The elephant tried to scare the buffalo away, stomping the ground and throwing dirt at it. Ears are also flayed out, in a threatening mode. Only because the buffalo was too injured, did it not move.

The elephant instinctively chased off the lion. The same thing it would have done if it were in a herd. Elephant is bigger (obviously) and was claiming the area. It couldn't give too shakes about the buffalo

highstakes the buffalo is aggressive and formidable for the first 39 seconds. Then we keep losing gaps of the action in the editing. Thereafter it looks like the buffalo never takes a swipe at the lion with those dangerous horns. You may be right; for whatever reason the lion doesn't press the attack. Instead it pursues a "til death do us part" type hold until Nelly the Heffalump comes by. BTW the "compassion" notion is bunk. Nelly is displeased.

That lion is exhausted or not hungry. A seriously hunting cat goes for the jugular immediately. This lion just holds on to the prey who isn't going anywhere, probably until more of the pride arrive to share the beef.

It seems like there wasn't a pride. Maybe the lioness was an outcast. And going for the jugular is too much when you're dealing with a buffalo on your own. That can only be done when there are a few more lions to restrain the buffalo.

I think he threw sand on the ox to cool it down as it must've been exhausted. Or maybe it wanted to approach the Ox and offer help but the ox was threatening to attack, because it was under a great deal of stress and must've been agitated, and so the elephant threw sand in order to prevent the ox from charging.

It is strange that the buffalo never uses its weight advantage to trample or roll over on to the lion. The elephant and the lion are natural enemies which is why the elephant gets mad and goes after the lion. That leaves elephant and sitting buffalo. I don't think buffalos and elephants eat one another, do they? The elephant is just pissed and kicks some sand at someone smaller - that's no compassion it's disdain. Anthropomophising these events with music doesn't change anything.

OH, so it's not compassion... it's DISDAIN. That's just as ridiculous a thing to say! It looks possible to me that the elephant is trying to get the buffalo to get up and run. Elephants certainly help their own kind, as do buffalo, so I really don't think it's that much of a stretch. Compassion? I don't know. But helping... seems likely.

LOL, good comeback... But it still seems reasonable to me to think the elephant is trying to shoo the animal, and get it to its feet. Granted not the gentlest way, but then the buffalo is crazy with fear and has horns! Animals do help each other after all - it's not anthropomorphizing them to think so.

It is instinct. This sort of thing has happened before. It's simple: the elephant mistakes the buffalo for a young elephant, so protects it. It's true. This is the explanation the experts give for this sort of thing.

@Sqid101 i think that is true in part, it could be misdirected maternal instinct. whether or not the elephant mistakes the buffalo as a young elephant its maternal instincts can still come into play. There are cases of interspecies maternal instincts in wild animals. kicking the sand and flapping the ears was an attempt to get the buffalo up and moving. Humans are instinctive animals too. What the heck, I will call it compassion too at the risk of anthropomorphising it.

From an evolutionary point of view, perhaps not very much at all. So "animal" maternal instincts are just as much a form of "compassion", I suppose", as are human ones.

The biggest mistake that buffalo made was turning his back on that lioness. I have seen it myself even at home with my cats, the second one turns his/ her back on the other they use it to their advantage and attack them (whether maliciously or playfighting). I can't watch this, I know it's nature and everything but I can't stand to see an animal in pain crying out in agony. It upsets me too much.
