  • George Yeo in the 90s starting the drastic reform in the censorship board. He should be credited for suppressing the art and creation in Singapore.

  • DICK su?

  • Hokkien is like music to me coz I stayed in a Hokkien kampung during my younger days. BAN THIS, BAN THAT..BAN MY ASS.

  • Come on! Mandarin is also a dialect from Northern China! SO WHY CAN'T WE SPEAK OUR OWN DIALECT?

  • singapore tzeng hoo na kak saiii! apa pasal banned hokkien? sai lah, thats why dont choose HAKKA as prime minister! na kak saii

  • to be honest I don't get whats wrong with a movie with singlish in it. I mean the closets thing I know of in america is Ebonic and we frown down upon it but it's not banned (if so rap music would be in trouble )

  • how can dis be banned, nth rong wad, fucker lah

  • If I am willing to employ you as a maid, who stay in everyday and handle all the household chores, in return, I give you a roof over your head, clothing, and 3 meals a day; You would be luckier than most of the people living in poverty. But would you take up this offer, "stop complaining" and "be contented" because life isn't tough? OF COURSE NOT.

There is far more to life than basic needs and I applaud this movie for spreading the message!

  • I thought Alice Lim's performance had an understated beauty to it. A bit like the sweet stinging pain of a familiar scar. A bit like living in Singapore.

  • Wa lao! Nice trailer also get banned. -_- Too strict man, too strict. And I thought Malaysia was strict. Well, Singapore may be strict about stuff, but hey, they ALWAYS get something right eventually. For an island, it aint bad xD Singapore ftw!

  • i actually saw this in singapore when it first came out back in 06 or 07.. so i think it's just this specific trailer that was banned. it was pretty good. i want to show it to all my friends in England just to show them a different world

  • Most of the Singaporean doesn't appreciate what we had currently, and still asking for more, and though that we're suffering in our homeland. Actually we're just suffering in social pressure. In fact, compare to others countries, our generation are consider very lucky, everyone was taken care by government and protected by strict law. You can go for jogging in midnight at anywhere, no one will guts to touch your single hair. Welcome to Singapore

  • Banned?!!! What the hell? You can hear Hokkien, Cantonese everywhere in Singapore. Singapore is very weird one. If the show has all English, they said not Singaporean enough. But if the show add a few dialect here and there like "rojak" they banned.

  • Porn banned i can accept but why is dialect chinese language banned here in Singapore?? I am A singaporean and I totally can't accept this, this is very strange!!

  • I hope the flawed government of SG will abolish the compulsion of taking up either Malay/Mandarin/Tamil as a 2nd language. They should only make English as a compulsary language, no need to force Singaporean to learn 2nd language. No point, furthermore majority of Chinese Singaporean speaks Hokkien, not Mandarin. I even know how to speak basic Hokkien, from my Chinese collegues. & not all Indian Singaporean speaks Tamil, & not all Muslim(mostly Malay) Singaporean speaks Malay.

    SG FLAWED LAW.

  • this got Banned?!?! DAMN.... That's rediculous... What's Living in Singapore like???, I mean all I hear is banned this banned that....

  • just tell yourself to keep quiet, cos "no choice lor"...

  • i can afford to have a wife & baby that i will want that...

  • why do they banned this movie?

  • porn banned, hokkien banned, everything banned what kind of life is this huh? sad T_T

  • @tarino99 Sounds a lot like China to me.

  • @tarino99 well i liked the idea that porn is banned...i wish it was banned here in America too..young kids like from 17 to below is like watching it right now...

  • Aiyah, tzeng hoo bo xiu tong lah!! 政府没想通啦!! A bit of Hokkien also cannot.. Nowadays people all cannot speak dialect!! Where is the tradition leh??

