Poopdeck Pappy was used best by the Fleischers,as in this cartoon.
Although I must admit that a few of the KFS TV cartoons used plots adapted directly from the 1930s comic strip stories.Mystery Melody comes to mind-and the KFS version of how Popeye found his long-lost Pappy, which had more dialouge from the comics than even Fleischer's Goonland.
Pappy was created in the comic strip because Popeye had become so popular he was being forced by the news syndicates to set a good example - Pappy became the rude, uncouth guy Popeye had been!
@Superedit Seriously, if he's 99 years old and still a 'youth', then I wanna know how the hell he's living. I want to live that long and still party! :p
I wish there was a Popeye cartoon where Pappy turns 100.

The black and white "early" Popeye shorts are far superior to the color versions that were to come along...

After spending 40 years in Goon island you can't blame Pappy for wanting to party a "little" bit.
