  • Thank you very much for this educational video. I'm a writer and needed to see these tools for one of my stories. You made it all so clear and concise, thanks!

  • I just learned about these things today and was so happy to find out they're so affordable and easy to get & use. The very first site i read about modifying cars said it would cost between $20k-80k so i was beginning to think i'd never drive or get my Independence again...this is rly awesome I plan on purchasing the temp ones until i can buy myself a car of my own, then i'll get the perm ones :D Thanks for the video!

  • I drive with solid hand controls in both of my cars, and that first set looks so unsafe!!! I use Mobility Product Design controls. I also have the steering knobs, but I dont think Ive ever used them in my 7 years of driving.

I think the government should test these, because I would never put temporary controls on either of my cars, even if it was my only option. I'd rather wheel.

If those temporary controls fail, you are screwed. Im sure that company has a no-liability clause.

  • Watching this video I learned more about hand controls for driving, it's such a great idea. The bad thing is, like everything important for survival, the government put a crazy high price on things.

  • I'm a C7 SCI and Your arrogance is going to hold you back from gaining all the independence you had. If people offer help, wouldn't you rather them do that than mock you or make things harder for you? Put things into perspective and learn to be grateful bro. Hope all is well, thank you for the video

  • I never believed that a high-level Quad should be driving, ever...but I'm not opposed to a low-level Quad driving.

  • Would you belive a woman with M.S. asked about

fixing her car with handcontrols. They told her she

should get a power scooter and ride the bus

since she can't walk more then a few feet on a

walker. 2 years later she can't walk or stand

and was put in a nursing home just very

recently. Had she gotten the handcontrols

she would be still driving and walking with

the walker and living in her apartment.

  • I have worked in the Mobility industry for the last 3 years. Almost every vehicle manufacturer offers a mobility rebate to help offset the purchase of hand controls or other adaptive equipment. Also, if you are working or going to school, check with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. There are MANY other ways to pay for the structurally sound and most importantly SAFE hand controls than Medicare or Medicaid. Call your local mobility dealer and find out what options are available!

  • i got one for 20.00 pick n pull thsnks for the price

  • Make that $379+shipping!

  • Hey confession... he says in the beginning that he has a spinal cord injury, not CP. I bought my handcontrols used and had them installed, my state doesn't require official training.

Also, a para just went to prison for life plus 26yrs for using a "stick AKA squeege" to drive and ran over a firefighter/EMT and killed the firefighter. DON'T DO IT. I have I believe they're "handicaps" and I have permanent handcontrols secured to the steering column. I also have a seatbelt that holds my legs back

  • Once you've been disabled a few years, you learn the importance of political correctness. While it's aggravating to fight the "system" your anger is really showing through. We are all people first so rather than disabled people, we are individuals with a disability or people with a disability. Undoubtedly, you've helped many people, but a more even tempered demeanor might serve an even greater purpose. Glad you're out about like the majority of individuals with disabilities should be.

  • $1200, damn. I'm from Russia and I bought my first car (91 Lada 2107) from a disabled army veteran (I'm able-bodied). It had hand controls for the gas, brake and clutch. I asked him why he was selling it for so cheap, $500, and he said that the government gave him the car for free. I later took them out because they got in the way. Should have sold them over here instead of throwing them away lol.

Good car though, 5 speed RWD, you get the picture lol

  • great job on the video. ive been installing the mps hand control for about 15 years now. i've never had a customer disappointed with them. the installation is the neatest and easiest of all hand controls i have installed in my 23 years of business. mike and dean at mps are very friendly and i have the utmost confidence in them. mike at delmarva custom truck and van in delaware

  • Thanks! Very informative. Just crushed my right leg but need to get back to work!

These devices seem to be extremely over-priced. (Asisde from what is the value of mobility to a person). The manufacturers web sites really suck. I learned more about the design and use from your 8 min vid than I learned with 8 hours of searching the net.

    Thanks again!! Best to you!

  • Just In case anyone wants to know Herz provides hand controls in their vehicles. I've rented cars from them when I have traveled all over- Portland,Chicago, Missouri, and even 10yrs ago in Puerto Rico!!....... You got to specify left/right hand and give them a 24hrs notice, they can be a bit crabby about what types of vehicles the instal them in......

  • Most controls were Monarchs, But once in MO they seemed to be monarchs but were very strange Pull/go Push/stop things, pretty dangerous if you ask me. Much less control....... I think they should be universal standard push/stop rotate-down/go

  • wow very great video and with no covering from insurances god that makes me mad really. My brother in law was shot in his back and has been in the chair for about 20+yrs and hasnt drove once. I just told his brother about your vid and how i couldnt believe how cheap some of those cost(well not cheap but not as much as I thought) and there should be something the gov should do about all this. Its good for you to make informative vids for ppl like yourself so they can get ideas too.

