She's great, of course. She's just amazing but on the other hand, the dress, the position, even gestures and emotion is copied from whom? Don't you recognize Callas? And so on and on... sopranos are coping Callas even now.
laying aside the stupidity of the pro/anti callas brigade - this is a good performance! [and, yes, it IS possible to be BOTH a Nilsson fan and a Callas fan as I am]

calas wasent "just anouther pretty voice" she was special, no one coud do what she did! the emotion, the expression, the musicality, the vocal acrobatics, no one coud/can match her.
Why all the people argue about who's better than who? If Nilsson has a better top than Price, if Leontyne has a better tone than Callas, If Maria was a better actress than Montserrat, If Caballé's pianissimi are incomparable...They were all great in her very unique way. Just enjoy them because this kind of mastery is no longer available!
what was there to be jealous of? She was on the stage cause of her looks, sounded horrible and had mountains of personal problems. No one really wanted her until she lost all that weight.. still sounded bad though.
I borrow Callas' words when I say that comparing two (and more) outstanding singers is like comparing "champagne" to "cognac"- one isn't better than the other, they just have a different taste and texture. That's what makes them all different and I love it :)
Forget whether she was a Wagner singer, a Strauss singer, a Verdi singer, or a Puccini singer, and certainly the quite stupid arguments about whether she was a bel canto singer. Simply look and listen to one of the most beautiful performances imaginable. She was equally at home in all of the above, not just Wagner.I saw her in Tosca,Turandot, Tristan, Walkuere, Elektra, and in concert. I could never say which was the greatest. She was simply incomparable in each role. A unique singer.
I'm new to opera - and am loving Youtube for making it easy, and fun, to listen and learn. While I'm finding Wagner a hard sell for me, I'm drawn to Birgit Nilsson. I just listened to this aria by Callas, Sutherland, and Nilsson - and Birgit Nilsson is my favourite. I'm glad swe50 posted the story of the dress in this clip.
Interesting post. I confess for some, unlike you, it takes several listenings to warm to Nilsson's RECORDED voice. At first my wife immediately liked Callas, but thought Nilsson's voice "was not characteristic. But after a few listenings there was no going back for her. Nilsson was queen, diva assoluta! It's another story in the opera house; even first timers are OVERWHELMED by the majesty and beauty of her voice. I envy you your journey into Wagner/Nilsson. What discoveries lie ahead!!
I also love her as Tosca..I love the Decca recording with Corelli and Dieskau...she had a majestic voice and she can really act as Tosca...her voice is not Italian but that didnt matter at all...she could sing with passion and with dramatic phrasing...this is a treat to see
Shortly before her death Birgit Nilsson was interviewed in her home in Sweden. It was a fragile, almost shy veteran that spoke with humility of her achivements. She pulled out the exact dress as the one she´s wearing in the clip and blushingly said she´d never wore anything so beautiful in her entire career. I love Birgit Nilsson. She made a difference in my life. Towads the end she was as alone as we will all be.
Thanks for posting this story - I'm new to opera and as I posted earlier for this video, am drawn Birgit Nilsson. This story rather confirms the beautiful person she must have been - a "something" I hear in her singing.
I know many people says who's good in Strauss is a good Puccini interpreter. Ok I think this isn't Nilsson's best. But She deserved to be heard 'cause she's great enough to pull herself into a fach that is far away from hers. She can embodied Floria Tosca. a very different Tosca...
Consistantly brilliant. Birgit Nilsson is able to shed one skin and move into another without losing any feeling and retaining the disposition and temperament Thank you.
Nilsson was superb in this role, and her commercial recording with Corelli and Fischer-Dieskau is excellent. I saw her three times in this role; her Metropolitan Opera performance with Domingo in 1969 was unforgettable.
love it love it love it.

Callas é imbatível nessa música... Falem o que quiser, mas ela era a Tosca em pessoa... Magnífica e com talento especial.
