  • I was at Ayr the day he was killed, sad, he did seem likely to go on become one of the greatest.

  • Western Rose was Fred Rimell's banker bet for the meeting. Golden Cygnet wiped the floor with the opposition. Niall Madden had the proverbial double handful. Without doubt the best Hurler I saw in over 50 years of NH Racing in Ireland and the UK

Had he survived he would be a household name by now.

  • Legend of a horse .who was toying with more experience rivals when he fell at Ayr.

    One of the best.

  • What a machine!!

  • Without doubt the most talented hurdler seen on the track, was running all over Night Nurse and co. in the Scottish Champion. Alas he never got to show his full potential, Tragic.

  • thats the difference between a good amateur and brian oconnel lol had him in the perfect position, handy on the inside asked him to go a bit coming out of the bend and the race was over.

  • There's little doubt that Golden Cygnet had enormous potential. But for the tragedy that befell him in the Scottish Champion Hurdle would probably have run up a sequence in the Champion Hurdle. What an untapped talent he was!

  • i agree with you ,what a shame that we never got to see what a champion he could have been both over hurdles and fences

  • Yes,seattlerob7, who knows what he might have achieved. Such a terrible end to a truly magnificent horse.

  • On a par with Persian War, Night Nurse, Istabraq and Sir Ken, but Golden Cygnet ,had he lived, might have been greater than any of them.

  • Stunning performance by one of the very best.

It was so sad that fate was to deal him such a cruel & wicked blow. His performance before his tragic fall at the last in the Scottish Champion showed he was the real deal mixing & dishing it out to some of the best hurdlers of all time.

    A truly wicked loss...so unfair.

  • You do indeed begin to wonder how many Champion Hurdles he might have won ...

  • So true... and so sad that we will never know.

  • i've just read about this horse its great to see the footage to back it up
