Both shortfin and longfin mako sharks are listed as vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN. Both exhibit decreasing population trends as well. Sharks generally require many years to reach maturity and thus they should not be eaten.
The oceans are dying. There are many problems that are killing our seas. Pollution, habitat destruction and overfishing all take their toll. But one thing is certain and proven time and time again: killing sharks destroys ecosystems. If sharks die out, we die too!
shark and swordfish are the foods with highest methylmercury content - mean value is about 1000 mcg / 100g, but it go be as high as 4500 mcg or more per 100g.
The daily exposure that is considered not to cause appreciable health effects in most of the population is about 0.1mcg per kg of body weight - that is about 7.5mcg for a person who weighs 75kg, (about 2700mcg annually). Could you do a personal experiment on yourself showing how much shark you have to get mercury induced psychosis?
mako shark is very good. i did a video myself on eating it at McCormick and Schmick's Restaurant. It does taste a bit like Swordfish and is a nice thick meat for a fish.... it was good !
