

  • Very nice work. You have inspired me.

  • Why sooo many tunnels? Wouldn't you rather see your trains run than to have them keep disappearing? You have very nice scenery.... Keep up the great work...

  • how long does it take to run a complet train around your layout?

  • If I go a scale speed (25mph)on the Mountain line it takes about 10 minutes.

  • Those mountains and tunnels are awesome!

  • very pretty the model congratulations

  • unbalevably amazing work with the foam wow i am absolutly stuned awsome layout !!!!!!!

  • That whould suck if the train whent off the track in the tunnel

  • that mountain looks great, i really like the style of the land scape too

    5/5

  • How did you clear the height differences?

  • The grad on that mountain run is 2% so I tried to design the loops so that there was a minimum of 8 feet of track between crossings. This put about about 2 inches of separation between the tops of the road bed. There were a couple of places where I had to use a router to cut a channel in the roadbed to proved more clearance for the track running underneath. I have pictures of what I did on my website. There is a link to it on my youtube channel.

  • Once you get to my site click on the link to my "Construction Progress" page and then click on the "November 2003" link. There is a picture there of a crossing where I had to cut a channel to allow for better clearance.

    E

  • this guy is tunnel LOCO

  • I am new to scenery building. Can describe how you lay out your track (on wood or foam), and how you attach the track so it does not move? Also, is it wise to cover the track and ties during the whole process?

    Thanks for your help.

    Pete

  • Awsome layout, you should put some trees in. not many, just a few

  • Yeah...I'll get around to it at some point.

  • What type of road bed did you use and how did you attach it to the foam board? Do you put your track nails into the foam through the track mat?

  • The sub roadbed is 3/4 inch plywood. The roadbed is N scale cork. I use a thin layer of Elmer's Squeez 'N Caulk to hold the track in place. I don't use nails to hold the track in place.

  • I will be using Atlas Flex track and have to tack it down to keep the shape. So is all of your elevated track built on a skelleton of plywood, then the foam built up around that wood frame? I have just built a table frame and wanted to know if I should put a flat deck down and then build up, or start laying the road bed on wood cut outs of the curves as they change elavation.

  • > So is all of your elevated track built on a > skeleton of plywood, then the foam built up > around that wood frame?

    Yes

    >I have just built a table frame and wanted to >know if I should put a flat deck down and >then build up.

    Do this option.

  • Thanks for the advise. I'm looking forward to start building up my platform this weekend. How long is your BNSF engine? Will it make a 18"R turn?

  • I have a curve that's slightly under a 14" radius and the engine handles it without any problems. I think a 14" radius is considered a conventional curve and most(if not all) N scale Diesels will handle it fine. I think a larger steam engine(like a Challenger) might have some issues but I can't say for sure since I don't run any steam.

  • Absolutely mindblowing...

  • The amount of room you have to work with is seriously unfair....lol

  • this is a stupid question to ask and i know the answer but, did u put the track down first or the scenery?

  • I put the roadbed and track down first and covered it with blue painters masking tape. I did the scenery after that.

  • and why did i ask that?

  • exactly what color brown was that? that was used to paint the foam?

  • It's a color called "Maple Sugar" I got at Ace Hardware.

  • thanks you so much, because i bought bolder brown, let me tell you, lol it looks like dog poo!!!

  • did you have to add to the color once you got it, it looks lighter than what i see in your video, i did buy it today and wanted to ask you that before i applied it to my layout thanks

    Melvin

  • ya! sd-70's
