In these older models the civic wins but in 2012, the Mazda 3 really gives some massive competition. Plus the 10 speaker Bose sound system puts Honda's crappy 160watt system to shame!
@altima1fuga2 not true, my civic got wrecked this past month. It was totalled. I drove a manual 1997 honda civic sedan, the car got me a $5,000 check. Keep in mind it is a 1997 car (14 yrs old), it was wrecked and it had 100,000 miles. With all of my usage of the car and a 100,000 miles and wrecked I still got a 5G check for it, it would have been a few hundred more if it was not totalled. Now that is good value.
@altima1fuga2@altima1fuga2, my friend, anycar can get wrecked when it is hit by a driver running a stop sign at 60mph in a 15mph zone. Even a high end car. My point is that I got out without a scratch and got 5G's for a 14 year old car that has never had any problems except a $500 axle job last year out of the entire 14 years I have had it. I mean, I literally put gas in that car every 2 weeks when prices skyrocketed and about every 3 weeks when prices were a litlle less.
KBB just lost all of their credibility. A Corolla is fun to drive? About as fun as a Hummer! The Corolla is a legacy vehicle, not many new buyers aspire to own one.
@BlackOpsAFG yeah i said sporty... they are not sporty... at all trust me ive driven 5 of them... sporty would be a topline edition with like sports seats bigger alloys. (not sports car)
I've driven the Ford, Nissan, Toyota, Mazda and Honda, I would say Toyota is best for comfort for all passengers, Honda as the all rounder and Mazda as the most fun to drive, choose your own priorities, it's the "best car for YOU" test, as everyone has different preferences. I'd chose the Mazda because i like driving and like a car that talks to me through the wheel and chassis. I also prefer a car that is good at avoiding crashes with superior dynamics.
@guyNbluejeans because the nissan has always been better so they can cretique it harder where they were actually surprised the ford is finally managing to put something almost worth buying on the market.
@Sicknasty50 "Almost worthy"?That's funny. I bought a new 2010 S model Ford Focus a month ago and I LOVE it. It's tight, has great gauges and gets good milage and didn't cost an arm and a leg. It's a curious thing how so many folks like to talk as if American car companies are such jokes, when in fact said companies led the entire world by first creating cars. That's not to say that said companies didn't drop the ball as far as taking the market for granted but, still, it's dumb to suggest......
well ive driven the mazda3, and my gf owns the new civic, and the mazda3 is wayyy more fun to drive then the civic. cant wait to get my mazda3. but if i had the money, i would have a tough time choosing the mazda3 or the chevy cruze. the cruze is really nice inside and is very nice to drive.
Ecomomy cars are made to be affordable, and that means you shouldn't expect luxury car amenities or looks. They are made to be fuel efficient and affordable.
I've driven most of them. For a daily driver, nothing beats the Civic. Within the scope of what it's designed to do (meaning it's not fast etc. but was not meant to be) it just does everything well.
of course the american cars ( chevy and ford ) end up in last place because american cars are shit. and believe me they say the ford provides a european feeling and driving experience thats NOT TRUE
i am from europe and the last thing that car feels like, looks like or drives like is a european car. its NOTHING compared to a european ford focus.
and of course import cars come in at first place and 2nd and 3rd because they can make cars
it might be, but they asjust the suspension and steering to what american customers prefer. just as the on board used materials. they are cheaper and harder plastic because american customers over all preferred "value for money" in stead of the highest quality materials
@rickrossthebosz Beh, I'd like to argue, but maybe you're right. I've never driven either Focus, so I don't have any real idea. Now the interior is just because of incompetent engineers. Nobody actually likes sitting in a garbage can with some silver spray paint on it. But I'd just like to say that critics seem to agree that the Focus handles pretty sharply, and very often they throw the word European around.
haha your right. ive never driven the american focus either, but heard that americans have lower expectations when its about little cars. maybe the american version does drive ( a bit ) like an european. i would hope it for them
@rickrossthebosz Oh, there's no denying that. The three newest cars that I've driven were a 2010 Taurus, a 2001 Grand Prix, and A 2005 Maxima. All of them could have been steered with my flaccid wang. The steerings were all ridiculously overboosted, and thumped strangely and wallowed over every pothole. Maybe I'm just used to my Jeep, with heavy steering and a loud BANG as well as a visceral bounce over every stray pebble, but I would kill myself if I had to cruise in one of those assboxes.

