  • I hear you. I consider this song a classic along with all the songs on the Best of Donald Byrd. I feel so bad for today's generation. Hey, I like some of their songs but compared to old school music like this, they are missing so much when it comes to real spiritual and uplifting music minus the over the top constant references to sex and someone done me wrong theme :-(

  • Fantastic .... Since the 70´s makind has evolved but strangely music has fallen apart to the point of sewage. If only people listened this once in their life time to realize how bad it is the stuff they listen these days.

  • I have the original wax and the CD..the best

  • @bevylou1 Man I would Buy That Wax from you.

  • @ThaKingofCo ...not for sale for now...thanks...for the interest...

  • @ThaKingofCo

I remember paying 15 pounds for this lp ,2nd hand in 89. 15 pounds was alot back then for 2nd hand vinyl but i didn't care because i just had to have it. Bought another copy in mint condition a few years later just for posterity. One of my favourite lp's.

  • @bevylou1 ME TOO BEVY, ME TOO!

  • Such a wonderful piece.

  • glad to see someone is here to listen!

  • For all of you who feel that I don't understand sampling, unfortunantely I do..but for you youngin' who think sampling is the way to go, thank God Stevie, Chaka, Chick Corea, Santana, EWF, AWB, Delfonics, The Moments, need i go on..gave us what we still call original works of .. Yo, check this out..if you can't afford the oil painting...stop buying the poster...I guess you like boot-leg movies too..Youth is TRULY WASTED ON THE YOUNG...SEE YA"

  • A good composer does not imitate; he steals.----Igor Stravinsky

  • YOU TELL 'EM, DAGO!!!

  • I see sampling as an introduction to older artists, an introduction to your own roots. I don't feel like sampling is such a bad thing, i see it as paying dues to the ancestors. Most artists who sample had they're own flavor to the track and thats magic, just check out A Tribe Called Quest for an exemple, they sampled alot of jazz/fuzion jazz/funk but where a very unique group in hip-hop history. You'll excuse me, I see hope in the Youth.

  • but through sampling, people are brought to the originals...for example...DJ Premier sampled Monk Higgins "A Good Man is Gone" for a song called "Next Time"..before "Next Time" i had never heard a Monk Higgins song...but because i liked what DJ Premier did with the sample..i searched for the original..and appreciate the original even more..same holds true for alot of people...how else do you expect the originals to survive if the generations after never hear them..thats just my opinion tho

  • I can sympathize in a way. Being lucky enough to have grown up in the gold age of hip hop (late 80's till 99), I began to spot samples as I got older and my music taste grew, and as I begun to listen to more Jazz and Funk.

As for this song, good lord, if only someone could create something as dense, layered and beautiful as this. And this is easy listening compared to something along the lines of Mingus totally smacked out.

  • @whatzaname4 I understand your argument. But you must understand the old-school crowd's utter shock and disbelief at the current state of music. We never thought it would sink to this level. Sampling is an abomination, a lazy way of making 'music' and much of it lacks that "something". There is magic and synergy when skilled musicians combine talents into a song. No matter how tuneful, something is lost in the process of digital cut-and-paste. So be it, everything changes.

  • As many times as I heard this song and this album - I had forgotten this tune! Many thanks for the memories!

  • Listen to Harvey Mason slicing and dicing and allocating the beat. Damn that's some fine skins!

  • This is one of my all time favorite songs and it comes from one of my favorite albums. The springtime of my HS graduation was filled with this album as a soundtrack. Til this day it still fills my heart with much joy.

    Thanks for posting this song!

  • Astonishing Music!!!

Donald Byrd, one of the last greatest musicians of

    70's blue note records !!!

  • wow, it's been decades since i heard this!!

  • This album is awesome. I should go to my local music store and buy it. Oh wait, they only carry manufactured groups and top40 fluff...nevermind

  • u can always order the album online

  • Classic tune.

  • I've never heard this song before but I like it. Thanks for downloading it.

  • beautiful.

  • that s interesting ! listen to bb & q band _Starlette issued 1981 and you ll notice it s the theme!

    Needs investigations :)

  • Check out 'Lightheaded - Never Square'

it samples this and its great!

  • So called musicians need to stop sampling and write their own music. That's what wrong with the younger generation...so glad I'm an Old G

  • @ Dagovan I feel like your closed minded and negative attitude, and others like it, is what holds back creative expression. Is it a problem that lightheaded recognized musical genius and borrowed it to supplement their own?

Haters need to stop trying to hold people back and in your case people need to stop putting us (the "younger gen") for free of what we can accomplish.

    Have a nice day

  • i think you will find that people have been remaking music since music begun.... its just we got computers to do it now...so glad your an O G ? my gess is that your so old you dont get sampling... thats why you hate it...typical old genarations tend to hate what they dont understand

  • amazing!!!!!

  • Trumpet Jazzy thing!!

  • Class, sophistication, depth, feeling, timeless sound. I think you all will agree that r&b was at one time some the best music ever created. Now.......*shrugging shoulders* Great post!

  • You call this RnB? That's interesting. Soul seems to have been replaced by the term RnB but I didn't realise that Jazz/Funk or Jazz Fusion as they call it in the States had gone the same way. Somebody please explain to me the attraction of the term RnB. To me RnB is black popular music from around the 1950s. It makes no sense to me to give everything the same label, the music is SO different. Maybe I'm old fashioned.

  • i like that horn

  • One word can be described . DOPE . I have heard this song so many times and Istill cant stop tappinng my foot . Calm, relaxing , peaceful.. I love it , DOPE !

