i looked up "What is a processor" and i watched the first video that came up but the guy really didnt explain it good enough so i went here i now my brain is 1 video smarter. thank you
Not true... A dual processor is NOT a computer that has 2 processors. And that computer doesn't have 2 processors, it has 1 processor with 2 cores. Now... there are SOME computers that have 2 processors but they are really expensive
@uDaeth he probably just said it that way so computer dummies could understand. if he said it your way people would have been like WUT?? WUT IZ A CORE?
however i see your point. he should have specified the difference, and explained what a core is, and how two cores differ form two processors.
If you have a dual core processor and if you burn a DVD, it will be slower because the PC has to encode the language, format it, and transfer the information. A quad core processor has twice as much power so it can burn a DVD faster. Playing games on a dual core may have hangups but playing games with a quad core will run smoother.
More cores doesn't necessarily means better performance. You can have many cores in a CPU, but if each core isn't efficient, then a CPU with less cores can outrun a CPU with more cores. The core's efficiency is calculated in "instructions per cycle" or IPC for short. This means, how many instructions can a CPU process in one cycle. A cycle is measured in Hertz. The better IPC you have, the more efficient your CPU.
Software is another problem, multithreading is still poorly implemented.
@ej8989 I bet you can't even count to ten! ok dumbface, the processor doesn't do multiple things at once! if you give the CPU multiple jobs the processor will do a little bit from eveything you asked for until completion, but not at the same time! only when you have multiple core you will have "multiple tasking" but even that is not multitasking as you commented in your first text. Basically the processor does things really fast so you don't notice that is not multitask that's all.
and btw, multitasking DOES exist. like when my torrent is open, music player is open, virus scanner is open, disk defragmenter is open, and web browser is open.
that's multitasking. because my computer is downloading, playing music, scanning viruses, defragmenting, and browsing at the same time.
@ej8989 "because my computer is downloading, playing music, scanning viruses, defragmenting, and browsing at the same time." idiot, no! one processor wouldn't do multitasking exactly because of the laws of physics! go to school EPIC FAIL!
@ej8989 ... that's multitasking on a human interface level. Your computer is really just switching tasks so quickly that you think it's multitasking. A CPU can only process one thread per core each cycle (1 cycle = 1 Hz).
So it looks like it's multitasking but in reality, it really isn't on an architectural level.
Stop making videos old man. You don't understand serial vs parallel computing, nor do I feel you understand the fundamental difference between a CPU and a CPU core. You're just going to confuse people.
Hey, i don't know much about computers... Can somebody answer my questions please...? If i change my dual-core processor to a quad-core processor, will my computer run faster? And will some of the things inside my computer will be gone if i change my processor?
@athensluna0052 nothing in ur comp will be gone, if u mean like files and stuff, that'll still be there. It will be faster, but it wont be very noticable
@athensluna0052 it wont delete anything on your computer, it will make your computer faster. more cores= more cycles running at once. a processor is like a cirlce with 1 mark on the edge. now think of it as spinning and there is a mark on the ground below the circle. every time the mark on the circle passes the mark on the ground, that is known as a cycle. apps, services and programs use these cycles to continue running. if u have 2 programs running, and cycles are fed to (cont'd next post)
@athensluna0052 these programs then the feed rate is halved, if u have 3 programs running the feed rate is divided by three. what this means is that the more programs u have running the more cycles have to skip the programs, and this is what we know as lag, when a cycle feed to a program is skipped to feed another program to keep it running.
@talldude123 ghz doesn't say everything the cache memory and the instruction set also says a lot about the performance.. in example a amd athlon that runs at 1.2 ghz (single core one) is faster than a intel pentium 4 cpu that runs at 2ghz (also single core)
So when my laptop tells me it's dual processor is working '@ 2.00ghz 2.00ghz', do I need a faster computer to run a programme that requires more than 2.00ghz? Basically, the 2x2.00ghz don't add together; the 2nd processor is only useful when I have both Word and Internet Explorer running?
@Andy9742 with a 3.8 ghz processor you would be able to do one task at 3.8 ghz but with a dual core 1.9, you can do two tasks at the same time, running at 1.9 ghz.
@NikeySunfire Did you not listen any further in the video? 2 processors with 2 cores is like having 4 single processors... A single processor with 2 cores is like have 2 single processors.
Everything in video is wrong .

*dual core. a dual processor would mean that you have 2 different processors on different DIMMS. a dual core is only on 1 DIMM. big difference.
