In all seriousness, I think it would be in this nations' best interests to have all funds directed to science, education, healthcare, and domestic defense (I use that as a blanket term for the national guard, police force, and firefighters) rather than bailing out banks and bombing Western Asia.
He says NASA gets 1/2 a penny per dollar from our tax dollars. If I could, I would put at least 5 pennies each. Imagine if we all did that? No cuts on other regions, just add more tax, to NASA. Imagine out fast we could go in terms of technology.
0:21 The 6.8 billion dollars spent on the war does not bring back the 8 dollars per 1 dollar spent (not saying for the project would bring all that back) but space is the better investment. GIVE THE MONEY TO SCIENCE
Imagine the possibilities at hand if we invested everything into science starting tomorrow. Its a shame we are so busy with our personal beliefs and that we have to kill each other over it.
@Rywen His statement is so true he's understating it, we spend more than the next 17 countries combined. Google "defence spending always more or else" and the economist article talks about it and cites its sources.
This man is quickly becoming a new hero for not only the thinking American public, but to lovers of science and dreaming about tomorrow all over the world.
Got two of his books in today. Can't wait to devour those (nom nom)
"...my goal, then, is not to become President and lead a dysfunctional electorate, but to enlighten the electorate so they might choose the right leaders in the first place."
It is a shame we stopped spending money on Scientific Projects. We could of built a Large Hadron Collider but congress didn't want to spend the 12 billion dollars on it, it would have been larger then the one in Europe. What the fuck is 12 billion dollars compared to what else is in the budget.
It's all about logic, the congress are a bunch of old farts, just look at the SOPA bill. deGrasse has a tendency to explain things just like the way they are. Things are even more convoluted then what is perceived, there is a lot of disinformation taking place powered by large corporations. How much are the black budget projects costing US?
@HoneyPatchworks No, no, no! We do still need defense spending. We need to stop fighting the wars on terror and drugs. Also, we need to fund Education and Healthcare. I do largely agree that NASA needs huge funding and actually I think it should be international and handled by the U.N. that buy...er, I mean fund every year.
If the government invested heavily you would see a constantly expanding economy and a great society as a whole. Its basic economics that technology and education create more productivity that leads to greater societies. This has held constant and it baffles me that education and technology have such a small portion of our budget.
I've heard similar thoughts regarding scientists in general, and while it would be nice to have someone with a scientific mindset in positions of political power, don't forget the end result of such an action: you are taking scientists away from doing science. That is emphatically *not* a good thing.
@Xeno426 I think a few scientists from various fields would be good. Not filling the government with them, but giving them some official say in things. Perhaps they could figure out a better budget (that could lead to more/better scientists), get some long term thinking into there, and be reasonable. Perhaps get past this whole "career politician" system, so even the scientists who are in the government are not for long.
@marsCubed Yes, the GOP has done most of the damage but the Democrats have done a lot also. NDAA is under the Obama watch and it is more repulsive in its damage to Civil liberties than much of what W did. The 2 parties sucker everyone into opposing one of the wings of the same party, the demopublicans. Because people don't understand the stealing that is done with an unbacked currency and high taxes they actually do the work and bidding of the top 1%. The 1% are much smarter and evil.
@marsCubed Your models are simple left-right rich-poor ones that are invented by the 1%. Wise up and have a more nuanced view of a complex system. Inequality increased because lobbyists used the government to rig the system and steal along with the politicians. The military, banks, big pharma, old world media and much more enslave you because you don't understand how government is your enemy and their tool. You have the right complaints, just the wrong analysis and solutions.
These clowns think that there is a infinite blob of money and they have lots to spread around to their favorite boondoggle. All this because the other idiots are spending money they don't have on their favorite boondoggle. And people wonder why everything is broken.
It is a myth that money is there in heaps. The naive world view of he common citizen is shaped by political parties propaganda and everyone falls for this in a big way. Missing from this thin analysis are figures for the deficit. The money is printed, and backed by nothing. You will pay for this as you have been all along, by higher and higher costs for goods and service. At some point you might suspect you have been had. Just maybe.
@TomFynn Just as naive as MarsCubed your nuff said is NOT enough. Look at deficit figures and cost of living figures. I know you probably haven't thought about these relationships but after all, aren't you a "science guy"? Siting wasteful spending is hardly a defense of more wasteful spending.
@TomFynn You only want to cut defense by 50%?? That doesn't even get us back to the Bush level defense spending which was a historic record. The trouble with you is that you have no sense of proportion, history or detail.
@GomersRevenge Back to defense level spending? You do know that since 1962 the US defense department spending (inflation adjusted) was never below $350 billion?
But telling other they have no sense of proportion, history or detail. You are a poster boy for the Dunning-Kruger effect.
spot on, I really didn't see it that way but he is right: all those optimistic newspaper reports 'we all will be using flying cars...' have disappeared. Sure most of them were ludicrous but it is about the spirit of dreaming and reaching for the next goal.
dude i know its sad that science and dreams may be lacking now and humanity is taking a step backward... but Afghanistan seriously needs freedom from terrorism and we seriously need those poppy seeds for our bagels
Ok, the bailouts were a waste of money, the war in Afghanistan is a waste of money, and NASA was a waste of money. How about some consistency with just no government spending at all?
Big Govt Fed agency NASA promised the Space Shuttle at $7 million per launch, yet it cost over $1.5 billion per launch...
Thanks to NASA, no American has left low earth orbit for the 40 years since Apollo... despite throwing $500 billion down this Govt black hole...
We need to privatize our US manned space effort... not waste another 40 years and $500 billion or more trusting a big govt pork/waste filled agency like NASA..
@wrwhiteal If by "doctors us" you mean "doctors us only when we fall into the appropriate risk group and/or have no preexisting conditions from this or any previous life" then yes, they doctor us. Pretty sure you should keep health care out of your libertarian rants.
I disagree with NGT. Americans still have dreams for tomorrow. They can dream and work to make it in business and get some of that free cash the government is throwing around.
I disagree that NASA is the only program that gives people something to "dream about tomorrow". There are many other academic programs getting the short-end of the stick. Anyone ever think that perhaps NASA years are at an end; that maybe something else should take its place?
i want to know right now why i can not find the video of the press conference the secretary of the department of education not that long ago (i hope it wasn't that long ago) stated that the american people have stopped dreaming. he stated as this man did in this video we have stopped dreaming. someone please link me the video of the press conference in which the secretary of the dept of edu stated this. please and thank you. that video in question is what i was looking for before watching this.
Tyson didn't over estimate, he underestimated. New information released shows that banks were lent TRILLIONS of dollars at a rate of nearly 0% interest.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The bailout was 700 billion not 850. The smartest man in the room got it wrong by a million dollars 1,500 times over. I thought this guy was an astrophysicist.
I see science expenditures like NASA as part of national defense. He who has the best technology is the most powerful. While at the same time, we benefit from all the scientific advancements in ways we can't imagine today. Thus, as a libertarian, I think it is necessary for government to throw money at it. It sure beats wasting money killing people in the desert.

