speed calculator says 2 gear shift at 6000rpm is between 65mph and 70mph with 3.54 rear end, with 1.97 2nd gear and 285/40/17. if you freeze at 0:27 he is in second gear at about 6100rpm and 70mph so this is believable.
Hey I just turned 16 and I been thinking of what would be the perfect first car, now I live in the New England area so the winters get pretty bad but I like Infiniti's they're very luxurious. Are they good in the snow though? I would like any personal feedbacks and stories about your Infiniti's please. Thanks!
First, get all the maintenance done on the car. Second, don't run any gas with ethanol. Use pure gas if available. Finally, make sure that your tire pressures are at 35 psi and that your trunk is free of unnecessary weight.
wow what a great comment, i mean, wow, just the most insightful thing I have ever read. The Nissan VH45 engine is so far ahead of the fucking LS1 that it's not even funny.
ok then I apologize, you nico are a great bunch. Sorry I didn't detect the sarcasm, but I've seen so many dumb rednecks go on and on about LS1 this and LS1 that and LS1 the other thing that I go nuts when I see another, lol. Please accept my apology, haha.
My first car was a '90 Q45. I loved the flat cornering and amazing V8 growl at midrange. I sold it after 3 years and bought a reliable but soul-less '96 LS400 and four years later sold that for a '96 Maxima SE 5MT. Fun and even quicker than the Q. Gotta love Nissan.
it sounds like your turbo is way to small to but only running 6psi (effiencently)
not talking shit the car is fast just might wanna up the size of the turbo, somthing like a hx35 should pull nicely and make a full 8psi of so at 2500-3000rpm but 8psi on the holset will be allot more cfm than the current setup
How can you tell a turbo is too small by listening to the wastegate? Just curious.
Anyway, the turbo that I'm running is a T-76 which is good for over 900+hp, so I don't think it is too small. If you click on the link in the description above, you'll see the turbo. Peace.
8 PSI from one turbo on a given motor is the same CFM as 8PSI from any other turbo. An engine has a constant displacement and thus will flow the same CFM at a given pressure regardless of source. The only thing that could change is charge density due to heat from a compressor operating outside it's efficiency range. A T-76 is a plenty large enough and the AR on the hotside is much better suited towards a high rpm gas motor than is a HX35 (which is a great turbo). I'd say he's chosen quite well.
Good job man, the car pulls hard. I got 91 Q45 which pulls hard too. I did a jdm engine swab on it with NGK Iridium spark plug, cold air intake and custom exsuast. If I had time and money I would put the turbo that would be awesome.
You've got a decent amount of work done on your Q. If I were you, I wouldn't spend any more money on other mods. Just save up the cash for a turbo system. It was the best mod that I ever did to the Q45. Dollar for dollar, best performance for the money. Peace.
The 0-60 is approx. 5 secs. The turbo is huge so it takes a bit of time for spool-up. Once boost hits, the car takes off. If you measure the 60-100 time, it only takes 5 secs. That is a dramatic improvement from stock.
I cant believe it even cost you that much. I did a engine compartment config in my mercedes and im still under 2500 using brand name stuff(greddy, aem f/ic, garrett, etc.)
My actual cost for the whole thing is closer to $2k but I did spend quite a bit of time getting stuff at the best prices. I think for most people an estimate of $3-5k is fair.
Yeah same here lol. Build took me all summer. I hope to build a e430 remote turbo like yours. The e430 has the same hp and compression so it should be very similar. Maybe we could line em up :)
Actually, my turbo is in the engine bay. Check out the other vid to see it. My friend, QSIGUY, has his turbo at the rear on his Q45. Either way will work. Your Benz should have similar performance especially since your car is lighter.
The only thing I'm using is a BEGI FMU which increases fuel pressure as boost increases. The 90-96 Q45 came with decent sized injectors so I didn't need to do too much. The car is running the stock ECU without any problems.
wow nice about the turbo system.. um u said u made it urself.. how did u evacuate the oil from the turbo back into the oil pan?? did u use an evacuation pump.. and did u have to build the car some before u turbo'd it?? i need help im gonna turbo my non turbo 280zx and idk if i need to do anything other than bigger injectors.. and how did u tune ur car??
The turbo is in the engine compartment so I don't need a pump for the oil return. Check out my other vid which shows the turbo placement. As far as the engine, it is stock with the stock injectors. The 90-96 Q45 come with 370cc injectors, good for approx. 450 hp at 43 psi. I'm running a blow-thru MAF which enables the ECU to see the exact air flow from the turbo system. I'm also running a BEGI FMU which gives me extra fuel psi as boost increases. Final tuning was done with a wideband O2 monitor.
It's not too bad for a car that weighs in at 4200 lbs. Hope to improve upon it soon. I've upped the boost to 7.5 psi since the vid but the weather is too hot for a good run. How much power are you putting out on your X9? Sounds like it's a 11 second 1/4 mile car with a 0-100 mph in 7.8 seconds.
