All of you discussing the greatest, don't forget about Niño Miguel, the last great true genuine flamenco artist right after the generation of Sabicas. Just listen to his album "Diferente". Paco de Lucia could only dream of recording such an album
@sudacape Carlos Montoya was my first favourite he's great :) but those artists everyone speaks about... I mentioned Niño Miguel because he is very underrated. He was a super strong influence to the new flamenco generation of Paco de Lucia, Tomatito etc (read here goo[dot]gl/OhuDi ) but he isn't even mentioned in history articles. You can hear the influence of his buleria Vinos Y Caballos all around today :) with much respect to all the others, I deeply love roots Flamenco, and the new
Sabicas is playing a cedar top Ramirez flamenco here, a guitar which he favored for many years then he got a lester devoe spruce top which was top notch tooI I have a cedar top ramirez just like this one
Sabicas was King but I feel Paco is his successor Sabicas said exactly that. But he warned Paco not to go to far away from the roots of flamenco I think demeola and Mcglaughlin put him on a bad path before that Pacos playng wasmuch more pure
I think what people have written on these comments is very accurate for them. Sabicas is a true gypsy in his playing & writting. Paco among other players took traditional Flamenco & added to it. But this move has eventually lead them further away from tradition. Traditional Flamenco Guitar should be ingrained into a young player before he experiments in modern Flamenco. Modern playing style of flamenco is like early Rock n Roll, People who love Cole Porter & Big Bands hated it. I hate Rap.
@WestChesterMike Paco was a great player but when he got together with de miola it steered him away from the pure roots of flamenco...listen to almoraima and the esrlier albums like fabulosa guitarra.
@mrboppman1 Well, that's one way of saying the same thing I said. I think John Mclaughlin had more of an influence on Paco because he is VERY competitive. DiMeola's lack of confidence in private, is compensated for with arrogance, it was a threat to the other performers ego. I disagree with you slightly. You say, "it steered him away from the pure roots of flamenco" I say, "Paco took traditional Flamenco & added to it. this move has eventually lead them further away from tradition."
@mrboppman1 Also, I have all of Paco's albums. I, actually, had Al Dimeola play for me at a club I owned in West Chester. Gumbi Ortiz, his percussionist extraordinaire, was the strength to his hugh insecurity. Al told me at dinner that when John Mclaughlin brought Paco into the mix they thought, can this guy keep up, Then Al told me they spent the next couple of years trying to keep up with Paco. There is more to the story. That's the shortened version.
@WestChesterMike Traditional flamenco flamenco guitar WAS ingrained into Paco's playing at a very early age as his album fabulosa guitarra will attest. What I was saying Paco started out with as you said"traditional form" of playing [or as i said roots] and went somewhere else with it..I think we are in accord, a matter of semantics. By the way I love Cole Porter big bands and early rock and most of my friends liked both types of music too WE ALL HATE RAP!
@mrboppman1 I agree, we are in accord. The player I love now, & I am a little bias because I have taken lessons from him and still plan to take more, is Grisha Goryachev. He has some very interesting ideas for a young man. Received his Doctorate from New England conservatory under Elliot Fisk, (who has push himself to the limits of himself & the instrument which sounds sloppy) He is an incredibly talented &humble. I just wish he'd work more on his writing than on his technique which is perfect.
El estilo (o palo) flamenco que toca aqui es POR ALEGRIAS , estilo típico de la ciudad de Cádiz y de algúnas poblaciónes de su bahía como El Puerto de Santa María y otros lugares próximos.
@ybyainc What fucking Eddi has to do with Flamenco dude, get a life and appreciate the differences of great guitar players, Eddi is excellent in his style and he can teach Sabica Rock and Sabica can teach Eddi play Flamenco, great meastros share experiences and techniques, they do not even hate each other like you, but who wants to even share anything with you moron!
sabicas is still the greatest. paco de lucia is technically brilliant but there's somthing missing in his playing. he's all facial expressions and exotic chord shapes: but his playing leaves me cold. sorry i don't think he is or ever will match the charm' and elegance of sabicas at his best.