  • Nothing wrong with picking up a bit of Hokkien. It's fun and yeah it's pretty obscure outside of Singapore, Malaysia and Fujian but it's nothing to be ashamed of

  • everywhere

    Ok la

    Paper...................However,I like that

that is beacuse they're speak English so funny

As for me,I think Singlish is better than Chinglish@@

  • Who is the government, to tell what languages you can speak? I'm pissed. I hope the Chinese would speak dialects just to piss them off.

  • totally agree=P but u dont say that to the singapore govt if ure in singapore;)

  • This is a great movie, be act a real yourself, Singlish or English can't mask yourself are being of Asia or Chinese. You r so care of how people see u, comment u, such movie telling people most point of view, culture way, lifestyle. more likely reflexing to Chinese traditional, mind set is chinese hokkien. If u were in real English people or westerners, their culture, they won't care a lot & they r be feel free and real express their own way no matter good or worst.

  • no idea what on earth ure talking about

  • Correct me if im wrong but i really remember seeing this being shown last time on FilmArt when (Arts) Central was still a channel

  • Yes, you're right. Its like late night.

  • i've found about this movie just very accidentally (thanks to Internet & online discussion forums!), and even the trailer & synpopsis itself has really 'spoken' to me. I can relate so much. as simple as that.

I am definitely for sure going to search, look, and watch it!

However, I'm living in Indonesia, do you think the DVD is also available in here?

    please advise. thanks.

  • no need la...i got special "method" of getting the film..PM me if you interested ^^

  • hey how can i get a copy of this film?

  • I've watched the movie.

    I feel you, brothers.

  • Hokkien/ Taiwanese/ Minna was the Chinese spoken during the Tang Dynasty. The language, along with Cantonese, retain lots of ancient Chinese (Han language). Check it out on wikipedia. I used to think Hokkien and Cantonese are uneducated form of Chinese. I turned out to be wrong.

  • My friend told me that Cantonese almost became the lingua franca of the Chinese instead of Mandarin. But they lost out to Mandarin because Mandarin has a few more words in their vocabulary than Cantonese did.

  • Cantonese has nine intonation and the Mandarin (Beijing Language) has four. The vote in the Mandarin got one more vote than Cantonese in the Chinese parliament. Also, many words spoken in daily lives in Cantonese and Hokkien don't exist in writing form,

  • Yes. In 2007. It's now available on DVD and on cable stations/satellite in different countries

  • I'm more interested to knw weather other people would buy the film? Considering the singlish and dialects, Jus curious o.O

  • was this movie ever in the cinemas?

  • Finalshow12: Nope, this one was never shown in cinemas. Censors wouldn't allow.

  • Actually this trailer was shown in cinemas before for a period of time. Then it was taken off and bannned.

  • SERENE CHEN... ^_^

  • Ive been to Singapore! Small country

but very nice building spacing.. even 12 million can fit.. XD

  • why doesn't she want the baby to pick up hokkien?

  • hokkien.. is not as good as other Chinese maybe.. some say hokkien is Chinese farmer language.

  • i'm just trying to understand? is it like a "broken english" per say? cause if it is can't you speak it in the streets and speak "proper chinese" in formal settings?

  • whaat??.. In Singapore.. u speak

    Singlish and Mandarin. ure educated

    Singlish Mandarin and Hokkien.. better..

    Singlish Mandarin Hokkien Tamil.. sometimes..

    Chinese hokkien speakers are regarded

    as.. not so educated.

  • because Hokkien is regarded as one of the most crude forms of Chinese langauges from china.

  • oh ok ok, it's because of the "uneducated stigma" that she doesn't want the child to speak it, correct?

i don't know the social climate of singapore, but i can say that in the caribbean they said french creole was a "dog language" and thus the language died very quickly!!! except for the french speaking islands.

please don't kill part of your "identity"

  • the chinese lady is a whore right?

  • I cunt fucking believe that this trailer was banned! What the fuck for? Fucking lame!

  • Dun ask us, ask the censors

  • Apparently the Singaporean government said it had too much Hokkien. They want films to be mainly in English, Mandarin, Bahasa, or Tamil.

