I don't understand why people are complaining it wasn't a full frame, personally when I'm shooting sports or wildlife etc anything that gives me more reach the better ... I use a 1.3 crop camera body and believe me there's many occasions I wish it was more !
@08CJ11 depends on what you're doing. If you're doing more studio work or landscapes, I'd go with the 5D (Mark II if that's what you're talking about). But if that's not the specific thing you're doing and you're doing things like sports shooting or a lot of low light shooting, the 1DmkIV takes the cake :)
@08CJ11 see i still have my 50d .. i bought the 5d mark II for the full frame but yeah the 7d has way better focusing and more FPS .. so with the 1d you get the best of both worlds ... now i'm wishing i'd just ponied up the money for the 1D Mark IV
@InFrameProduction True a full frame would HAVE been nicer. Though it's APS-H which is halfway there compared to the other cropped sensors... It's 1.3x instead of 1.6x. If this 1d mkiv had a full frame sensor and a bit better noise performance it could stand up against the Nikon D3S. Too bad it isn't which gives Nikon the advantage... I'm a Canon fanboy T.T lol
@Rtizt i do believe this distance concerning what is semi pro and expert is smaller now. d7000 is all we need. go to... freedslr . cong change cong with com and try to get a way to bring home a Brand New Nikon D7000
Well Jacob what we've done is we've peeled off the Mark III label and put on a Mark IV label. We didn't want to confuse the Mark III people. But now it's a Mark IV!
@c0LdPlayR0cKs Idiot. This is a pro camera. Needs weather sealing. You can't get that with a built in flash. I bet you are abot 16 and live with your mummy!
@MrJonlake You're an idiot. What the fuck does abot mean? I bet you are 30 and have no life.Weather sealing? i don't think you are going to keep this camera in the rain for 20 minutes.
@c0LdPlayR0cKs not true there are pro photographers shooting sports events that do just leave their cameras out in the rain when shooting for much longer that 20 minutes.
I also LOVE this camera isn't full frame. I've had 1D cameras for years, and when I used my friends nikon d3 12mp camera, which is full frame, his 400 f2.8 looked almost exactly the same as my 300mm f2.8 (only 10mm off with the 1.3x push).
If you shoot full frame, get ready to spend $4000 MORE on a 400 f2.8 vs getting a 300 f2.8.
1.3x crop is exactly between the crops of the 10/20/30/40/50/7D cameras and full frame. Excellent 'push' level.
this makes me excited to see that the mk IV isn't full frame. I think this means Canon is dividing the market for the specific needs of the photographer.... I almost wonder if we'll be seeing a medium format digital camera from canon sometime soon....here's hoping!
well... if you know cameras then you'd know magapixels aren't everything. If fact; on an APS censor you really don't want to be going much above that. the canon 21mp cameras are full frame... so they can fit that many pixels on them.
Even Sony has 24mp? Duhh, Nikon uses Sony's 24mp sensor. Read up before you speak.
If you do the math, 10x16mp the 1d4 is processing 160 megapixels per second. What camera can do that? ZERO! It's the fastest camera on the market. 160MP/sec is the HIGHEST res 'per second' camera in the world.
Dosent the Sony HD Cam I think the F-23 or 35 do 440 MP/sec.And thats at 1080p only.Except that it does it in 4:4:4.But yeah the manufacturers are finally getting there. We cinematographers need big sensors to control focus manually.Sony,Nikon,Canon,Panasonic.Give us cameras that are DSLR's and Movie in one.
I'd personally like a dockable harddrive with say 500 gigs of memory a HD 7-9 inch LED screen and follow focus and rails.A pro rig that would see me through any job.

