Yes, this is a diesel hammer, but your description of its operation is not entirely correct. The ram itself is the piston. Combustion pressure drives it upward. A small slot in the side of the cylinder provides the intake air. The air is compressed as the piston falls, and the cycle restarts when the piston hits the bottom of the cylinder, transferring the energy gained by gravity upon the hammer head and driving the pile downward.
