The ABS system is mostly to stop your brakes from locking up on you. I do agree that when an ABS light is on, your brakes get weaker (had the light on in my old car) and the stopping time becomes sucky; however, I don't think the ABS light being on would have made the outcome any more different than if the full ABS system was operational. I believe it was some distraction..

ABS only keeps your wheels from locking up during a panic stop. ABS DOES NOT and NEVER will REDUCE stopping distance! It acutally makes the distance a little bit longer, but allows you to steer while braking.

ALSO...ABS has absolutely NOTHING to do with your brakes in everyday use. The ABS light only means that the system will not work properly in case of a lock up.

Not paying attention - obviously. He doesn't start braking until one second before impact. What was it this time to stop him seeing stacked traffic? Mobile phone? cd player? sat nav? alcohol? drugs?. It may sound nasty but it's the person in the car he hit that I feel sorry for. Why didn't he steer across into the clear lane? - because he wasn't looking at the road ahead until the last second.

something like this almost happened to me but it was a corner and i came around it at 140kph and there were like 20 cars standing still lol so i turn right as hard as i could and changed to the right lane but there was another car in there going like 50 kph and i again tried to avoid crashing by turning right to the grass and then hard left but i lost control and crashed my car into the car that made that traffic jam in the first place..lol
