I know this is possibly the most stupid question ever, but I'm completely new to analog synths. Could I control this via midi? Or via CV? Or just via moog synths? Thanks so much!
I have a question though. I have 600 pounds for a synth. do you think it is better to buy a tetra or a nord lead rack (specially because they are polyphonic which is a feature I would love to see in moog products) or is it still better to you to buy a Slim Phatty because of its unique great analogu sound and filter..
ohh all right I thought you were saying 'sound source' as a sound source that would modulate a destination. like a since wave source would change the destination pitch of a sound. I thought how can a white noise be usefull to modulate a pitch for example.
But you meant sound source as basically 'A Sound'. You mean that there is actually no White noise Sound available in the module. Oh yes as you say.. that is a big omission
no white noise as an oscillator source? I m sorry I just don t get why this is important.why would I want an oscillator to look like a white noise? we usually use saw, square.. etc as oscilator source since it is very dinstinctive.. a white noise would like crush everything instantly wouldn t it?
Or did you mean the is no modulation possible on the white noise?
Love your reviews you re the best really. I m probably just lost here I just didn t understand what you meant..
excellent unit and a great review can be rack mounted but did not comment
on the on/off switch on back again which is becoming a issue with a lot of units which are
dual use desktop/rack .. having to use actual plug switch to turn unit on/off which is not the best way and when in multi socket ...on ...when not using other units ??
thanks, Nick. really great job. i will start digging in to your other vids, you are quite detailed and give the kind of info i am looking for. i have a novation x and am thinking of adding one of these or a DSI mopho or tetra or something. thanks again
You can also link these. Meaning for a reasonable cost you can make a two-voice, four-voice .... eight-voice synthesizer. 8-voice Moog for ...say $8k ... not really that bad. Maybe Moog / Retailers will come out with a special 'bulk buy' purchase plan. Saving me pennies .... to me the Phatty line is the new Minimoog. The Voyager is closer to the IIIC series.
I was about to go off, but just did some research after writing that first line and see the phattys have a "pot mapping" feature, enabling assignment to anything. I still think having a dedicated resonance would be WAY more handy, letting you leave the rest of the pots to their respective functions, but it'll do in a pinch I guess. Without that feature I would have immediately dismissed the phattys.
Unfortunately, the filter on this thing has nothing to do with the real Moog filter found on the Voyager or the original Minimoog. It has a very different character to it. That's not a bad thing. It's just not the typical Moog 24 db/oct ladder filter behavior. This one is much more aggressive and distorts quite easily, even without the "feedback to filter" trick. If you absolutely want that Moog filter done right, than go for a Voyager or any old Moog synths. If not, then this is ok, I guess.
Does the Taurus pedals provide much better bass? If it does why didn't they use the same electronics as the Taurus for the Phatty? Not everyone can play with their feet.
1 voice 2 VCO, LFO, VCF, VCA... nothing amazing... yeah ok there's a Moog filter ! ok ok... what else ?
Look at other analog synth conceiver. For example DSI : Tetra is a 4 voices synth for only 650 euros and, if I remember, there are more parameters to tweak. The MoPho is 1 voice but only 350 euros. Another brand is cheaper too : MFB (between 250 and 700 euros). And you'll get analog sound also.
Yes I think you definitely pay more for the brand name than for the product itself. Too bad.
Just to get it out of the way, I'm a 15 year old that's putting his piano experience to synths. So, were those drum beats coming from the Slim Phatty and then being controlled via MIDI by your Venom, or were the drums coming from the venom so that the Phatty could modify them?
@ThePandaGun haha, piano experience is equal to bass or flute experience when it comes to synths ^.^ it's an instrument more about creating sound than the technical aspects you need to perform with a piano.
anyways, to answer your question, it depends where in the video you look. Prior to 8:48, the drums are from the Venom and completely unrelated to the Moog. However, at 8:48 he demonstrates running the Venom's drum sounds modified by the Moog's filters.
With this, the monster will be complete! '59 Hammond B3 in a '36 A body (baby b) with removable original legs. Restored mechanically with 2 channel midi added to lower manual. Now the Slim phatty will be added along with mac mini running pianoteq and all played on the amazing restored hammond action! All of this in one "convenient" package. I cant freakin wait to get this project done!!
I absolutely LOVE your tutorials. They're incredibly informative, and you clearly show your knowledge of what it is you work with and love doing. Kudos!
I think the first pronunciation of 'Moog' that you used is correct! Two letter Os and then a consonant are never pronounced non-phonetically, I'm sure. If it were pronounced the second way, it would be spelled 'Mogue' or Mouge' or Mowg' to rhyme with 'rogue'.
@Ori0n1975 That Sucks man. I don't have much in the line of equipment, but I tend to get the Most out of it by working hard, & long on Experiments in Sound. You might like some of it you know. I put in an awful lot to make my music stand out, yet have much of the 60's, 70's, 80's in there mixed with Mellodrama, with emphasis on Dynamics! soundcloud com/kindle if you're interested. Interesting. I think synths by Moog are too expensive. If there are and/or there will be good apps by Moog for the iphone/ipod-touch and/or ipad, then I will be using one of those apps.
@VonCarnstein OMG AN ARP, A FEATURE THATS BEEN ON SYNTHS FOREVER!
haha ^.^ not hating on the slim phatty at all (I actually just ordered one myself), it's just silly to buy a synth for an arp ^.^ I'm guessing you were being sarcastic? no? XD
@drakeishfyre No I was not being sarcastic. I've only ever owned one moog and it did not have an arp so I like the idea of having one that does and incorporates more recent technology. Sorry if you think wanting desirable features is silly...
@myownservant I guess you forget the fact that these old synths were sold for the price of a new car back in those days. Unlike semiconductors, the electronics in a synthesizer have not become a thousand times cheaper since then. It we wanted an exact copy of a Minimoog it would still cost 3-4000 dollars. And the the vintage worshippers like you would still find a reason to complain about it.
Yeah, lets not start guessing away here. A minimoog d cost 5k todays prices. Doesnt take away the fact that it blows away anything that goes for 5k today.
An Arp odyssey cost 2k todays prices. Have you heard anything remotely close to it thats out today, let alone in the same price range?
The Andromeda, when released, was criticized for not being 'analog' enough, but when it got discontinued prices went up 50% and now people are sad about it's passing. There's this 'what have you done for me' lately attitude, and frankly it annoys me.

The sound of the voyager and voyager old school is nowhere near the sound of an old minimoog d, let alone this little phatty.
Its ridiculous that these companies cant make things that sound as good as something that was made 40 years ago.

@myownservant That Arp that sells for 2k is 30 years old. A brand new one, made with the same parts, would not cost $2000.
Oberheim just made a comeback... and they're selling their SEM for the same price as 30 years ago. Still using the same components.
What's your opinion of the Andromeda and Prophet 08? How do they compare to the old polysynths?
There are plenty of 100% analog products today, competatively priced and made by big companies and small ones.