  • best Jazz Funk Ever one million better

  • The greatest guitarist since Hendrix, Edmund Darris, is going to release a remake of this cut and Lansana's Priestess on his new CD...Google Peter Hay at Twin Vision Entertainment for details...he's in the studio now in St. Louis cutting the tracks!

  • Im going to have to hear that Lanasana's Priestess. I've never heard any covers of any of Donald Byrd's songs... which I do think is a good think because they are so classic I don't feel like just any1 has the right to do them... but I would like to hear some other solid musicians takes onsuch wonderful music!

  • This is going to be a great album. This guy is doing the best forgotten music from the 70's and 60's. He's also remaking Windy by Wes Montgomery. You can google Edmund Darris and read about his films also. We go and see him every week in St. Louis heplays everything from Ernie Isley to George Benso. He also gives 70's parties and plays jazz and funk all nite! I'll make sure you get the CD...keep in contact.

  • This is big.

  • heart warming......

  • Classic, love the way donald plays, his music really talks to you. Way ahead of his time, I rate herbie hancock on the same page . Two artist who's music never goes out of style. Sounds so beautiful, thank god for artists like this. Todays music, not all but most is garbage.

  • my pops used to listen to this every saturday morning on a sunny day. brings back memories.

  • drums beat me

  • Gorgeous!

  • damoolah omar!!!

  • ..gee, ...great post, have had this on vinyl since back then(..early 70's).still makes me tingle!!..praise the lord i had good taste in tunes!..(..oh,and the Gold Mine on Canvey)!!

  • The Goldmine, those were the days.

  • one of the greatest albums of all time!!!!

  • @djpause Could well be, who's to know? time has got a long way to go yet

  • A real back in the day treat, perfect rythym, sweet harmony... Thank you brother!!

  • so fun!

  • BIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The best..........This tune makes me tingle

  • Makes me want to dance, makes me want romance, puts me in a trance. Especially the first 2.....when I meet that special person, this beautiful Byrd has a good chance to become "our song".

  • Now this my jam!!!! So funky

  • My all time favorite musician!(along with Hancock!)

  • sho nuff! Byrd & Hancock AIN'T NO JOKE!!!!

  • Who is the female vocalist on this track? I love this track but I haven't heard the album yet ... I've got to buy it soon!

  • Kay Haith is the vocalist - she was one of his regular performers - check her out on "Think Twice."

  • Thanks kels :)

  • Beyond a doubt, this was Byrd's master piece.

Also, every song on this album is a classic. Subsequent albums were good but like Stevie's Wonder "Songs in the Key of Life" or Michael's Thriller, once you reach perfection, everything afterwards is considered "okay" (though personally, I liked Michael's Bad And Dangerous albums better:-)

Thx for bringing back a lot of great memories from my youth.

  • One of my Favourities......

  • Try listen to bobbi humphrey fancy dancer

    You will like it.

  • excellent

  • donald byrd said in an old interview: "i had the plainest name a name could be... i said to myself, 'i gotta do something big with this name' ". (and he did)!

  • No other has been able to master this sound. Simply put AWESOME!!!!

  • very very very good.

    eduardo SãoPaulo/Brasil

  • CLASSIC!

  • Dr. Byrd killed it! Spaces & Places is a deep album!!!!

  • Fonz and Larry strikes again!!!! They produced some of the best jazz/funk cuts ever made!

  • Hey, since you got this album, "Places and Spaces" Get that Wind Parade and Places and Spaces. I love Wind Parade!

  • Isn't Wind Parade a Ripperton/Stephney track?

  • My bad - thinking of Memory Band. Lol

  • best DB album. Loving this one!

  • Doesn't this music just get to you! You've had a "BAD" day at work, your driving home, never heard this song before and you think "FUCK IT" turn up your music in your car and anything seems much better! I DO! ;o)

  • beatiful i love it.....top fantasy jazz

  • Man folk sleep.

  • Creator bless you damoolah. I loove this track. Thanks for posting

  • I have a question. What kind of jazz would you call this?

ps. post more donald byrd please ^_^.

  • I CANNOT REMEMBER WHAT THE 'NEW MASTERS' CALL IT BUT IT DEFINITELY HAS A CATAGORY! (MAYBE ONE OF YOUTUBE'S MUSIC GURU'S CAN KNOWS). IT ALL BEGAN WITH ARTIST LIKE THESSALONIUS MONK, J. COLTRANE AND WES MONTGOMERY--THEY DID STUFF THAT DIDN'T "FIT" INTO THE MUSIC WORLD OF THAT TIME... THEY DEVELOPED THEIR OWN LINE OF JAZZ MUSIC...

(i did a book report on that inthe 9th grade).

  • @Cheesin331 ...This is actually FUSION, a mix of JAZZ and FUNK with a Rock beat holding up the tune. The Jazz part is the horn and the heavy syncopated rhythm that keeps it moving in an almost un-predictable fashion. Just ain't building tunes like this today, but then again a person like a Donald Byrd was a classically trained Jazz Musician and was one of the PROGENITORS of FUSION , so this brother had mad skillz and played with a full orchestra and conducted himself.

  • top album , dominos is my fav track on it

  • Oh, wow, Dominos is my favorite track on this album, too. I searched for "Dominos" for years and couldn't remember the musician. I had the vinyl record in 1975 and it was stolen and a few bars of the "Dominos" tune would come to mind now and then, and I longed to hear it again. So glad I found it at last!
