Van wrote it. The Shadows of Knight covered it and had the hit in the U.S. When Van lived in Boston, he performed the song and was booed because it didn't sound like the SoK record. Peter Wolf (of J Geils) grabbed the mic and told the crowd, "This man WROTE the song!"
Van always changes his songs and ad libs, the SOK cover was an imitation of Them's original so your story is kind of twisted. If Van has sang it the same as he recorded it, everyone would have recognized it whether by him or SOK. SOKs hit was because Them's was banned in the US because of risque lyrics. SOK changed them and got air play. Everyone knows the story but you.
Them's version was first put out as a B side in Europe but made the "Baby Please Don't Go" single a top hit. In the US, it was banned in much of the country because of the words "she comes to my room" SOK changed it to "she comes around here" getting air play and a big hit. Obviously they didn't measure up, they were a 1 hit wonder and Van Morrison is a LEGEND!
East of the Mississippi people heard the version from the Shadows of Night. West of the Mississippi people heard Them's version. It got strange airplay roughly by that line.
This song was written for Brian Rossi and "The Wheels" in northern Ireland by Van Morrison,who later recorded it with "Them"..Shadows of Knight made it famous in the USA in the "60s"
