This song has always resonated with me for some reason. For all the years that I've loved Iron & Wine, I've loved The Trapeze Swinger more than any other song. I hadn't heard it in a while until tonight, just 7 months since my boyfriend's death. It is beautiful to me on a whole different level now, but I wonder how odd it is that a song I felt such a connection to for so long didn't have a proper meaning to me until now.
This song is a perfect example of Sam Beam's ability to, in one song, break your heart and then put it back together again, even better than before. The strong sense of nostalgia in the lyrics gets me every time.
And, as others have said, I have also made it known that this will be my funeral song.
My aunt just recently passed away from cancer. I never saw her for two years since she had moved away. My cousin put a slideshow together in her memory and this song was played. This song still makes me cry. It's not goodbye it's sweet dreams. Rest in Peace Mary. xo
Man...My uncle played this song and sang it for my mom's memorial last summer. She....she'd commited suicide, and this song was perfect for her. I think everyone cried during it. I know I bawled like a baby. But I wouldn't trade it for the world.
My uncle played the guitar and sang this song at my mom's funeral. I never cry in public, but this song had me bawling like a baby. I love it,it's one of the best songs I've ever heard. Just unfortunately, it makes me sad when I listen to it. I still listen anyway, though.
Has Therapudic every listened to Iron and Wine before? I suppose their next complaint will be the track is not full enough. Pick up the first two albums and introduce yourself to this man who speaks so truthfully and beautifully, especially for this southern Virginia mountain man. Sam, your beauty will shine forever. Thank you for everything.
Easily the best thing Sam Beam has ever wrote. I envy every visual image and emotional display. I wish could experience every single detail in this song. Only then will my life will be complete. Then I would drown myself in alcohol. The End.
@SeiferAlmasy469A I absolutely agree with you, i just can't get over how incredibly moving and how deeply this song moves me. Not to mention a feeling of ease that encompasses the music and lyrics of this song.
@SeiferAlmasy469A I completely agree with you. There is just so much that can be said as to how the music and the lyrics of this song evoke such a tremendous feeling at peace with whatever maybe troubling my mind at the moment. It's such an amazing song that I just find myself replaying it over and over to experience it time and time again.
Its been several years since I first heard it and I still maintain it'll be the one at my funeral... if nothing else people will have to sit through ten minutes of music! ha, I win.

Therapudic: the music is simply there for the sake of the lyrics. This song is all about the words.

Interesting song, but not much variety. Still, beautiful in its own right.

I have told almost everyone I know, just in case I die before them, I need them to make sure this song plays at my funeral.

If I could ever find a problem with this song, it would have to be that it's too short.
