  • @iatenorio Actually, karat value IS Au %, or rather it is easily convertible to a % value. Simply divide the karat value of an item by 24 to get the fractional amount of gold in the item compared to the total weight of the item. For instance: 14k gold is 14 divided by 24, or .583 (58.3%) gold. This display setting is configurable in the device and is shown as Karat value instead of raw percentage solely for the customer's convenience AND protection.

  • It would be better if it showed the Au content in percentage values as well. This protects both buyers and sellers.

  • How does the spectrometer do when it comes to plated material?

  • @950330aa

Sorry for the slow response. Items are tested at several locations on the body of the item. Significant variations in the results at different spots and from different angles might suggest inconsistencies in the metal that could be due to plating. Items suspected of being plated still have to be filed and retested as they would with other testing methods, but for the majority of items spectrometer testing is far less invasive. Good judgment is still required by the jeweler though.

  • What model tester is that and approx how much do they cost?

  • @steelhorses2004 did you get a cost

  • @mitch99110 no
