I was fed the lie about babies manipulating their parents, but really, how can a baby have the reasoning skills required to make that deliberate choice to manipulate anyone? Wanting to "teach your child a lesson" comes from that ugly self-centered place in the parent who is 1) legitimately too stressed out/tired, 2) has believed the lie that this is what you are supposed to do, or 3) is choosing not to be nurturing and needs an excuse to justify their behavior.
