They are good and bad parents in every race and culture. Not all white parents are submissive and allow their kids to run scotch free. Not all Asian parents are emotionally abusive. I had a Chinese friend who was very slow at school, I think her little brother was slow. They had learning difficulties. One of them has a degree in art, the other has a degree in designs.
I'll make an example. If I want my daughter to be a ballerina, am I being reasonable and a good father to force her to do it if she's not good at ballet and is unhappy with it? Or demand my son be a star athlete if that's not what he wants to be and he's not good at sports?

My parents are strict and we're an education first kind of family and respect is a BIG deal. When I was younger I hated them for it, now I'm only 18 and considering how most of my friends with very Western parents turned out, I appreciate everything they did and I'll definitely bring my own children up the same way. People are too quick to judge other cultures they don't know about.

Asian parents = good at pushing their kids to excel academicly. Bad at emotional support. White parents = good at allowing their kids to express themselves, bad at setting limits on their kids freedom.
Bottom line is there is much to be learn from both cultures. Parenting is never easy.
I personally thinks that having parents who give too much freedom is also giving the child too much mental pressure. Ppl with strict parents, i think, are lucky cause they knows the parents care and know what they want(like knowing when to rebel or knowing what they hate, etc..) I am Chinese, immigrated from China, and have been living in the U.S. for 20 years. my wife and I have two beautiful kids born in the U.S. I agree with your observation on Asian parents. Most of them don't change at all after coming to the U.S. It's so hard to be their kids. I understand that and have done my part to be a good dad to my kids.
Asian parents don't care about anything but good grades, great academic record, and a shining career.

But that is because deep inside they feel that academic success will give them a better future and hence a happy life. Obviously a teenager would complain if his/her parent put pressure on them to do well and kept them in check. I am Indian and hated being pushed. But now that I am in college, I thank them for instilling discipline and values in me.
I'm in college too. You have no idea what they took from me. They have no right to do that. Real parents love their children unconditionally and are accepting, not trying to live out their dreams through their kids. If they love academics so much, then they can back to school themselves. A degree doesn't mean automatic success, it's worth less in today's brink of economic collapse, where college is now more of a credentialing service to put on a resume.

Talking about american parents, most don't even pay for their kids' university fees even if the child wants to study.
I believe that Asians have more discipline than Americans because it all comes from our parents.

I pray and hope that more Asian parents will wake up before too late. They really put too much pressure on their children. They are selfish in a sense because they care more about what they want instead of what is suitable and good for their children. The second-generation Asian Americans have the most unhappy childhood because of their immigrant Asian parents. Sad!!!

Asian parents don't care about anything but good grades, great academic record, and a shining career.
To them, this is success even at the cost of their child's happiness, emotional well being, and being able to live life to its fullness without it always being about success and money. I'm losing 20 years of my life because of this shit.

If all Asians act like Americans, I don't think we will ever move up from the bottle of the race chain. It's sad to say that most Asians are working for minimum wages, and doing hard labor. Asian parents don't want their kids to have the jobs that most of them are having, because it's heartbreaking. That's why those parents are so keen to have their children working as doctors, or lawyers. This obsession might cause damages to the kids, but they only do it for greater good.

Most Asians think that without success and money, happiness will be hard to find. Why? Marriages are usually split due to financial problems. How can one stay happy in a marriage when they constantly have to worry about getting enough money to pay for the bills, despite how much a couple might love each other. Therefore, the Asian parents encourage the kids to become very successful, THEN they will be carefree to do whatever they like. It's a "work now, play later" attitude.

But no kid should ever have to miss out on some of the most important experiences in life (parties, first date, so on) from childhood to adulthood, or the only place they can go is the library, or have to be lectured nonstop about grades and school, or seen as disgraceful if they can't get the grades their parents wanted. You only get one life, live it to its fullest, live for the moment, and make every day count

Yes I agree with you on that. We should live to the fullest, but we shouldn't live carelessly either. Kids should be well-rounded, but they should also be very smart and responsible. However, being smart and responsible seems to be more important than being the popular kid at school who goes to all the parties and proms. Later in the long run, money is needed to support your own kids and put them through college. As parents, they want the best for the child.

If medical school was easy, then everyone would do it. Not everyone is equally bright or have the resources to go to med school. I don't even drink or party wild. Or depriving them of companionship, creativity, be able to grow, and enjoy life as they see fit.
But to call child abuse hotlines for this has got to be the most embarrassing and mortifying reason to do so.

But that is because deep inside they feel that academic success will give them a better future and hence a happy life. Obviously a teenager would complain if his/her parent put pressure on them to do well and kept them in check. I am Indian and hated being pushed. But now that I am in college, I thank them for instilling discipline and values in me.

I'm in college too. You have no idea what they took from me. They have no right to do that. Real parents love their children unconditionally and are accepting, not trying to live out their dreams through their kids. If they love academics so much, then they can back to school themselves. A degree doesn't mean automatic success, it's worth less in today's brink of economic collapse, where college is now more of a credentialing service to put on a resume.

Parents might go hard on their kids not because of the absence of love but because they wish to instill discipline in those years. Absolutely, a degree cannot mean success, but it sure is a stepping stone. What I agree with is, give the child the freedom of choosing the path. Talking about american parents, most don't even pay for their kids' university fees even if the child wants to study.

I believe that Asians have more discipline than Americans because it all comes from our parents.
This is because they have to keep their eyes on us all the time to make sure we're taking good care of ourselves and that we're healthy.
My parents always put me before themselves. It's just how our parents discipline us...I guess. In the end, the result is a better disciplined child - that is if they know that their mom&dad are doing it for their sakes...:)