  • I still don't understand why they all use "Bahasa" instead of "Malay", cus the word "Bahasa" really just means "Language" in Malay! It's so weird especially compared to the other 3 language groups. Might as well change "English" to "Language", at least that'll kinda balance it out...

  • Singapore is really close to Indonesia, which uses Bahasa Indonesia, and Malaysia, which uses Bahasa Melayu. So, when they refer to Bahasa, it usually refers to both languages (as they are very similar.)

  • I watched this when i went back for reservist.. haha! =DD

  • that China women in that movie shouldn't talk so much, Reflect on herself instead.

haven watch the movie, will find time for it.

  • ey should replay dis movie,it's v nice n oso my fav!

  • yes the show waas good. richard low as the father died from heart attck. he had won %2 milion in toto. but he had a mistress as he thought that his wife wasn't good enough. when the mistress came =with the father's baby, the first wife went into depreesion. he gave the uni boy 1000 bucks while the preganant lady only 3000 bucks. then she went to ipoh. a very good show. so emo~

  • Just caught it on arts central last night. Freaking awesome show.

  • ya but they cut out many parts from the real movie

  • yea , they cut off TOO much

  • This movie seems very interesting, and I think I'm going to listen to the majority here and buy it. PS Long live singlish, Uniquely singaporean

  • Singapore speaks good english?, My Ass! or is it Arse!?, I got alot of friends from French and they speak the worst english ever and they can't write proper english too. Come on be proud of your roots, Singlish is the way it is if we communicate among each other. Yes you can speak good english but it should be in formal or proper place to present it.

  • I hate that dialects have been suppressed, especially the Hong Kong movies dubbed into Mandarin. grr

  • Bought the DVD. was worth every dollar. Kind of annoyed i didnt watch it in the theatre. Highly recommended movie.

  • i see some funny comments here, english is important but is it so important that no one can speak their mother tongue? Would you rather see a world with one culture, one language? English is important, but dont forget, its just a tool to communicate with those from different cultures, not a tool to oblitarate ur own culture.

  • Hi a89529294, I agree with some of you points, but with many Singaporeans, English comes easier than the mother tongue. And look at history, millions have given up their original language to adopt another culture's customs over time. If we truly believed in ethnic/racial/religious harmony so much, some of us should lose the idea that "this is your culture and this is mine." Ah, the kampong days were much different I suppose. Look at the Pernakans, they sucessfully adapted Malay culture into

  • sucessfully adapted Malay culture into their original. Nowadays, some people stick to their Chinese roots so much that they're literally like China people, instead of being uniquely Chinese Singaporean, or Chinese Southeast Asian. But back to your point about English, I would not call it "just a tool to communicated with those from different cultures." N

  • yeh i agree with you. the only thing im against is the government's policy... the government should not discriminate against any culture.

  • S'pore has a dictatorial style of governance and freedoms are restricted for the sake of national stability and harmony. What is the alternative?

  • you may hate it,,,,,,, but,,,,,,,,, it works

  • i did not say I hate it!! I am saying if s'poreans want to live in a police state, then they are welcome to it. They can have a happy life and should not complain much about corruption or cronyism.

  • i like this movie^_^..i'm glad sing...didn't get the money..

  • wah like bei pai... think i'm going to rent the dvd later...

  • Last time Singapore banned dialects because they want us to focus on English and Chinese.

After a few years, they strongly encouraged us to speak English.

And look now in 2008, what has happen. Singapore younger generations cannot speak their own dialects, some DON'T EVEN KNOW their own dialect and they can't even speak fluent Chinese.

So is the government really effective in getting us to modernise? or is it just getting us to forget our roots and our culture?

  • well nowadays it is very important to speak fluent english.

  • I personally think that Singlish is acceptable when used in an appropriate time. I mean, The brits have cockney slang, the australians have their slang, american have many different kinds of slangs,,,, it's all just a matter of knowing when to switch on and off

  • We are earning respect worldwide by speaking singlish in fact.

