This is phenomenal playing. Shaun Guerin's fills around 3:20 are mind blowing. All the guys are tremendously talented.
How did Shaun Guerin die? I want to find more of his music. What a shame that he's not with us. His poor father died of heart failure only a year later at only 64 years old. So sad. :-(
I wonder if you guys realize how GOOD this really is? Absolutely brilliant playing and that's from a player....Please post anything else you have on these guys....thanks!!!!
Is drummer Shaun Guerin the son of lengendary L.A. studio drummer, John Guerin? If so, then my heart goes out to the family for the loss of a father and a son at about the same time. John set the standard for playing for the song with Joni Mitchell, John Klemmer, Michael Franks, Seals and Crofts, and many others. May they both rest in peace.
OMG. Shaun, Matt and I miss you so much. No one could sing Gabriel the way you could. Please say hi to Tom Shannon for us and give him our love---we know you two are jamming wherever you are.
The first section is a little of U.K.'s "In the Dead of Night" including "Presto". There's also a tidbit from "Thirty Years" and "Time to Kill", also by U.K.
Shaun used to work with me here at Line 6. We were 2 of 3 drummers in the company. We used to talk and joke daily. I wish I would have seen signs to where Shaun was heading with his life, I would have done anything to prevent it. RIP Shaun. We miss you buddy.
very cool...as a musician (i am the percussionist for KORN), I have fond memories of all the "epic fusion bands", ELP certinaly at the forefront. what shaun is doing is amazing. singing and playing in those wacky time signatures takes incredible dexterity and concentration. i was sadend to read about his untimely death.
Nice to see some QUALITY music being played. GREAT JOB guys. I've been following a band from Boston that does this song. Mindwalk is a three piece band that does In The Dead Of Night and Presto. Only difference is that they are 11, 14 and 15 years old. Before you go and dismiss them a kids, give them a listen. They play Dream Theater, Rush, Kansas, UK among other prog rock. Good quality music and musicians are still out there.
Again...Great job on a great song guys. Keep this music going!
Btw, I'm duly impressed! Gary is astounding. His recreations illuminate how spectacular Emerson and Jobson were/are and rekindle my fascination. It's absolutely FANTASTIC to hear a worthy, hot bass player cookin' on ELP and UK. Wetton and Lake are primarily singers, in my opinion. Shaun [was] so amazing, too!!!!
All right, I posted way too much music on here. I apologize. Let's simplify the whole thing to help you to a better start. Sixteen high consistency albums, and you can be sure that every note will tell with the same integrity and musicianship as you found 35 years ago. Note that this is hardly everything that's out, but it's a great start!
Best of luck in your music hunting endeavors, and let us know what you think and discover along the way!
Looks like calamityjames and I have very similar tastes! Although I'm not sure about the Spastic Ink and Spiral Architect recomendations! I love them, but it might take someome that is just beginining to explore modern prog awhile to aquire a taste for them.
I played in a prog band with a drummer who sang lead. It requires intense discipline. ELP, UK, Genesis (early), King Crimson etc. has a small, loyal following, but for those who have prog in their blood, it's what floats their boat. Who's producing new prog? Any suggestions?
I have many suggestions, but first it would be relevant to know your position on progressive metal and R.I.O. If you're not interested in where prog has gone in those directions, then I won't recommend any of that. Also, how new? '80s, '90s, this century?
Actually, any and all. I discovered Dream Theater because my wife read an article in the paper, that some band was compared with Yes, etc. so I was blown away. Thought rap had killed instrumental excellence. Maybe composition had died. DT has some great moments, albeit metal/glam. I did receive your 11 suggestions and will follow up on them!!! THANKS!
OUT-FREAKIN’-STANDING! I love that you played Presto. I saw John Wetton’s band with the great Martin Orford from I.Q., playin’ keyboards. They played “In the Dead of Night” and even THEY skipped over the Presto section. Hats off to ya.
hamwinkie-Allan did tour with U.K. here in 1978. I saw them open up for Dimeola in L.A. Return to Forever came out and played on Al's encore. Great night. Thanks for the positive comments on my band!
Did Holdsworth tour with UK, in the states? I can't recall, or should say I recall his ansense. Great drummer here! He obviously is a Palmer fan, all the way to the kit design and setup. Great band!
Very Nice . . . except this is a'U.K.' song from the self title albun U.K. then finally into a bit of Tarkus.
Nice to see U.K. stuff being done, the self titled U.K. album in awesome, they opened for Jethro Tull during (I believe) the "A" tour. (saw them in San diego)
Scalawag-regarding the one-finger salute; it’s actually a thumbs up, congratulating the guys on making it through the U.K. Presto section in one piece. We somehow managed to “tame the beast” after running through it only a few times before. For the curious, it’s 3 bars of 7/8, 5 of 7/16, 1 of 21/16, 5 of 7/16, 1 of 39/16, 1 of 7/16 and 1 of 12/16. Then it all repeats except for the last bar which is 25/16 instead of 12/16. Industrial strength.
Lefty-While it’s true that Shaun did play drums on only ONE song in the Genesis Tribute (a double drum feature a la Phil/Chester), I think the point was that he was able to put the drums aside (which he had played all his life) and concentrate on his singing (he had only recently first picked up a mic) to improve his voice. Saw both bands many times but I preferred the ELP tribute ‘cause I preferred ELP’s aggressiveness over Gen’s more ethereal style, but both tributes were great!
(Part three) Shaun also joined a Genesis tribute band as their lead vocalist (no drumming) and his voice was much better suited to cover Peter and Phil than Lake or Wetton. If you have more footage, it would be great to re-live those old shows so please post more clips and maybe it’s time for that Return to Forever- “Romantic Warrior” tribute? This is the 30-year anniversary…
(Part two) Yeah, because of John’s distance from L.A., during the entire tenure of the band, we only got a few rehearsals in so every gig was a “Trial by Fire”. But every gig was also like a live rehearsal so we eventually got our act cleaned up and really got everything tight in later days. Shaun really improved greatly in that whole singing while pounding thing.
Comment-Part one (500 character max). Cool. I’m glad that there’s documentation of us. This would be from early ’97. Those first few gigs were really rough. Some obvious tempo issues here. Sounds like we’re trying to catch the first train out of town. Reading charts while on the job was not the brightest idea either for this kind of music.
Very Impressive! I was around for the heyday of those bands and I think you sound better than they did live! The singing was off but I’m sure it’s hard to play drums at the same time. I’m more interested in the music than the vocals anyway. I see the show was at Paladino’s. I’ve lived in L.A. for all of my 57 years and I’m a huge Progressive Rock fan so I don’t know how I missed your concerts. My bad. P.S.-did the keyboard player flip somebody off after the fast U.K. part?
Hahaha.. no, he was just beating himself up. He tends to do that; as a perfectionist, he demands to see music this important performed flawlessly to the last note. He transcribed all the parts to the entire songs, designed this medley, and taught the other two players their parts note by note. Since he himself is responsible for the lion's share of the performance, it's even more imperative to him that he nail the entire concert and make sure he does not fail to do these songs justice.
You guys KICK ASS! I’m familiar with all the music from both those bands and it’s good to see that you didn’t shy away from the harder stuff in their repertoire. Mixing the songs up like that was a good twist. Kept me guessin’ what was comin’ next!! Sorry to hear about your drummer.
Thanks, TrojanFan. These guys didn't even know they were being recorded at the time, so this was all a great surprise. We hope to have more footage of them up soon.
