The next battlefield will be fought not because of that disputed piece of land but because of external forces which have an increasing political interest in seeing Eritrea defeated @ its present form. It is not to say that the situation will not change if the current leadership is overthrown. It is in the interest of both nation to come up with a peaceful resolution. However this may not be possible due to external influences in mapping out that region.

Eritrea has made a few blunders in the past few years that has caused it to be perceived as hostile toward the US. Besides mentioning the obvious (Kicking out the UN peacekeeping force & and limiting their movement during their tenure). Its decision to address the US as an aggressor and an enemy to Eritrea has made left those agencies that have in the past supported the guerrilla movement through unofficial channels feeling betrayed.

This is obviously due to its involvement in the Somalia peace keeping mission. The United States Government has not officially assisted the Ethiopian government with military aid or supplied them with armaments. It has however stated clearly that it will make long term commitments in seeing that Ethiopia has an ear with certain intelligence agencies as well as military personnel to address its issues with Eritrea and Somalia.

I lived and studied in Ethiopia under the state departments junior associate Program. What I have found is that both Ethiopia and Eritrea are facing some difficult economical, social, and political issues. However; Ethiopia has some serious issues in dealing with the ONLF resistance that has increased its recruiting capability with the inability of the Ethiopian government to counter their action.
