I made light of the situation by pointing out the way she says Ensenada reveals she is from Spain and not from, for example, Mexico (i.e., different accent). Do you get why I said it now? Yes, it was. I kept the episode and keep playing back the part where the daughter oversings "strung out on heroin" part. It got me into a good song and some great artists. I just love the series. The original song by Warren is ok, but he sounds kind of dead compared to GG, although the instrumentals are good. I wish I could find a recording of the spanish chick to download.

@hodgbr Part 1: Funny, I just went through the same exercise as you and your friends listening to as many versions of Carmelita as I could find. I arrived at a similar conclusion as you and your friends with one exception. I respectfully believe Izar Herrans cover is even stronger than GG Allins. To my ear this young lady sings Carmelita with more compelling prosody and greater passion than the others.

@hodgbr Part 2: For my taste GG Allins cover sounded like a barroom sing-a-long. What I like about Izar Herrans cover in comparison is the music is focused just her voice and acoustic guitar and her voice is out front. GG Allins version for me is cluttered with electric guitar, drums, cymbals, harmonica, accordion and a bouncy beat.
