It's about Mamimi's lack of faith in the world. It's sort of, "Nothing good will ever happen, so just believe in nothing," an idea she arrived at by having a bunch of crappy stuff happen to her in her life; being poor and getting picked on, not able to make friends, and finally finding someone who cares about you only to have them abandon you completely. It's really a teenage-angsty kind of thing. I think she finally (symbolically) gets over it when she leaves Mabase to become a photographer.

Mamimi is not nessacarily poor, that whole thing with the bread was just an excuse to see Naota, but of course not wanting to admit that she made up the excuse about wanting "day old bread". The father figures it out and sort of teases Naota by saying. "Is Mamimis family poor"

Mamimi isn't giving him handjobs and blowjobs...the subplot is about Mamimi not having anybody(hence why she hangs out by herself all the time) and she is also coming of age and takes her growing sexual impulses out on him in place of his brother(since he is/was her boyfriend) since he is gone to America to play baseball. She clearly isn't really interested in him sexually.

And Fooly Cooly is translated into sexual groping, kind of like 1st-2nd base and that's it.

Also, it's never really confirmed that Tasuku was her boyfriend. It's implied that she formed an attachment to him, when he saved her from the fire, but it may not have been reciprocated.

But yeah, she's just using Naota (and Canti to a lesser extent) as a fill-in for Tasuku, turning to them for "rescue," literally and metaphorically.

On the commentary of the DVDs, the creator and director said finding english VA that had the same voice as the japanese actors was very important. So they spent quite some time finding the right voices lol. I'm glad they spent they're time finding them, it's insane on how much they sound alike, the japanese and english VAs.
