I think the first recording (House of the Rising Sun) was by Leadbelly, who recorded a whole ton of folk songs for smithsonian, many of which he did not write- he was just the first to record them.

Read the Wikipedia origins and history of both song, recordings, and the House itself. Really fascinating. Anyway this is a great rendition of 'Grace' and in the tradition of all great classics is inspired and influenced by other music and musicians. Can't seem to post Wiki address here. Just Google it.
@thejonnyrocket1 Please do your homework before posting uninformed opinions. See comment below from bubbamotown96. You need to get familiar with both songs and with this group. And no where are they calling it "theirs". Good Lord! Educate yourself.
@thejonnyrocket1 First of all, "House of the Rising Sun" was not written by, nor first performed by, The Animals. So in your words, they "ripped" this song. I believe they "ripped" Bob Dylan, who "ripped" some other folk singer, who did his own arrangement of a old traditional song. Secondly, I don't imagine they ever tried to take credit for the lyrics to "Amazing Grace". They took two traditional songs and combined them. And quite brilliantly I may add. But thanks for your informed insight.
I'm an Atheist- but damn those guys have it going on! Brilliant blend of songs. Personalty I think it modernizes the original message of the song and makes it more potent.
Awesome. I saw the PUSH Physical Theatre (out of NY) perform to this song. It was amazing. Inspirational music and dance...goosebumps. God bless these men.
@BBiebigheiser Don't really care for this but it does have a House Of the rising Sun sound to it, matter of fact I would love them to cover that song, It would be perfect.
@robsoilcan Someone should "beat" these guys over the head with a drum stick for changing a classic gospel song like this. But I guess maybe if they're blind they didn't realize they had the wrong sheet music. See my band's new Amazing Grace video for a lesson on how to properly perform this classic melody.
@number1covers Its ppl like you thats caused music to be in the horrible place it is today.I only feel sorry for the ppl that idiotically listen to you as your "band" is a pure disgrace to music.Do yourself and everybody else a favor and quit music altogether(if you can even call the shit you created music). The BBoA play it the way its suppose to be played, with soul and feeling which you obviously have none of.I only hope my message can save others from having to hear your horrid creation.
@chardy731 dude, you gotta be aware that their are many types of music that many people like, and just becuasae you don't like something dosen't make it bad, for example, i like almost all music, for example, i liten to this type of music, i listen to classical, jazz, big band, various types of rock, heavy metal, and rap/hip-hop! Like, i listen to a slow, loud, hard version of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, but just becuase you don't like hardly731's music, dosen't mean other people do.
Deliciously ironic that this is being sung to the melody of "The House of the Rising Sun" which is of course a song about a man damned to keep returning to a whorehouse - "one foot on the platform, the other on the train, I'm going back to New Orleans to wear that ball and chain."
Even with the subpar audio on this video it sounds like a very powerful performance. This must have been complete and utter bliss to have heard live. I'm jealous of everyone that was in the crowd!
Yes, it is being sung to the tune of "House of the Rising Sun"....An interesting side note, before the 20th century, it was not unusual to take a familiar melody and use it in different songs(Our national anthem is set to the tune of an old English drinking song, and it was common to use the same melody in a hymn, drinking song, etc).
Amazing Grace has always been my favorite hymn, and being a child of the 60's House of The Rising Sun was also a favorite. Who ever came up with putting them together is a genious! Truly Amazing Grace.
Whoever that was who put the two songs together is long unknown. Blues musicians often borrowed tunes they heard in church and wrote new blues lyrics to them. The Blind Boys are the first to honor that connection.
you can see well only with your heart's eyes (Blaise Pascal); call Him God, Mohammed, Javeh, or whatever, there's only One, and if you really listen to these AMAZING voices singing with the bottom of their soul you'll understand... I had the luck to see them in Zurich and to meet them after the concert.... they are really awesome, all of them, in every way! Jimmy, Rick, Ben... you really rock!!!!!
That's right, brilliant isn't it. When I first heard it several years ago I thought eh weird but the more I listened to it the more I loved it. Wow Clarence Fountain is at his best on this one.
Yes, he is blind. I saw them on KET on TV yesterday and it showed an upclose veiw on all of the band. I find it pretty amazing that he does so well on the drums.

A Jesus IS Lord, He is the one and Only Son of God. He is God made man.
How and why, because He is God, He can do Anything.

He died on the cross for our sins, He was raised up on the 3rd day.
