is it just me, or 1:28 onwards is almost a quote from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin opera (Tatiana's letter scene)??? great sonata, gonna learn it soon.
I agree with paulprocopolis. This recording was made by Josef Suk and Jan Panenka, and, in my humble opinion, it´s probably the best enregistrement from this work, passionate and amazing. Thank you for post it, rvt!
I also have this recording, although I've never had the CD or case so don't have any information about it. Trying to figure out the performer has been bugging me for years! It's the best recording out there of a great sonata.
Love this piece...sounds like a French or exotic vibrato but I am not good at stuff like this..somebody not tremendously strict about following rules of technique...
Distinguished performance for a music plenty of elegance and mistery. Poulenc is not just a composer but a dandy that composes. Thanks a million for sharing.
I think that's why I like it and even at that speed it's very crisp. It has direction - this one, while clean, doesn't feel like it's going anywhere. Nice to hear another recording though - It's one of my favorite sonatas and it doesn't get played nearly enough. Do you have any good recordings of the Saint-Saens?

Such an Isaac Stern sound - powerful tone - the way the chords are played, the shifts, the vibrato - my odd are on him

No this can only be ONE violinist: this must be Ginette Neveu! (that special fiery tone. Noone else can produce it.)

At first I thought George Enesco. But then I thought his pupil Yehudi Menuhin! (early recording.) Am I right?