Maybe with Zeiss Lenses this camera will rule over Nikon D3...Both cameras are really good, but, Canon lenses are often too soft. I'm a Canon user, like them, they are much more user friendly. Movie recording, never use it in my 5D Mark II, if i want to shot movies, i'll buy the Canon HF200. Movie on SLR...never liked to heat my sensor a lot!
yup the Canon rep does SUCK. what sucks even more are the dilettantes who feel the need to argue how "Canon is better than Nikon" [or vice versa]. Arguing over paint brushes is IDIOTIC--IT'S WHAT YOU DO WITH THEM. GET A CLUE.
cameras are just a machine no different than your fridge or microwave or tv they still need us to operate, don't let it rule you coz if you do you gonna end up obsessed with the camera or even end up marrying your camera.
Well first of the price, new technology, MP count, HD video, over 50 various lenses. A wealth of different electromics from copiers to faxes, cam corders, pro video cams, digital cam etc. Your question answered.
What does all that have to do with getting good images? MP count is only useful if you crop a lot or need big prints... HD video is not needed by people who take pictures. New technology? The new technology can't still defy physics...the nikon's sensor will always produce better images in low light because of 12mp and full frame, vs canons 16mp and 1.3 x crop sensor.
I guess in your oppinion of MP count the DX3 is just a big waste of money huh??? What about the digital Hasselblads out their is that a waste? Thoses cameras are meant to record extreemly fine detail. I currently use a 5D Mark II and it serves me quite well. As for your sharpness issues with Canon glass, I think you need glasses.
Yea in my opinon the D3X is a waste and so is hasselblad when it comes to shooting in low light, which is what most wedding photographers are concerned with for times when u are in a low light church and flash isn't allowed.
And the sharpness issue is true, I have tried both 70-200 2.8 lenses in controlled tests and the canon's was SOFT at 2.8 while nikon was SHARP. Google canon 70-200 soft at 2.8 and you will see many tests proving this.
That is total BS I own the 70-200 EF lens it is very sharp. If you base sharpness on google searches and a computor monitor that is not the way to judge a lens. Bet if I said the new macro lens from canon is sharper then the Nikon version you'd dispute that as well. The only decent cameras apart from the DX# in Nikons line up are the D300 and the D700. The whole D3 series is nothing but JUNK. I've Been with Canon for over 30 years. Ive never liked Nikon and will never purchase their products.
I based sharpness on having both products at the same time under the same conditions and same settings. There was a significant difference in sharpness. Even all canon users know when viewed at 100% the 70-200 2.8 is soft. Canon has some primes that are sharper and i'll give them credit for that, but in terms of the 70-200 canon sucks. If u have only owned the canon version and nikon version, then u have no basis to compare it. D700 and D3 are same thing in different bodies pretty much...
I agree with you and partially what the other kid said. MPs are very usefull when you need larger prints, say billboards.. BUT its not the MPs that make the camera. Its the sensor, the size of it, if its gapless or not.. and so on.
Any lens maker can make sharp and prestine lenses.. They compete with each other all the time. There are some benifits to Zeiss and Nikkor over Canon glass. But canon makes very good lenses. Especially in the PRIMES..
Dude all the technology that put in the MArk IV was requested by the professional photographers them selves, and to tell you the truth professional photographers crop their picture a lot specially the one who works in the media a. 99% percent who use this camera are the media, based in sports, wildlife, and the paparazzi's. To tell you the truth media photographers don't care 102,400 ISO coz they don't use their camera in total darkness, who shoots in total darkness?. Idiots do.
102,400 iso is useless and no one should use it...but wedding photographers would like to have a useable 3200 -12,800 range for low light churches where flash isn't allowed. In that situation the mark iv failes, where as the D3S will work perfectly.
Also if you search around the new AF system which first showed up on the 7D has many issues, I'm wondering if that will be the case with the 1d mk iv also... just type in "canon 7d Af issues" on google.
I love Canon actually, ilove ther cameras that cant focus, the noisy images they give, high mp, ASP-H sensor, short battery life, not so intuitive controls... I can care less any of this, my canon is fine and produce superb pictures day in day out. Sure nikon is better or canon are superb but at the end of the day the photographer is still the one making great pictures not the camera.
i agree...the photographer makes the pictures, but why not get gear that makes your job as a photographer easier?? Why not invest in gear that will let you focus easier, give you better quality and cleaner images in low light? And give you better battery life...
True you can get superb pics with any camera if you are skilled, but if picking a system get the one that has what photographers will need most.
What benefits does canon have over nikon? Besides having a few better primes and higher MP in their boides.. The higher MP isn't a benefit to most photographers out there..because even 12 mp is more than enough. So that just leaves the few good primes canon has as the only benefit.
Nikon will always have better glass... Canon glass sucks. Even Carl Zeiz has better glass. I am very impressed with olympus with there optics, some of there glass is quite impressive.
The F stop don't mean crap if your lens is cheap, and the auto focus is crap.
And yes 12MP is enough. Unless you photograph for bill boards alot and need the extra mp's for picky customers. lol
Its a rather big saying that Canon's glass sucks. Both have very fine optics. Yes, Nikon may have the upper hand in sharpness, but you also pay more for that.
Me, as a Canon user, never been dissatisfied with my glass. Why not? I don't pixelpeep a lot and the pictures are sharp as heck whenever I take them.
And, between you and me, Zeiss lenses are better than Canon's, yes, but also better than Nikons, don't worry about that.
Nikon's are way sharper...try the 70-200 at 2.8 from nikon and canon, and look at 100% and you will see nikons is SHARP where as canon's is soft... true that is pixel peeping but even when looked at normal resolution nikon's looks sharper. You pay more by a little bit...but so what? The image quality is worth the 100 or 200 more u pay for a lens.
Oh I won't tell you thats not true in any way. But there are more factors in buying a certain brand over the other.
I never tried any high end Nikon lenses, so I cannot compare with that. I did use a few Nikon bodies (D200 was the best of those though). It are fine bodies, but then the ergonomics don't suit me.
Don't take me wrong, I'm not bashing Nikon in any way, and perhaps I might swap from Canon to Nikon once, but for now I am highly satisfied with Canon and their lens collection.
I agree with mahamza...Nikon is hands down better in every way except for maybe the video, which shouldnt be an issue if youre a photographer. The video is just an added bonusnothing most photographers would care much about.
By pure physics, the nikons high ISO performance will be significantly better due to less mp in nikon and a full frame sensor. The battery life is better, the build quality of the D3 is proven to better than the 1D. The controls are more intuitive in my opinion on the Nikons. The zoom lenses on canon are no match for nikons pro zooms. Ive tested the 5d mk ii and the 1d mk iii with the D700 and D3. In all cases nikon produced cleaner and better results.
The AF system? Dont get me started, Canon is TERRIBLE compared to Nikon.
Seems like Canon is more concerned with making their cameras appear good on paper and taking the lead in megapixels and high tech features, whereas nikon provides what photographers really needHigh iso performance, battery life, build quality, and the ability to get in focus pictures!
Yes, they usually score better with their pro zooms, but Canon got the best primes. Then again it's all about personal preferences. I love Nikon grain signature, but hate the colors for most uses.
I don't understand why people are complaining it wasn't a full frame, personally when I'm shooting sports or wildlife etc anything that gives me more reach the better ... I use a 1.3 crop camera body and believe me there's many occasions I wish it was more !

Why? The D3 can be DX or FX. I think the ability to have both is important. Limiting to only one or the other is kind of pointless.

Whatdigitalcamera, great preview as alaways.

Nice Camera, but I m more of a Ds fan.
Any news on when Canon might launch that?
Plus i also heard that the old 45 point autofocus was flawed.
Did WDC see any significant changes?