Is it just me, or did the imports get more negative points than the domestic vehicles? I swear these companies that do these reviews need to realize the domestic automakers aren't shit anymore. But hey, this video is getting old and alot has changed since this video came out.
You opened your mouth too soon because both the focus and colbolt out performed cars of higher price tags. did you know the origional focus was german made and has 148 HP and for a ford thats not big. Engien size in the focus isnt very big nore is in the chevy colbolt. The Cobalt is cheap and it is stylish witch makes it very popular. The Focus has top of the line intirior and reliability witch makes it popular.
You must drive a Death trap, recalled, boring, unreliable, Rusted out Toyota.
@Lexlus42 How fast a car is probably accounts for only 10-20% of why I buy a car. And I never said the Focus and Cobalt were slow. I said American cars put too much focus on power, and not enough on the other factors. And you are on crack, or 80 years old, if you think the Cobalt is stylish. It is the most boring looking car on the road today.
1. You saying that U.S. auto makers spend more time on making there cars faster than anything else is false. Heve you seen the (Chevy runs deep) commerchials or do you even have cable were you live?
2.The Cobalt is Stylish. Considering all cars are stylish in their own way. Like a 1924 Model T or a 1999 Volkswaegn Jetta. Honestlly do you prefer the Colbalt or the Cavelier? Yeah the Cobalt might be ugly to some people but so is the new Hyundai Sonata (I own one).
The Cobalt and Focus are prime examples of how American manufacturers focus on engine size, but ignore everything else. Their styling is horrible (especially the Cobalt). Their steering systems are numb. Their interiors are ugly. Their seats are bad. And during the 00's the Focus had many quality problems. American manufacturers don't know how to win the small car market, and likely never will. The new Fiesta is the only thing that comes close, but only because it was designed in Europe.
My god I can't believe how ugly the US focus is!!! :-) The uk version looks 10 times better. And the civic too! The only cars I recognise are the mazda 3 and sort of the corolla which look similar. European cars are just so much prettier, it's kind of weird the reviewer should say it's European in both good and bad ways, most European focuses come with ESP as standard, have a nicer interior and look much better.
@pjtart Really? all Japanese cars. WHY? that's stupid.
Toyota Corolla isn't as fuel efficient as American versions and I know for a fact that the Focus is way more reliable than Honda, and the Mazda has the focus chassis anyway. So why are you so narrow minded?
Yeah screw this crap. People buy what you like if it lasts or not is mostly up to you how long its going to last anyway. pour money into it or buy another one. I JUST BOUGHT A Hyundai Sonata because i like it not because its near Lexus like interior or its gorgeous exterior. I wanted one. Simple.
i have a 2009 ford focus ses and its great, the sound system kicks ass, its faster then my friends civic, it looks great and its the same underpinnings as the european focus. its just altered in places to make it meet us crash standards. Although the steering feel isn't everybody's sup of tea. it is very hard but very direct
European????!? There is nothing european (other than the name) about the focus anymore. Why we didn't get the European platform beats me but it woulda blew away the competition. But no. Ford cheaped out and gave us this dull basic car that resembles the Cobalt. WHY???? oh WHY. What gives? Why does North America keep getting left out? Has anybody seen the Euro/Jap Civic? It's CRAZY nice. hyundai i30? no. Euro Corolla? NO! Ugh. I'm now thinking of moving.
of all the cars I like the mazda 3. The mazda 3 is fun to drive and engaging. Downside it's small. It is fun to drive which I like. Toyota and Honda to me are resting on the reputations which are slowly changing (especially toyota). Mazda and Hyndai are improving big time. have a feeling in the next 3-5 years they will be the new toyota and honda.
@davids7319Sure it may look amazing and may deliver more power than some of the others, but me personally, Im not all that into the styling of it. But tell me one thing, Honda and Toyota are both very reliable car companys that will keep their value over time and require very little maintenance. From what Ive seen in the past, Hyundia isnt. That is beginning to change though, and the resale value of their cars is starting to increase but I wouldnt take a chance on the reliability of it overtime.
i want a mazda now I'm quite suprised at ford focus not being last i've driven one and hated it i'm also suprised that chevy was last but not too suprised love toyotas but they all look the same on the inside be bold toyota change up the interior and buttoms a bit just saying
@Loverofallhorses The new Ford Focus' fall in line with Honda and Toyota, Their amazing cars, I have an 09 Focus and an 09 Civic and they both fall in line. The only thing I don't like about the Focus is the rear passanger leg room.
@sukhkickass I agree but why get a small car if your worried about carrying rear passengers? Get a Fusion or something like that. I recommend the new Sonata.
the only reason cars have high resale value is cause people want that type of car and i have driven my brothers 06 civic and my moms 09 focus and i have problems seeing the front end on the civic the focus handles and brakes better and i dont see a diffrence in acceleration between the two and the focus i think looks better in and out
Where is the Volkswagen Golf, Kia Forte, Scion XD / XB, Mitsubishi Lancer. I would like to see the tests when the 2012 Honda Civic and 2012 Ford Focus. Also the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is due to come out. I think the tests should be different. I do notice that all were sedans, hatchbacks and coupes should be included in the test. I consider the Volkswagen Jetta as a Midsize more than a compact.
I have a 2009 Nissan Sentra 2.0s.The car is not bad.It has a solid ride and very comfortable seats but there are a few major issues that everyone should know about. The first one is that the car has HUGE A pillars that are so thick that they impair your view while turning. The second issue is that the car has big C pillars that also block the your view while backing up. It's quite annoying and can cause accidents. Also the car has heavy steering which makes it very boring to drive.