  • hm if i'm not wrong they are trying to introduce dialects as third language in pri schs. =/

  • I'd like to watch this movie because it goes into the experience of the people who live in Singapore, normal people like me but in Singapore, I think that if more people explore other's cultures', how others in the world live, we would find out that we all have a lot in common. Five fucking stars. Disgusting their government is oppressing their own language.

  • The Government is oppressing our own language?

  • This trailer Banned meh ?

  • May your children be born without buttocks! LOL!!

    Love this movie. very s'porean

  • LIVING in singapore?

no no no... you WORK in Singapore then go off somewhere like Malaysia to LIVE.

  • Singapore Dreaming is available on DVD at most good DVD retailers in Singapore, or go to TalkingCock dotcom for links to online retailers.

In the US, it can also be seen on satellite TV on LinkTV.

  • I want to watch this movie. Lived 9 months in Singapore past year. Got to see the good and the not-so, but it was a very nice experience in overall... However, I don't know where can I get it :(

  • Most Singaporeans can speak English that is understandable to Westerners. It may not always be fully grammatical, but then neither is spoken American English or even Brit English. Tourists should have no problem, and it might even be fun to hear a different English. After all, that's a draw when you visit places like New Orleans or Yorkshire.

  • sp which is the language that you guys gotta use right now, is that english or somethign else..hopefulllllllly is english, then i can go there :Plolx

  • So Singaporeans are ashame of their root.. and hokkien is no no?? Wu-Ya-Bo? Singlish is uniquely Singapore...! BoKaXi One!! Haha

  • is there any1 who can help me learning singapore hokkien? any fluent speaker?

  • ... . singapore.. banned..... THAT?.

oh gosh. okay weird people, weird.

  • If they can ban bubble-gum, they can ban anything.

  • S'pore is d only country dat ban chewing gum. They said dat smoking is harmful 2 health, but y dun ban cigarette as well?

  • Siao ah. They should sell more cigarettes, then the govt earn more

  • yup Its like living in a book of rules

  • banned because of 1 line of dialect...

  • yes bro, i agree wif u, they feel very sick 2 hear dat, in short dat is 7 letter words; KNNBCCB, the last 2 words can b heard almost everyday! this is S'pore lifestyle!

  • does anyone know where i can watch it

  • i watched it on my way back to singapore on the plane (Singapore Airlines)

  • Wow, u're lucky

  • you can get the dvd if u in Singapore

  • k-i-a-s-u

Life is not tough. the losing part is tough.

  • The last conversation is excellent

The Chinese Mainland girl said "you think your(Singaporean) life is tough?"

To be frank, these Mainland girls have really tough lives. No one is born as a hooker...

I bless Singapore... I'll miss Singapore

  • "you think your life is tough?"

    think about it.

  • Banned??

I live in Singapore and saw the complete trailer on national TV with its Hokkien/Singlish language. Nothing was cut. That was why I was attracted to go to the cinema to watch the show. Nothing was cut !!!

  • Banned?? I think at the end of the complete trailer, the President of Singapore was quoted "it is real life, go watch it" (or something like that); I watched it during its first run last year. Good show - highly recommended.

  • This version was definitely banned by the censors. The version shown on TV was only aired after the show ended, to publicise the DVD, and had all Hokkien dialogue removed. I'm afraid you misremembered, dude.

  • so the full trailer was shown in the local cinema? I definitely saw it BEFORE the release of the show.

  • A trailer was shown in the cinema, but not this one. There were also trailers on the bus. All these trailers had all the Hokkien taken out.

  • So it could be the film itself which had all these Hokkien/Singlish dialogues. My memory is playing tricks on me then.

It is certainly one of the best crafted local film that takes cinematography seriously.... Very classy effort and I really enjoyed it.

  • Singapore Govt ban Hokkien? Because of Lee Kuan Yew rite? If not becoz he ban the govt wont ban rite?

