Girlgroups almost always sang cover versions of other songs. It would be odd to do a girlgroup musical WITHOUT covers. As for the songs here, "My Boyfriend's Back," was covered by the Chiffons, and the rest of the covers ("Maybe," "Twist and Shout" and "Shout") were actually recorded by the Shangri Las themselves. (their "Twist and Shout" is a knockout!). And the "hip grinding," though not period-specific, is nowhere near as raunchy as the Ronettes choreography in the sixties.
If you're going to do a fictional bio on a group... and then use songs that were hits for OTHER groups... what's the point? Why not just create a different name for the group and keep it pure fiction? And if that's the case, hasn't this all been done before? The over-singing and hip-grinding are also inappropriate for the period its supposed to portray.
what i like about this demo reel is that you can see the group's talent evolve gradually. in the first scene at the high school, they're silly and uncordinated, and sing all cover versions. in the recording studio scene, they improve, and the group's distinct style starts to emerge, singing original shangri la songs. in the concert scene at the end, the singing, choreography and costumes are slick and sophisticated. all three girls are terrific!
the show is "loosely" based on the shangri las. the characters have different names, and the group in the show has three lead singers. it includes seven songs recorded by the shangri las, as well as "cover versions" of songs by other groups. the shangri las sang many cover versions of other songs, including girl group songs (as did other girl groups), some of which are included in the show ("twist and shout," "maybe," etc.) and some of which aren't ("so in love, "he cried," etc.)