Dreaming is not permitted by capitalism.
It's 'glorious leader' bosses leading sheep in rat-race..
The worst swindler you pay to be on your side (the boss gets more. ie it comes out of your wages). it is all about promise.
The promise that the boss getting more is worth it.. because their success will trickle down.
The opposite is democracy, everybody having a say.. paying the boss less and relying more on open debate (like N. Europe).
Then populations dream. ie Denmark & her giant wind farms.

The richest 400 people in USA own as much as 50%.
1% own around 45%. (hockey-stick curve)
80%, the vast majority, have less than 7% left between them.
The past 30 years saw inequality soar. welfare was in surplus for decades to come.. given away to the richest few.
That's the crisis.
de skilled population ranting for less education & GOP swindlers.
jobs going to high tax N. Europe.
hey.. you get swindler you like.. hurrah for you.
marsCubed 2 months ago
@marsCubed Yes, the GOP has done most of the damage but the Democrats have done a lot also. NDAA is under the Obama watch and it is more repulsive in its damage to Civil liberties than much of what W did. The 2 parties sucker everyone into opposing one of the wings of the same party, the demopublicans. Because people don't understand the stealing that is done with an unbacked currency and high taxes they actually do the work and bidding of the top 1%. The 1% are much smarter and evil.
GomersRevenge 2 months ago

GomersRevenge 2 months ago
@GomersRevenge The money is there in heaps..
Look at the figures for wealth distribution.
The 1% HAVE all the money in their bank accounts; 43% of financial wealth ++.
ie Koch's doubled their fortune last few yrs for instance.
80%, the vast majority of the population have less than 7% left between them.
Bosses took it all in tax cuts at a time of record profits.
Worker productivity rose, yet wages stagnated or fell.
Right 'libertarians' ARE AKA the banksters & corps lobby.
welcome to reality.
marsCubed 2 months ago
@marsCubed
Just maybe.
GomersRevenge 2 months ago
@GomersRevenge Total US budget 2012: $1344 billion
"Defense": $553 billion
Homeland Security: $43.2 billion
NASA: $18.2 billion
National Science Foundation: $7.8 billion.
'Nuff said.
TomFynn 2 months ago
@TomFynn Just as naive as MarsCubed your nuff said is NOT enough. Look at deficit figures and cost of living figures. I know you probably haven't thought about these relationships but after all, aren't you a "science guy"? Siting wasteful spending is hardly a defense of more wasteful spending.
GomersRevenge 2 months ago
@GomersRevenge
Total US debt: $13+ trillion.
Cut defence 50%: Debt paid off in ~13000/250=52 years.
Cut NASA+NSF 100%: Debt paid off in ~13000/26=500 years.
It's called priorities. Learn it.
TomFynn 2 months ago
@TomFynn You only want to cut defense by 50%?? That doesn't even get us back to the Bush level defense spending which was a historic record. The trouble with you is that you have no sense of proportion, history or detail.
GomersRevenge 2 months ago
@GomersRevenge Back to defense level spending? You do know that since 1962 the US defense department spending (inflation adjusted) was never below $350 billion?
But telling other they have no sense of proportion, history or detail. You are a poster boy for the Dunning-Kruger effect.

spot on, I really didn't see it that way but he is right: all those optimistic newspaper reports 'we all will be using flying cars...' have disappeared. Sure most of them were ludicrous but it is about the spirit of dreaming and reaching for the next goal.
The optimism is gone.

Stop blaming the private enterprise which feeds/clothes/houses/doctors us for the mess/debt our greedy, corrupt, incompetent Government has created.

@leejs that free cash is thrown to (very rich) CEO's.

I disagree that NASA is the only program that gives people something to "dream about tomorrow". There are many other academic programs getting the short-end of the stick. Anyone ever think that perhaps NASA years are at an end; that maybe something else should take its place?

I see science expenditures like NASA as part of national defense. He who has the best technology is the most powerful. While at the same time, we benefit from all the scientific advancements in ways we can't imagine today. Thus, as a libertarian, I think it is necessary for government to throw money at it. It sure beats wasting money killing people in the desert.
