Paul u dont need a torch in front of the door, only when theres a blood moon or a goblin invation... Also the reason the worm "ran" away, is that all worms including eater of worlds, only travel through blocks. So when they hit air they jump.

One tip for the entrance security -- Instead of blocking the door (i.e. placing objects or walls next to it), you can make the ground level right outside the door two or more blocks lower than the level of the door. This way, monsters will just keep jumping outside the door, because they need to stand in front of it first to attempt to open it (by pounding on it), but now the door is above them, while players can just open it first and then jump into the house.

If you place the torch at the inside, nobody can open the door from the outside. To get in turn away from the door and then open it. No mob is able to do that move.

@NochSoEinKaddiFan and please start using the shift key for quick select the specific tool for the job(hammer for furniture, pick for dirt etc.) If you point on the block with the cursor and hold shift down. You dont have to have the tool in your hot bar to make this work
