thanks so much for uploading this, so many fond memories of watching LWT as a small boy round at my Grandads house on his big colour telly (all 3 channels of it lol) when you could watch all sport on TV at home for FREE, not haveing to buy a TV licenese and still pay through the nose for the privalege like today!
Greg Dyke killed British wrestling. He cancelled it. If people blame Daddy it's because he wasn't a technician and a lot of people resent that. It was the same act for years and naturally, a lot of people got bored. Still, wrestling managed to pull the numbers. The things that ultimately killed British wrestling were it was stuck in the 50s and the in-ring death of Mal Kirk, which Daddy never forgive himself for. Daddy's appearances became less regular and its TV show was cancelled a year later.
Big Daddy was an aweful wrestler, quite possibly the worlds worst, but as far as a character goes he got British wrestling more exposure than it had ever had or ever had since, he deffinately put it on the map dispite how good he was or wasn't
But, Wrestling was alot more popular then as you can see and if you watch any Wrestling from the WOS era the crowds are greater then almost every british promotion today. Can't blame all of it on Big Daddy, lol.
I used to go watch Big Daddy 'wrestle' at the local Hippodrome in my home town when i was a kid. I saw a group of children gather to ask him for his autograph and he turned, raised the back of his hand to them and told them all to 'p*ss off and leave me alone'. I was about 10 years old at that time and I lost respect for him following that.
I was also there the night when Big Daddy was wrestling King Kong Kirk in 1987 and Kirk died in the ring.
This posting brought back many memorys i remember watching this when big daddy was on.I saw the big man 3 times at the kelvin hall in glasgow and he was brill
probably do crap for buyrates as i don't think anyone in the USA really knew who big daddy was
and no one in The uk knew who sammartio was. Andre in his prime may of been ok...i don't think daddy and bruno would have a good match thier style wouldn't clash well.
i own a boxing bag and the attire big daddy used to wrestle in i bought it from an auction and my god is it huge best pice of memrobilia i own thnx BD
Hi, No as far as i am aware Big Daddy never went to the States to wrestle. He was firmly a U.K. product. In fact i don't know if he even went to Europe to wrestle. You have to remember it was his brother, Max, that was the most powerful promoter in the U.K. & it was him who got Big Daddy all his bookings. I'm not sure how the Americans would have taken Big Daddy's style of wrestling!! Not very well i imagine! Thanks for your comment.
I'm from the states, but, I used to read about Big Daddy Shirley Crabtree and Giant Haystacks all the time in the wrestling magazines. I know Giant Haystacks wrestled as "Lochness" in WCW in the mid 90's,but, do you happen to know if Big Daddy ever wrestled for an American promotion?
Sorry no idea how long it was before matches were screened after they were recorded. Kent Walton took it seriously because he wanted you to think it was real. Wrestling got hardly any newspaper coverage. You have to remember only a few hundred people watched the live shows so when they were shown on TV it didn't matter that those few people knew the results. I don't think any Bookies took bets on wrestling at all. Buy 'The Wrestling', Simon Garfield's Book-It tells you all you need to know!
How long after a fight took place was it shown on TV?.Were there any live bouts?.Why was wrestling not shown on a Saturday night?.Why did Kent Walton take it so serious?.Did wrestling get much coverage in the newspapers' and seeing as the fights' were recorded why did people watch when the result was known?.Did any bookmaker accept a bet on fights' in the lower weight divisions'.Just found world of Sport annual from 1980, Kenny Dalglish and Big Daddy were the stars of the day!.
This is one of the best uploads on youtube! Thanks for the memories,i remember watching it at the time. There were so many other wrestlers that wasnt there....wonder why? Small studio i guess? :)
Yes i imagine they were limited to space but also remember it had to be a secret so i suppose the less that knew the better! Mind you, wrestlers were pretty good at keeping secrets!!!
Excellent post Looniechewnz, I've just watched all three clips with a big smile on my face!! Both This is Your Life & Wrestling were big favourites with my parents and this brings back so many good memories! Thank you very much!!!
I can assure you it is Kendo Nagasaki. He has grown his hair a bit in this video but that's him, sat with Gorgeous George! You have to remember he wrestled without the mask in the late 1970's.
Thanks for posting this. I really enjoyed it. It was strange to see Mal Kirk as a guest, as years later it was in a bout with Daddy that Kirk died. Mike Marino has also passed away. Thanks for this blast from the past
Indeed it did but it was worth it! Looking at the amount of views in such a short space of time, people still have fond memories of World Of Sport Wrestling!
Thank you for posting this looniechewnz. I missed this when it was originally broadcast in 1979. I can't believe I've finally seen it after waiting 29 years !!
