You do your duty as an American Soldier. Hanley saw his act and Kirby can verify. The G.I. would be awarded the Distingushed Service Cross and Silver Star, posthumously.
This is when tv had real character, not this make believe shit they watch today, in real life many many good men died for their buddies, Honor and Integrity were often shown and sacrifice. Great shows back then and they will be timeless!
The beauty of this series was that Terrible things happened to good people, and the enemy was there to kill you. period. Don't get too upset, or you won't make it home. You can almost get PTSD from watching this. My WW2 relatives all said that this was the only series that had any credibility in telling the story of the Infantry soldier. "The Gallant Men" was too Hollywood. Infantry work is tough, exhausting, disgusting, and lethal..
Read Rick Jason's autobiography, available online. Very entertaining. If he'd played his cards differently, he'd have been an iconic movie actor, he had so much going for him. Of course the best film he ever made was Orson Welles' miraculous "Fountain of Youth," a half-hour pilot for an anthology series that didn't sell but won a Peabody. Jason had one of the greatest voices ever, by the way. I much prefer watching him to Vic Morrow, although Morrow was great until he was decapitated.
I read a Vietnam War memoir years ago about this young American LT who had been assigned an infantry platoon composed of all types of men -- mostly newbies, a few veterans, cooks and mechanics f, etc., and there was no time to have them practice before they had to search a village -- may have been in our counteroffensive after Tet, where losses had been heavy. He addressed them and just said, "How many of you watched "Combat"? Bunch of hands. "Well, do it like they did it!" And it worked.
Dellie Goose, wondered where you got off to you still a grounds keeper in the nuthouse? You know you really ought to see a self-help group, one that I totally recomend is On-And-On-And-On, you're a good guy but you have really got to learn to control yourself man
i will control myself independent without being told. as well as not go in the nut house. please forgive me if you can. i will put myself on the wagon. make a full recovery from it then I'll be cured. i will control myself independent friend.
There's nothing better than the swell of the orchestra music at the end of a great Combat! episode...it's awesome! I'm a fan in my early 30's and discovered the DVD's for my mom who always talked about this show while I was growing up and how she just loved Vic Morrow. Now I am a fan, also!
Not a suicide bomber... He was a demolitions expert in the Army doing his job and gave his life to save the lives of thousands of others who otherwise would've been killed had he not blown the hillside. His love for the ancient works of art contained inside was a struggle for him, but his duty as a US Army soldier to protect the lives of his comrades prevailed.
many times in this series you would see a solider sacrifice themselves to save thier comrades I rember Chet Atkins in one episode ramming a truck into a German Half-track inorder for a supply column to get through to the front lines , the message was of course not everybody lives in the end and sometimes heroic action involves sacrifice, to save others, a very true theme and a lesson that needs even today to be taught. War stinks,
Couldn't have been better said. This is why this series is timeless in many ways. Wars may change but the people and the battles within are the same. Thank you! btw - You're referring to Claude Akins in "Nightmare on the Red Ball Run". Great episode!
@Marauder0090: Suicide bombing is just another type of warfare-it may not as honorable as you'd like, but then, war is rarely 'honorable' or even noble.
Unfortunately, the ABC Television Network credit was removed on many of the 'Combat!' closing credits when the show was re-released in syndication several years ago, though many episodes still have it, this one did not. I hope to post the original version when I get the kinks out of my system. Will also correct the low audio level. As those in the business say, "We are experiencing technical difficulties... Please stand by." Thanks!
I like the episode called "breakout

What's the point of this episode? That being a sucide bomber can be a good thing?

Exactly. He gave his life to save his buddies. Quite a different thing altogether.

Yeah, on American Life TV you can still see the WV logo at the end after the Selmur logo.

Why did they blank out the "In association with the ABC Television Network" credit?
