  • Thank you for taking the time to record a video in English! It was very helpful.

  • @xheidenx Your pretty welcome! Thank you! :-)

  • Thanks, I know it's difficult. Can it be made yourself you think?

  • Where do I buy AEG DIN adapters and plates like yours?

    Danke

  • @mikakrstic It´s difficult... Sometimes on ebay for example.

  • ill give ya a tenner for it dude

  • Thats a fine deck

  • That is machine is freaking awesome! For a 1992 model, it's looks like something from the early 80s.

  • Das ist ja eine historische Aufnahme. Heute herrschen Kriegsbedingungen in Libien.

  • @nohaydudas Hallo!

  • woooooooooooooow. i didnt think they still made reel to reel consoles.

  • @acedaface954 Hi there! Studer produced the modell A807 untill the year 2002. The A816 in the video is from 1992. Today nobody makes reel to reels except the company "Nagra Kudelski" from Switzerland (very expansive).

  • @technikfans sweet jesus. look how well kept it looks. it actually looks like a brand new machine.

  • four truths:

Editing tape is an art form.

    I love tape recorders.

    Your STUDER is so beautiful!

You should hear my 1979 audio work "Sad News".

  • @vecdor you know i never knew they actually had to physically cut tape to make records? my respect for djs and producers just keeps building with each passing day. well...real djs and producers i should say lol.

  • Living in Florida USA, does anyone know where can I buy AEG-DIN-(Red/Gray Bobby) hub/flange assy's (as seen in your video) for my Tascam decks? SoundFan sells them @ around $100.00 a set!

  • @amceagle1 Sometimes you will find it on ebay of course - but allways 2nd hand... Also if you by new a tape - for example from thomann here in Germany. Take a look at the website - maybe they ship to your country, too...

    thomann.de/index.html?partner_id=64860&page=de/rmg_per_528_1_4_1000m_aeg_kern.htm

  • excellent demo! thank you for the consideration putting this in english! what a tramendous amount of work for dj's like the latin rascals, little louie vega, mantronix must have put in to make the edits geez latin rascals use to dj on the weekends for 4 hours! i can't imagine the amount of edits they had to make!

  • Oh how I'd love a tape machine. Great video.

  • What a beautiful machine. great video.

  • Thank you! :-)

  • yep. great condition too. Really nice demo :-)

  • how much this machine now my friend ....nice

  • You can get it sometimes at ebay for about 2.500 - 4000 Euro.

  • think its far better to edit wave files. reel to reel's are time consuming. half hour of editing a file would take a day on this kit. its still good to learn the old ways though.

  • @markash1971 I think you`re wrong! You should see the broadcasters back in time working with these recorders! Cause of the special pre-head-cutter it´s really pretty easy and fast to cut tapes with this machine! I even would say, that experienced users are fast like you with your computer... ;-) This recorder was specially build for extrem efficient working. The tape treading path is proven since about 50 years and was originally developed by German company "Telefunken"...

  • its a good piece of kit but for for a music maker like myself its time consuming. i used to own a tascam 4 track reel to reel, and used to find it time consuming when having to rewind the tape a 100 times or when i missed the cue or made a mistake when recording. i find it much easy and faster using digital devices. your right about the pro's working fast with them. i seen it done in a few studio's

  • little louie vega used his live every fri night at heart throbs in nyc....man he was sick.

  • @technikfans I agree with you! I'm one of those that have learned to use a blade and block quickly and effectively, back when that is all there was. I've never used the A816, but I would have really appreciated the editing feature.

Awesome machine! Thanks for posting this in English.

  • then you are a lazy man

  • If only we had that thing back in the day.. ;-)

  • Unfortunaley that´s the way it is... ;-)

  • The AEG Telefunkin red-gray hub & flange pancake reels are virtually impossible to obtain here in the USA. I have my supply of NAB reels, so I purchased some "DIN Bobbys" from the AEG division in Germany who sells Magnetophon RTR supplies. My Tascam BR-20 takes the larger 11.1" pilotone size reels, (obsolete now). Nice video, at least he had the sense to mount the camera on a tripod & not "hand hold it".

  • Just one thing. How about making the sentense in English!!

  • Good idea! But therefore I would need a english radio- or TV-programm. Unfortunaley my favorite station "AFN" closed last year after our American friends left our town back into the USA...

  • Thanks for the video. I have a Scully 280-8. It was used for Bostons "More Than a feeling" and "Whole lot of love" to name only a few. It is very legendary. I will post some vids of it doing what it was meant to do...recording bands! It is very primative compared to this.

  • Just do it! I´d like to see a Scully... I have allready heard about this recorders...

  • LOL Will do. This machine is 6foot tall. It sounds great. Just listin to More than A Feeling" by Boston to hear what it sounds like.

  • Excellent video- EXCELLENT!, 5 stars, I just subscribed ... :O)

  • Thank you!