  • 6th C, coffin LOLS

  • MAY YOUR CHILDREN BE BORN WITHOUT BUTTOCKS! LoL

  • why is the trailer banned?

  • The trailer was banned from being shown on Singapore TV and in Singapore cinemas because it contains Hokkien, a Chinese dialect.

  • Will catch the film. Great trailer!

  • On 28 Oct 2007, Singapore Dreaming became the very first Singaporean film to win the Best Asian/Middle Eastern Film Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival!

  • Congrats on getting a fortnightly column next to Sumiko Tan's as well. Such an honor could only leave other journos feeble with envy. Being next to Cheong Suk-Wai's column just don't cut the same mustard. Will this win point to eligibility for next year's Cultural Medallion? We keep our lup-cheongs crossed.

  • Forge on! My lup-cheong's still crossed for you 'til you win the Cultural Medallion. If Eric Khoo can, why not you? Unless, your wealth doesn't somehow measure up. Oh, sorry, wealth has nothing to do with it. Let me scratch head over money=power & get back to you.

  • Singapore Dreaming premieres this Sunday, 21 Oct 2007 in Taipei, and opens commercially 9 Nov in Taipei and Kaohsiung.

It also plays in Japan on 23 and 25 Oct 2007 as part of the Tokyo International Film Festival, where it is nominated for Best Asian Film.

On 28 Oct, it is the closing film at the US Asean Film Festival in Washington DC. All details at SingaporeDreamingdotcom.

  • fucker arr u tensenhabis... im a singaporean..n i love my country..

  • I'm an international student in SG,and I think SG is a wonderful country!!!

  • I'm SINGAPOREAN and i dont care what you guys but Singapore is a strong and independent country.

  • The situation is such that allowing and encouraging the use of dialects will NOT decrease the level of competency in Mandarin and English in the country's youth. we have much to gain, and nothing to lose, by relooking our outdated language policy.

  • i do think it's ludicrious that the government still limits the use of vernacular dialects in the public forum.

the next generation of Singaporeans will not be able to speak a word of dialect, and Singaporean culture will be that much poorer because of it.

  • rainingliaoz: i watched the show, and it touched on more than just cramped HDB flats. it made us question our aims in life living in Singapore, and showed the futility of many Singaporeans' religion: Materialism. I daresay that this disease/fake religion plagues all sections of Singaporean, and indeed global, society.

  • DVDs are available in Singapore at most stores. The film's now touring the various film festivals. It recently played in New York at the Asian American Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award. It's now headed to Tokyo where it's nominated for the Best Asian Film.

  • tensenhabis, have u been in singapore? if u haven't i wish you could stop your baised opinions. chances are u met some singaporeans through the net and thats what u think all singaporeans are. widen your vision through that numbskull.

  • Watch the show before jumping to conclusions! Here are reviews from people who've actually seen it:

"Funny, moving, intelligent and true. Singapore Dreaming is the best Singapore movie I've seen." - Ivan Heng

"one solid movie" - Mr. Brown

"...the best movie this little red dot has produced in a decade." - Neil Humphreys, TODAY

"The most authentic and affecting Singaporean film I've ever watched." - Alfian Sa'at

  • hmmm. not really keen on singaporean productions of that genre. feels kinda out dated. admitedly, there are singaporeans still living like that, but the trailer sure looks like its doing an over emphasis on overly done cliches of cramp cheaply furbished HDBs, uncouthed coffee shop uncles, etc.

  • Here are screening dates for SINGAPORE DREAMING in October 2007:

THE WOMEN MAKE WAVES FILM FESTIVAL IN TAIWAN

    (Closing Film)

    TOKYO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Nominated for the Best Asian/Middle Eastern Film Award

    THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION

"...Singapore Dreaming sustains, with a surprising delicacy, the anxiety of a runaway consumer culture in a way few films have." - Express, the Washington Post
