  • If the clacks leak the boiler is not steam-tight, like a tyre with a leaky valve, but at eight times the pressure!

    I think crud in the boiler feed-water or lime-scale can prevent them seating.

    The old-fashioned remedy was for the fireman to belt them with a hammer, which stood a chance of dislodging whatever it was so they seated properly.

    I do not know what Joe Public would make of the fireman doing that, hitting the locomotive with a hammer!
