  • Sounded Great! if I didnt watch him sing he made me nervous. Nice Voice.

  • Love Jerusalem. And guess what? Patrice Chereau, that director spawn, can't screw up a black tie suit!

  • @windstorm1000 I attended the 1976 Ring, I confess (and have said so before) I did not get his concept, but that still doesn't mean I like it. I didn't and don't. I don't agree though, that he is without talent, I just think he's had a lot more opportunity to foist his weird ideas onto opera-going public than he merits. The best explanation for what the Centenarry Ring was attempting to do is actually written in an essay by Pierre Boulez, "Le Temps Recherche." It was published with the LPs.

  • Was für einer schöne Stimme Jerusalem hatte! Sein "wonnige" passt nicht.

  • wagnerian Carreras

  • @henrifrombarcelona Carreras' head shakes horizontally, Jerusalem's vertically.

  • @agreatgeat you re right

  • @agreatgeat Carreras eyebrows shake with the vibrato!

  • @agreatgeat And Jonas Kaufmann drools.... Who cares!!!

  • Why the hell is his head always trembling.

Looks like Parkinson. He shouldn't need that for his vibrato.

    But I like his voice.

  • Operamaniak81, listen to Robert Dean Smith. A lyric heldentenor with a gorgeous voice and rock solid technique, he is my favorite Wagnerian singer. His Tristan at the Met/HD live broadcast in March 2008 was a revelation. I think many of us fall in love with opera all over again because of cetain vioces; his voice does that for me.

  • Have you ever heard of Reiner Goldberg? Unfortunately, he is not as famous as SJ, but he is my favourite Wagnerian.

  • Yes, Reiner Goldberg is wonderful! but you can't compare him to Jerusalem! Impossible! They can't sing the same operas!

  • I'm sorry! I don't agree with you. Reiner Goldberg is FAMOUS! There are people who only know Placido Domingo (very good!) and Pavarotti (very good, only in Italian operas) .Goldberg is more lyrical than Jerusalem. They can't be compared!

  • einzigartig akut.klaus

  • amazing

  • The high notes seem so difficult for him. It sounds like all his muscles are struggling for those notes....

  • I suggest to listen to: Wagner - Siegfried - Siegfried forges Notung (1) and (2) to check out how EASY hights were to SJ :-)))

However, SJ's head shakes strongly and his voice always sounds like with croak... Sounds like oversinging, totally tired and close to ending his career - but he was singing like that for about 30 years - in hugest theaters... The conclusion is he was singing carefully and with perfect technique.

  • I agree with you, he has some difficulties with high notes, maybe because he started his career as a singer a little later than others. He was a bassoonist before. He's got strength. I think his voice is just wonderful!

  • why does his head shake?

  • cuz he is not as good as someone who's head doesn't shake

  • Well, it's not quite that simple. There are plenty of singers who don't shake but don't sound very good either.

  • ever watch Domingo shake everywhere when he sings? Massive, mate, massive.

He is singing a bit too heavy, pushing a bit, and this rep requires a lot of body underneath the sound.

  • Jerusalem was my absolute favorite Wagnerian tenor for more than 20 years. Last saw him in Tristan at Bayreuth in 1999. Magnificent artist. Had everything -- the voice, acting ability, sex appeal. Originally saw his debut at the Met as Lohengrin in 1976 which was already remarkable. Great artist. He and Waltraud Meier were the Melchior and Flagstad of my time in a manner of speaking. (very different times hehe)

  • And who's your favorite Wagnerian now? Tell us some names, please.

SJ is one of my beloved heldentenors at all - and what's remarkable his wide repertoire included roles from "young Siegfried" with very high tessitura (to b1sII6: SJ had easiness with high notes!!), Walter, Parsifal, Lohengrin, Tannhauser, but also low written Siegmunt and Tristan. I don't know if he sung Erick or Rienzi, what actually wouldn't increase huge impression he makes :-))

  • SJ sang Rienzi and Erick ! Yes!

  • @marlonbo Who is you new favorite Wagnerian Tenor? I'm just getting started in knowing opera singers and I completely love Jerusalem. Your opinion would be valuable.

  • Amazing! How old is this video? Pity he was not more widely recorded for the Wagner roles than many would have hoped.

  • Siegfried Jerusalem rocks my world.

  • Does anyone know what he is doing now? I don't think he still sings but maybe he is teaching somewhere

  • He sings the occasional Aegisth or other smaller parts, and in lied recitals (I know he does the dichterliebe)

He teaches at the Music Conservatory in Nurenburg

  • Comment removed

  • One of last true wagnerian tenors. Wonderful!

  • ditto!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I can't believe this is the same tenor I saw in Elekra this summer at Tanglewood. There is real beauty, and he is still capable of making a MIGHTY noise.

  • Did he sing Aegisth?

  • Yes, he was a little husky but overwhelming in terms of size.
