This was the place, and this was the very hill, on which the most important single battle of World War Two (The Great Patriotic War) was fought. If they had made the Rodina statue out of the blood the Russians shed here, instead of concrete, it would be even larger than it is now. This is a monument to courage, courage and utter determination.
I was hoping you would continue to approach the statue. Nevermind - there's lots of video on youtube about it to fill in further angles.
It is an astonishingly immense and somewhat frightening thing. I suppose it was calculated to strike just that intimidating pose. The shocking face looks almost like the sculptor got the inspiration from the Medusa by Caravaggio.
I think the intent was more "heroic", and designed to pay tribute to those who rallied to Volgograd's defense {"answering the Motherland's call"} -- but, you're right, it does look intimidating.
As for inspiration, the wiki article states that it was thought that Vucechic's {sp} inspiration was thought to be the Winged Victory of Samothrace, with more expansive covering . . .
thank you, good movie. the most impressive and scaring monument I know. I visited "Mamajew Kurgan" just on Google Maps :) whished you had filmed the "Pavlov House" also. did you see it?
It was called Stalingrad in the war after Stalin... but then changed to Volgagrad after the Volga River .. since Stalin was not a positive model for Russia after the war. There is a huge statue of Lenin there on the river now, too.
Well... he is dead... other than that I was only commenting on what I have been told. I could care less if he was good or bad. Im not political. Some say Putin is bad .. he has done wonders for Russia... Some say Bush is great.. Im from Texas and wont even comment on that ! I married a Russian lady.. To me , Russia is a great country ... wouldnt trade ANY of my experiences there for anything ! When I get my residency we plan to live in Russia .. NOT America... so , if you are ever in Moscow...
The problem with "Americans" is.. 99% of them think the USA is the best country in the world and they can't learn anything from any other country. It is "our way or the highway". "Those" Americans are 100% wrong. You can learn something from everyone. I like to admit I am in the "other" 1%.
sorry to inform you but sone american exchange students that I met in Russia dissed russia...I wont say that they are all that kind, but at least the ones that i met 2 different groups 2 different times..
Going there this summer!!! Just cant wait till...i was born there and a have a lot of friends left there!!! Already bought a ticket!!! Summer, come sooner!!! VOLGOGRAD I AM COMING!!!)))))))
That statue one of most impressive things I've ever seen. It is so immense and stunning. It gives me chills when I look at it. i have to see it in person before I die.
And beneath the green grass of the hill on which the statue stands, lie the bones of at least hundreds of thousands (or more) of those who died at that vast WWII battle.
There is not a prettier statue, it is ground breaking in every way. Constructed in 1967 it is a Yevgeny Vuchetich (1908-1974)design. I've been using it as inspiration for my newest painting.
Nice shooting Tex, lol please more of the Russian hotties lol
