Yeah , love his thoughts at 4:15 and 6:05. I was instructed by my tournament coach ( Judo ) when tagging along with him on a protective detail ( ie bodyguard ) the first time. To adopt a similar approach if forced into an unavoidable verbal confrontation ( with an audience ).
LOL right after his first rule " Don't do anything stupid and get either of us shot":
That was 'hard'. They just don't make programs like this at the moment. Awesome show for those that never saw it....actually I could imagine Michael Caine doing the role also.
A wonderful character...what I loved about McCall was that it wasn't about anything he really did or said. It was THAT look-the look that told the villain of the piece, 'Given enough provocation, this man would absolutely kill me.' THAT is intimidation. Edeward Woodward was a terrific actor.
When i grew up i was too young to see this show, but ever since watching him on sky tv in the uk when i was 12 i kinda got hooked.
I recently managed to watch the 1-4 series, i just couldn't stop watching them so now i have watched all 88 episodes i am thinking when will i be able to rewatch these in years to come when my memory is forgetful lol
Hey thanks for putting this up. I agree Woodward was a legend and the Equalizer was a hero to me. You don't have many "heroes" in society willing to cross into vigilantism to help others so the character and idea of Robert McCall was a desired one.
I own Season 1 on DVD now I am waiting for season 2. any ideas on when it comes out?
The show was great. The premise was very satisfying. A friend indeed. The Equalizer was my hero in the eighties. The episode China Rain said it all. It showed you what the Equalizer was all about.
LOL. I had a college professor who looked like Edward Woodward did in "The Equalizer". He was roughly the same age and he even had that same "death stare" Copeland was talking about.
There was a scene with Edward Woodward on The Equalizer where he was in the Bronx and he was in a fight. All i know is that the people were watchin' him as he walked away some even rolled up there windows. He was walkin' in the middle of the street and then he turned around to look back. He was wearing a tan rain coat. Can anybody tell me what episode that was? I would like to watch that again.
I cannot remember the name of the episode...but it was the one where he was helping out a local "free clinic" and the neighborhood was overrun with a gang. He (McCall) did not even use a gun in the final "battle"...that was a very powerful ending as well....you just seem him walking away, bloodied, but victorious....The Equalizer is my favorite series of all time....Mr. Woodward will be missed
I have recently been watching the first series on DVD, and that episode you asked about was about the last one I watched - I think it is called Reign of Terror, the 12th episode.
I grew up watchin' The Equalizer when i was in public school. It seemed like only yesterday that the show was on. I can't believe how fast time and the years went by. Edward Woodward may u rest in peace. Watchin' your show as i get older will keep your memory alive. God bless.
Sadly another great actor has gone! .. watching him in callan in the60s when i was just a young boy for the first time and decades after in many of films and tv .. R.I.P Edward
6:29 that scene is one of my favorites from McCall... When he stalks braxton, (the NYC cop) drugs him with a dart gun and says... "Do you see how easy that was braxton"? ... How does it feel to be dead?"
That lady cop was in the soprano`s, she played fbi agent/ handler for christophers girlfriend. Equalizer is just brilliant show, pity can`t get any more on dvd except series 1.
i remember this documentry when it came out. Grant Mitchel, Fitz, and Tony Sopprano were also in that top ten list. I think Robert Mcall was made number 1, because Edward Woodward was such a convincing actor. Id love to see that episode where Mcall confronts that guy who dragged him down to his level.
they never once called him the equalizer again after the pilot. Just mccall was enough my favourite episodes were when he faced his fathers killer and any episode involving manon. The look on his face as he rests while his daughters kidnappers are driving away knowing theres a car bomb inside
In the first series episode, Breakpoint, McCall gives away a dead friends daughter at her wedding and says to her, 'If I had a daughter...'. Only his son is mentioned in the first series. What's the backstory for this Yvette?
As for mention of The Equalizer, it's used in McCall's presence by the police lieutenant in the episode, Unnatural Causes. He says something like, 'If my boss turns up and finds the Equalizer here...'
at 5:03, McCall is beating on some judo guy. they're fighting in front of a huge mural of a Japanese dude. does anyone know the name of the Japanese dude, or the name of the picture?
If you've done something naughty, and see a maroon Jaguar XJ with a grey-haired man behind the wheel come screeching around the corner, it's time to start running..........
I remember watching 'The Equalizer' with my father in the 80's when I was in high school. Thanks so much for posting and bringing back memories of a happier time.
it wasn't the fact that he was hard that i liked mccall, it was the fact he was like a human god who knew everything and knew what was going to happen and what to do.
it's something that people see, who are powerless in their lives, who fantasise about becomming like him.
Just a heads-up folks, finally The Equalizer Season One is to be released on R1/R2 DVD in Feb 2008. If this clip has whetted your appetite, make sure you pre-order now!
Thanks so much for this!! This was my favorite show of the 80s too. I have them on VHS--but poor copies from A&E's way-edited broadcast. Thank God it's finally coming out on DVD!!! Counting down 'til February...
I interviewed Edward Woodward at the launch of CI5 - The New Professionals and found him to be the most normal, down-to-earth guy. It was like talking to your dad. He told me how much he loved doing the Equalizer but it did literally almost kill him from the hard work schedule and he was relieved when it ended for his health's sake.
Edward Woodward lived in my part of the world in the early 1990's. I made a vid of him opening the local carnival. I asked him a question and I got an anecdote re Sir Lawrence Olivier. Edward comes across as a really nice guy, completely unpretentious. See my vid.
The theme music for The Equalizer was created by Stewart Copeland, (formerly the drummer for The Police), and it was available on cassete in the 1990's.