I agree, its very VERY GOOD actually for your car. My X9 is tweaked to 167HP (no turbo) (without the other extra's). its 0-100kmh in 7.8 sec, lol, not mph. Top speed 247kmh MAX. Its does have a 2.0 engine. Its not much power, but my drag-coefficient is 0.2875 (VERY GOOD). Thats what makes it so fast on the straight. I am willing to buy a Land Cruiser 100 series, just a lovely car, but the MPG is DAMN low and the DRAG is extremely HIGH! This car will KILL me.
Your X9 is light enought that it would be crazy fast with a small amount of boost. Most cars can take 7-8 psi without any engine modifications. All you need to address is the fuel and ignition needs. I did a lot of mods on my car before I built the turbo system. I wish that I had just done the turbo first. Everything else was not the worth the trouble IMHO. Boost is the easiest way to improve performance.
after 6000 RPM, right until redline there is a significant boost in torque. Maybe you should config it to offer this lower, such that it starts to top off at 7000 RPM.
The high rpm power is because the turbo is huge. As is, the car starts making full boost by around 3600 rpm. If I want it to be lower, I would probably have to run nitrous and I don't feel like dealing with that headache.
It's pushing around 440 hp according to my calculations. The large exhaust side on the turbo lets the engine breathe much better at high rpms hence the dramatic power increase at low boost pressure. Once the turbo spools up, this thing is crazy fast. You really have to pay attention. Sometimes, driving it is a bit scary especially on tight roads. LOL.
The odometer has over 203k miles on it. The diff was rebuilt with 4.08 gears by UNITRAX. The LSD is still tight and I can light up both tires pretty easy but, eventually, the viscous LSD will give out and I'll have to do something about it then. I'm thinking of going with a Quaiffe LSD.
I stopped using Mobil 1 ever since they switched their base stocks to Group 3. The only good Mobil 1 oil is the 0w-40 which is still based on Group 4 base stocks. Currenty, I'm running Castrol Syntec European Formula 0w-30 which is an excellent oil. This is an excellent oil based on Group 4 base stocks. The rest of the Syntec line is Group 3 and is not worth it. Peace.
It's hard to nail down the prices of stuff since it varies. You can pick up a turbo like mine for a less than a grand if you shop around. The rest of the stuff came from Ebay. I haven't kept tabs on the total cost but since I built everything myself, it wasn't much.
Are you running a MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor or a MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor? My car has the stock MAF sensor that is placed after the turbo. I have no problems with hunting idle. The key is to make sure that the ECU sees all the air that is coming into the engine. You can't have any open air or vacuum hoses. That throws off the idle and causes all kinds of problems.
well whats the cost of this turbo you have and do you have a safc with it I had one for mine worked great and do you know if the tranny from a 300zx TT is the same? My SC might be cheaper since i fabed up a bracket for it.
Yeah...superchargers can be problematic. I say you should go with a turbo setup. It isn't is hard to do as most people think. I built it myself by taking my time and thinking things out before I did the work. Let me know if you need any help. Peace.
That sounds about right for the 0-60. It could be better if I can get the turbo to spool up quicker. As is, it is spooling by 3300 rpm which is not that bad for a large turbo. But if I can get it to spool by something like 2500 rpm, then the acceleration times would drop noticeably. Also, turning up the boost would make a huge difference. Right now, it's only at 6 psi.
How much power can these engines take in at stock? Any ideas? I here the bottom ends are weak and fail around 350-400whp...I got that info. on the infinity forums..
I'm running at least 420 hp right now without any problems. My friend, QSIGUY, is running 8 psi on his car also without problems. The VH45DE can handle boost as long as the tuning is done right. As far as the limit of the stock engine, my guess is that it is somewhere around 14-16 psi.
I've had this car for over 10 years now and put a lot of work into it. The turbo was my latest project. I hope to keep it for a long time. Decent Q45s are hard to find nowadays.
I just picked up a Q45 a month ago. Great condition, and was only $2500. Guess I got really lucky. Anyways, I have around $300 left after a new radiator and A/C Charge. I was curious as to if you had any suggestions on a muffler I should buy for it. Thanks :)
You don't need to get a new muffler, just replace the rear suitcase muffler with straight pipes and the car will sound very nice. Check out my vids for the muffler delete that I did on my other Q45.
The engine bay looks relatively stock but I had to change a lot of stuff around like the radiator, cooling fan, battery, oil filter, and a bunch of other stuff. All the emission stuff is still there so the car is legit for road use.
I've got the stuff to close off the wastegate, just need some time to do the work. I did all the work myself so that saved a lot of money. It took me about 6 months, doing everything as time permitted.
Odd. That must have been a thrilling ride though. The turbo sounded scary. I've never heard a VH45DE sound like that before. How loud does it get in the car?
The open wastegate is not that loud inside the car, mostly due to the sound insulating qualities of the Q. Outside is a different matter. It sounds like a jet engine and it is scary when you first hear it. They call open wastegates "screamer pipes". Now I know why.
oh god I can see the gas gauge going down