  • I have CP and 21 not until now am learning how to drive and am very piss off of the system. I have to pay $182 for each class its not like they let you go until they believe you drive "safely" but seeing this video its more unsafe because of there stupid polices. Beside you get hand controls on your car unless you pass the DMV driving test which means more paying. Not every one has the money to pay and Medicare and Medicaid don't pay because they think its "unnecessary".

  • 182 for each class? Dang, how long were they? How bad is your CP? Because I have CP too, and I'm scared I can't drive? Were you scared when you first got into the car, etc, etc.

  • 182 per for 2 hrs, Mine I can walk but have really bad balance and can't walk for to long, I get around on my own slower and different but its not that bad compared to other people. I was nervous hitting something but now I love driving.. I still haven't got my license though but hope to soon. There are so many different ways to drive and they will do a evaluation the first day and tell you if you can or not or if you need a specific equipment.

  • $182/ 2 hrs of practice? That's really cheap! I always think my severity of CP isn't as bad as other people as well, but it does affect my entire body. Are you still practicing to drive with hand controls after the eval? How much was your eval alone? And I would imagine insurance would be expensive for us.I haven't gone through with the evaluation because of costs, and other things, but I hope it goes well.. I'm just worried about how much things will cost in the long run! Goooood luck!

  • Yeah its practice, I spend at least around 15 sessions and still need maybe 2 more. after I get the state approval I don't have to pay anymore but you have to buy the equipment which around 2 to 3 thousand dollars. Although Ford you can buy a car with the equipment used or new and the equipment includes the cars price. The evaluation for me was the same price as the class but they only spent 1hr which I only payed $81 that day. It all depends where you go.

  • Thanks for your responses, I hope we both drive one day! I really want to, but it's so expensive!!! 15 is a lot of sessions, btw! Do you live in CA? I didn't know they help us pay for it?

  • ALSO, as far as CP, do you have full strength in your left hand to operate the hand control on the left side, because CP affects my LEFT hand more so my right, and I hpe thts not an issue.

  • your strength you will need it more on the right then the left, so no its not an issue and it it is they may ajjust something for you

  • very insightful video, thanks for sharing.

  • A helpful tip: if/when you can, get yourself 2 wheelchairs & keep one in the car. That way you have an "everyday wear n tear" one & another one that stays "nicer"/cleaner longer AND (the best part, imo) that's 2 less wheelchair breakdowns (taking apart/putting together the chair) you have to do each time you go someplace. I have a garage, so no worries of the one I'm leaving behind getting stolen, rained on, etc. And when I get home, the other one is already set up & I just hop out & go.

  • Learing to drive in an adapted car was part of my rehab & something I had to pass before I was discharged. It really wasn't too hard to get used to, but I was learing in a foreign city, so that was a bit challenging.

  • As always, your vids are very informative and thought-provoking.

Just fyi, in case you weren't aware, all the major rental agencies (Hertz, Alamo, etc.) will fit cars w/ hand controls & a spinner knob if given at least 2-3 day's notice. It prevents you from having to lug the extra equipment around (& is much safer than that set up appears to be). It's a shame "they" (the red tapers) make it so hard (time-wise & financially) for people who are trying to help themselves become independent.

  • To hell with all those high dollar units. With a few basic hand tools and some materials from home depot for just a few dollars you can make your own that will be just as safe and reliable. Just go online and check out pictures of the units on the market to get ideas for your own design.

  • appreciate the vid I was just paralyzed 5 months ago today nice to know you can get independence back

  • yeah... don't pay for the driving lessons which are hella taxed... just get a set of hand controls and drive, then take your test--fairly simple and easy. The first day I got mine installed I drove through Seattle to Tacoma in the city and on the freeway... backing up was tricky because the rods in my back didn't allow me to twist, but everyone has their different gimpified way of dealing... good luck, what level are you?

  • I wrecked my bike drunk leaving a concert and cracked T8 crushed T6 and T7 cracked T5,but did not tear my cord... the hospital took x-rays and said I could go home! but I had to "stand and pee", when I did I ripped my cord 76% and fell out, thats a hard one to swallow....lol

  • ♥ yes

  • This is a real deep insight into a world I didn't know about. I had always wondered how people who couldn't use legs managed to drive cars.

As usual the profiteers have no fukin shame and will fleece anyone no matter how in need they are--to be mobile and SAFE in a car

  • i think there should be a law against charging so much for stuff like that
