It's to do with the wavelengths of the light. Coming in the red arrows are high energy, shortwave length rays. When they reflect off the ground they change into lower energy, longer wavelength rays which can't get back out.

now wat i dont understand is how those rays got in in the fist place. usually when something cant get out, it cant get in either.