@pergousongandra i got an 2006 cobalt and they are nice cars a 2.2 ecotec with an f23 getrag tranny is the best and they are the most powerful of the bunch
@pergousongandra "you have the spelling of a 3rd grader. It would be bad, but you have a the highest rated comment...probably for the spelling error" that one? ...umm well since I can't find anything wrong with it, why don't you pick it apart Mr. Calbalt...ahhaha joke!
How about the Subaru Impreza and the VW Jetta? Not a complete test in my opinion. I've owned 3 new Corollas 2 CE's and 1 Xrs I'd happily pick that over any of these, and yes I've driven all but one-the Focus, I just don't like the styling.
@coandcaiv i think elantra should be second and if this tets was just about safety hyundai should be first because none of thoes cars came with extra stability controll or traction controll some didnt come with it and some you had to pay extra for hyundai for most or all of their cars it comes standard
@sexyboi142 HAHA exactly man, I think the only reason that people don't like the exterior styling of the Honda Civic as much is because the front hood slopes down more than others and that the front hood is small. But that just adds more interior room than others because I would know because I have one. I also have a Ford Focus and that has very little back seat room.
@estidecrissdemarde Korean POS, you really know nothing about cars.....Hyundai is outperforming and outclassing Toyota in every segment where they compete each other. Read more about cars and dont stay on that stupid statement from back early 90's.
i dont get this.. you dont buy a car for comfort and luxury, you buy a car for quality and utility i mean like come on!!! toyota has the best quality and so does ford and honda.. mazda is not bad.. but like those others.. idk they should be focusing on quality and reliability.
Totally with you on this.. You cannot have segment about compact cars without adding VW in this fight.. In this category you get the only entry priced compact european car in the US market. Along with all the high stylings, standard equipement normally optional on all those compact cars, and the handling and performance of a german car for all under $20,000..
The Jetta is basically a golf/rabbit with a trunk instead of a hatch. It's been known to be europe's hot hatchback, meaning its practical and fun to drive.
This whole thing is stupid. Whatever happened to comparing cars by what's under the hood, not by whether or not the back seats fold down. Cars suck these days
In these older models the civic wins but in 2012, the Mazda 3 really gives some massive competition. Plus the 10 speaker Bose sound system puts Honda's crappy 160watt system to shame!

Toyota Corolla isn't as fuel efficient as American versions and I know for a fact that the Focus is way more reliable than Honda, and the Mazda has the focus chassis anyway. So why are you so narrow minded?
Lexlus42 1 year ago
Yeah screw this crap. People buy what you like if it lasts or not is mostly up to you how long its going to last anyway. pour money into it or buy another one. I JUST BOUGHT A Hyundai Sonata because i like it not because its near Lexus like interior or its gorgeous exterior. I wanted one. Simple.

i have a 2009 ford focus ses and its great, the sound system kicks ass, its faster then my friends civic, it looks great and its the same underpinnings as the european focus. its just altered in places to make it meet us crash standards. Although the steering feel isn't everybody's sup of tea. it is very hard but very direct
gilljames10 1 year ago
@LongLiveToyota Yes, the Cruze is replacing the Cobalt.
srcej6 1 year ago