@6en6ible who cares what you think about Paco o Sabicas? Both are great players and there is no point in saying who you think the best is. Show more respect when you talk about these two great masters.
@6en6ible I agree, the real gypsy's are Montoya and Sabicas. These guys lived it. They are true Flaminco. Paco is more a new age fusion player. I love him with Dimeola but he need not be mentioned with Carlos Montoya and Sabicas.
@ninjajo11 I would say Nino Ricardo is right in there as one of the giants. Sabicas said Paco was his successor If you listen to his early playing it was great pure flamenco not fusion listen to fabulosa guitarra de paco de lucia tha'ts as pure as any.
@ninjajo11 carlos montoya is not in a league with sabicas or paco anyone who knows flamenco knows that ! carlos was mostly a showman and the best of Paco came before de miola when he played true flamenco the only Montoya who was considered one of the greats was Ramon Montoya
@ninjajo11 Carlos montoya was not a legendary guitarrist you don't know that? Ramon Montoya WAS and early paco was pure flamenco not new age fusion his real contribution came in the two decades before dimeola ! He was way more advanced than carlos who is not respected by flamenco guitarrists at large obviously you are not a guitarrist !You shouldn't blubber nonsense untill you have the facts straight !
@6en6ible i believe sabicas was the king, but if you listen to earlier Paco on guitarra fabulosa you'll be hearing him when he was playing true flamenco, and sabicas called him his sucessor at that time.Sabicas also cautioned Paco never to veer to far from the roots of flamenco. But when Paco got together with dimeola he did veer too far in my opinion.I still prefer his earlier albums .
@6en6ible ¡Qué manía de comparar! Sí a mí también me deja frío paco con canciones como fuente y caudal, callejón del muro, almoraima, cositas buenas, la barrosa...
For me, Sabicas is the best. What shows pretty clearly in the "modern" flamenco players is a nervous system / attention deficit problem. Paco De Lucia is great in many ways but he just doesn't have anywhere near the nervous system of Sabicas. Sabicas coaxes an almost infinite variety of sounds from the guitar, something Paco on his best day can never come close to. Paco use to play great 20 minute bulerias, but now? Sabicas is a true genuine artist not a modern "technician".
@realview101 I think there is a mistake in perspective when comparing two player like Sabicas and Paco de Lucia. Flamenco does not originate in a pure spanish classical tradition. It is the innermost expression of Kalé gitans who established themselves in sothern part of Spain. Sabicas is a spanish scholar of classical music who approaches a folk style based on iteration and repetition enriching it with the structure and elegance and grace notes but in a very "classical"-concerto perspective ->
@realview101 <- (follows) Paco de Lucia first approached the flamenco scene as a guitarist that backed cantaores, sticking with the pure folk gitan tradition of guitar player; but being spanish and deeply influenced by Sabicas (or Nino Ricardo), was able to establish for guitar a new, more preminent role in event of a flamenco performance. In a way gave more of a "concert" status to guitar playing but within the folk tradition of flamenco performance.(continues)
@realview101 So, it is in my opinion wrong to talk about "nervous system" or even "modern", relating to flamenco guitar performance. What gives "nerve" or that "infinite variety of sounds" to the guitar playing is the backing of a structurized, written, western classical tradition of musical "accademia"; it should not be regarded as epitomizing the flamenco tradition or performance. Because, on the streets, where true flamenco thrives, buleriàs should be played for more than 20 minutes.
Are u kidding ? Paco de Lucia simply learned and copied Sabicas, he told him to do more.. later he developed his own style to be real flamenco master.
@webhauser he copied Nino Ricardo in the beginning and although he was influenced by sabicas just listen to his early album guitarra fabulosa it's all Paco's material!