How much power can these engines take in at stock? Any ideas? I here the bottom ends are weak and fail around 350-400whp...I got that info. on the infinity forums..

I'm running at least 420 hp right now without any problems. My friend, QSIGUY, is running 8 psi on his car also without problems. The VH45DE can handle boost as long as the tuning is done right. As far as the limit of the stock engine, my guess is that it is somewhere around 14-16 psi.

I owned a 92 Q45 and it was a monster bone stock... just imagine with a turbo what a machine... nice car !!!For sale?

I've had this car for over 10 years now and put a lot of work into it. The turbo was my latest project. I hope to keep it for a long time. Decent Q45s are hard to find nowadays.

yeah they are mine was stolen and it was in pretty good shape inside and out... so yeah you are right Q45s are hard to find take care of that baby

Ya I already checked out that video, and it sounds amazing, but my brother was telling me that it's illegal to do that. Is that true?
tvrhl69 2 years ago
It's not illegal since it doesn't affect emissions nor does it make the car intolerably loud.

I'm very impressed. You've proved that the VH45DE can be turbo-ed in the engine bay without changing the exterior appearance. Sweet.
I've seen the VH turbo-ed in 300ZX's and motorboats.

The engine bay looks relatively stock but I had to change a lot of stuff around like the radiator, cooling fan, battery, oil filter, and a bunch of other stuff. All the emission stuff is still there so the car is legit for road use.

Wow. Did you ever move to a closed wastegate? All in all, how much did it cost to get this done? How long did it take?
floeji 4 years ago
I've got the stuff to close off the wastegate, just need some time to do the work. I did all the work myself so that saved a lot of money. It took me about 6 months, doing everything as time permitted.

Odd. That must have been a thrilling ride though. The turbo sounded scary. I've never heard a VH45DE sound like that before. How loud does it get in the car?
floeji 4 years ago
The open wastegate is not that loud inside the car, mostly due to the sound insulating qualities of the Q. Outside is a different matter. It sounds like a jet engine and it is scary when you first hear it. They call open wastegates "screamer pipes". Now I know why.

Was that the SLIP light that kept coming on? Have you tried it without TCS?
floeji 4 years ago
Actually, for some reason the Airbag light started flashing that day when I started up the car. It was doing it on start-up.

it was just telling you, holy shit you got too much damn power, just be safe with me! =] great car man, i love your vids