BCCHSMD 1 year ago
@davids7319Sure it may look amazing and may deliver more power than some of the others, but me personally, Im not all that into the styling of it. But tell me one thing, Honda and Toyota are both very reliable car companys that will keep their value over time and require very little maintenance. From what Ive seen in the past, Hyundia isnt. That is beginning to change though, and the resale value of their cars is starting to increase but I wouldnt take a chance on the reliability of it overtime.
sukhkickass 1 year ago
i want a mazda now I'm quite suprised at ford focus not being last i've driven one and hated it i'm also suprised that chevy was last but not too suprised love toyotas but they all look the same on the inside be bold toyota change up the interior and buttoms a bit just saying
Loverofallhorses 1 year ago
@Loverofallhorses The new Ford Focus' fall in line with Honda and Toyota, Their amazing cars, I have an 09 Focus and an 09 Civic and they both fall in line. The only thing I don't like about the Focus is the rear passanger leg room.
sukhkickass 1 year ago
@sukhkickass I agree but why get a small car if your worried about carrying rear passengers? Get a Fusion or something like that. I recommend the new Sonata.

Best looking to worst looking: Corolla, Mazda 3, Civic, Sentra, Cobalt, Elantra, Focus with the Focus easily being the ugliest of the bunch.

the only reason cars have high resale value is cause people want that type of car and i have driven my brothers 06 civic and my moms 09 focus and i have problems seeing the front end on the civic the focus handles and brakes better and i dont see a diffrence in acceleration between the two and the focus i think looks better in and out

How about the Subaru Impreza and the VW Jetta? Not a complete test in my opinion. I've owned 3 new Corollas 2 CE's and 1 Xrs I'd happily pick that over any of these, and yes I've driven all but one-the Focus, I just don't like the styling.

3:ford focus(NICE STYLISH )
4:Mazda 3(LOT OF EQUIPMENT)
5:Nissan Sentra( POS CVT TRANNY)
6:Hyundai elantra(KOREAN POS)
7:Honda civic(I SAMPLY HATE HONDA UGLY POS HONDA GOT A GOOD FUEL ECONOMY BUT NOT FOR OIL)

coandcaiv 1 year ago
@estidecrissdemarde ok im sorry but what exactly makes any honda a POS or ugly, may ask? do you like acuras?
sexyboi142 1 year ago
@sexyboi142 HAHA exactly man, I think the only reason that people don't like the exterior styling of the Honda Civic as much is because the front hood slopes down more than others and that the front hood is small. But that just adds more interior room than others because I would know because I have one. I also have a Ford Focus and that has very little back seat room.
sukhkickass 1 year ago
@sukhkickass yea the civic is all around, the best small car out there.
sexyboi142 1 year ago
@estidecrissdemarde Korean POS, you really know nothing about cars.....Hyundai is outperforming and outclassing Toyota in every segment where they compete each other. Read more about cars and dont stay on that stupid statement from back early 90's.

the corolla is the true hands down
NORTHSIDE92 1 year ago
i dont get this.. you dont buy a car for comfort and luxury, you buy a car for quality and utility i mean like come on!!! toyota has the best quality and so does ford and honda.. mazda is not bad.. but like those others.. idk they should be focusing on quality and reliability.

where is VW? it would own all of them.. oh how about Impreza2.5i? its AWD makes it safest all year round.
NoxNoctisUmbra 1 year ago
@NoxNoctisUmbra
Totally with you on this.. You cannot have segment about compact cars without adding VW in this fight.. In this category you get the only entry priced compact european car in the US market. Along with all the high stylings, standard equipement normally optional on all those compact cars, and the handling and performance of a german car for all under $20,000..

No matter what they say the Honda Civic is the ugliest car made.
Hotrodrogers91 1 year ago
The best are the Elantra, Civic, and Sentra.
valenzuelatomas1989 1 year ago
the Sentra is probably one of the better Nissan's built (not comparing to the 300zx 350z or 370).
i like the interior of the Elantra the best, but its not so fun to drive.
th newest Mazda3's are ugly, but the one in this video looked really nice, but i wouldn't buy it because its small.
Civic i think is only good for the price I just don't like anything about it.
Corolla i think is the best of the 7. its a car i really enjoy to drive, is fun to drive and offers a lot of space in my opinion.