  • Hi .I want to thank you for great demonstration. How much is the machine?

  • Thank you - you´re welcome! The marketprice where in 1992 around 30.000 German marks (today it would be 15.000 Euros or about 20.000 USD). At Ebay today you have to pay about 3-4.000 Euro.

  • Thank you very much for a great demonstration. I always loved music edits and you make it easy to do with your well detailed postings.

  • much more fun and easier to see than out of a book greatly demonstrated!

  • great, thank you from Ottawa, Canada!

  • Random, also from Ottawa, learning to cut tape! Best O' luck in your endeavors!

  • very nice job !

  • Thank you for this video, you made it very clear to us how the editing was done in the good old days. Geat job!

  • I broke the reel locks (the things with springs you lock the reels in place with) from my Studer B67. Any idea how the repair or replace them?

  • Hi there! Do you mean the NAB-adapter? This is a spare part and should be easy to get...

  • No I mean the metallic part not NAB-adapter. The metallic "stick" which locks the reel broke.

  • Is it the trident screw?

  • Yes I believe it is. The one with three (tri) bumps. Those three bumps match the slots on the reels.

The base of the locking mechanism is intact so I can play reels on the tape machine but I can't lock the reels so I have to be careful the reels dont fly off.

  • Yeah ok - this is probably the trident - you can see this on my other video when I use the Revox A77 (How to create a reel-to-reel tap)... This is also a spare part. But STUDER does not support old tape recorders anymore. I do only know support companys here in Germany and Switzerland where you can order things like this. I will send you a mail with further informations!

  • Thanks a lot!! :) I have to check that video...

  • That type of recorder was in Latvijas Radio, but a bit different from in this video shown, it have reels with edges, and records can't disband so easy (magnet no offence), the button was near operating keys, and the operator are seeking stuttering and another defects, but at the moment Latvijas Radio are digitalised (they using a PC's and digital recorders)

  • Probably they used the STUDER A80 - the most sold STUDER recorder wich was introdueced in the market in the 1970s...

  • Very nice video.

    Thanks !!!

  • You´re welcome! :-)

  • What a great machine, cheers for the English demo, wish I could afford the ones you were selling on Ebay, did they ever make the A816 with a meter bridge?

  • Hello Seblington! Thanks a lot for your comment! As far as I know STUDER never built a meter bridge for the A816. I think the reason is that this feature was not really requestet from German Broadcasters at the ARD. And the A816 was the follower of the Telefunken M15 what they used bevor. By the way: i never sold a tape recorder on ebay... :-)

  • Sorry, was thinking of "Technik Antik", I have hopefully now got a Studer A820 on the way!

  • Hello I think this a brilliant video! I am making a series about the audible edits etc on some of ABBA's recordings. This video shows how it was all done, so I have posted a video link to this video. Anyone interested in my series can search for ABBA Gold Anomalies in YouTube. Thanks Technikfans!

  • Hi there! You got an interesting channel - i´ve seen some of your videos and it´s cool. By the way: Did you know that the most Abba records where made on 24-track STUDER Tape recorder model A80? Most famous artist did their records in the 70s and 80s on STUDER reel-to-reel tape recorders... Also the Beatles produced a lot of their records on STUDER J37 in the 60s. Pink Floyd for example used the A80, too!

  • Thank you for your encouraging comments, Technikfans. Is your A816 stereo or multitrack? Do you use it mainly as a playback machine, or do you make recordings on it. If so do you make use of the tape cutting facility a lot? And can we hear some of your work on YouTube?

  • Hi again! The A816 is only a 2-track stereo-recorder. STUDER developed no 8, 16 or 24-track versions of the A816. I´m using the recorder for recording music or radioprogramms like radio drama for example. But I also use it to listen to pre recorded music from records or CDs. Usually I don´t cut my tapes very often. The (splicing) tapes are relative expansive. 1000m empty tape costs about 20 Euro without a spool. This tape is on a so called "bobby" - like the tape kernel in the video.

  • Yay! I appreciate you thinking of us english-speaking n00bs! ^___^ I love these old machines.

  • He he - this recorder isn´t that kind of old... ;-) It was build in 1992 and it was the last analog developed recorder from STUDER ever... That´s the state of analog affairs, I think.

  • I like those old reel to reel recorders,i used to amuse myself with them in the 60`s to 70`s.

Amazing that nowadys with a laptop you can do the same with no repoduction loss or hiss!

i think it is more impresive using the old reel to reels, you can ---(see the sound)!! ?!

Just wondering , how good is the repoduction of your pro decks compared to the mass market ones from years ago?

  • you can't do this on a laptop or any other computer for that matter. Digital audio (and video for that matter) can get close to the original source (live analog sounds) but will always be an infinite number of points away from the original source. If you know the difference between analog (continous) and digital (discrete) this will make perfect sense.
